At least in tone, I'd say it's shaping up to look a lot like Transmetropolitan. A completely atomized culture with so little interest in its own past that the current year is no longer even known. And this maelstrom of techno-chaos is nevertheless ruled by men that are like facsimiles of presidents from a different age, the grotesquely Nixonesque Beast and the psychopathic Kennedyesque Obamaesque? Smiler. There's no Smiler this year, but maybe two Beasts instead. Either way, both Biden and Trump's popularity comes from a yearning for an imagined past that was less complicated, which is how I imagine both of Transmet's oddly traditional presidents came to be as well. There's new diseases, a permanent underclass which will never liberate itself, and catastrophic superstorms that happen for some reason, presumably climate change, but no one even cares to find out, they're just a fact of life now. Basically a dark age where everything is in a state of constant change, except anything that actually matters which will always stay the same.

children of men, although the idea the government would be organized or generous enough to send folks home suicide kits is likely overly optimistic

all joking aside, it's The Machine Stops. which for something written in 1909 is especially impressive.

quote:The story describes a world in which most of the human population has lost the ability to live on the surface of the Earth. Each individual now lives in isolation below ground in a standard room, with all bodily and spiritual needs met by the omnipotent, global Machine. Travel is permitted, but is unpopular and rarely necessary. Communication is made via a kind of instant messaging/video conferencing machine with which people conduct their only activity: the sharing of ideas and what passes for knowledge. etc. it's eerie.

If we can achieve the singularity and it goes right? The Culture. Full gay space socialism with trans-on-demand, drug glands in your brain, and our AI overlords see us as an amusing mix of pets, pests, and parasites they're too advanced to bother genociding and any work you do is both wholly elective and not all that dangerous unless you deliberately eschew protection. More realistically-- loving hell Pick is right and it's probably Demolition Man. Soft, smooth-brained fascism under the nominal guise of progressive language.
