i mean, if nothing else, how many old school webcomics are even still updating? It's just going to stop updating one day and no one will say anything in the blogs until like two years later.

Freefall has been continuously updating since 1998. There are currently 3428 strips.

I don't think it'll ever meltdown, it's too wholesome and boring.

It is currently on an arc where the protagonists are on an interplanetary flight and the author is explaining all the hard science stuff, including communication delays because of the huge distance, and the problems with weeks of isolation.

I find it fascinating. Utterly boring almost all the time. But consistently…

I'd argue that PA has had multiple small-scale meltdowns and the only reason they've succeeded is because they're basically Couchgamers Elon Musk, two stupid faces over a team of underappreciated hardworking dorks who believe with all their stupid hearts in the pointless endeavors they're wasting their lives on.
Like, the "dickwolves" thing absolutely has not been resolved, they have not learned their lesson, and they're 100% going to keep playing it up to their reprehensible fanbase because they know where the money is.

like, their forums were, even by gabe and tycho's own admission, a toxic shitstorm apocalypse during a time when that wasn't the only way of being. the comic is a perfunctory excuse for introducing new t-shirts to their store.

My point being, the webcomics that have survived this long have done so because they're made by Internet Stable people. they'll run till the wheels fall off the merch store. if they were going to explode, they would have done so already.

He went on to write Squirrel Girl for Marvel Comics for 5 years, it just recently ended. Not sure what his current projects are, comics stopped shipping in early April and Marvel won't be starting up until the end of the month and only releasing a handful of issues a week for a couple months at least.

My favorite thing about the Penny Arcade guys just never learning their lesson or anything is that like, they've inadvertently produced good things as far as I'm aware. Or at least semi-good things. Child's Play and PAX came about directly as a result of their actions or success and they ultimately had to basically drop their names from both things because being associated with the two of them and their comic wound up harming them more than it did good. Though someone who knows more could probably provide a more detailed write up.

I read Sluggly Freelance in the early 2000's and, as I've said before, I'm amazed it's still around.

It was and is probably terrible but I will say one thing, I remember it at least having arcs (that get resolved) and things actually happening at a reasonable pace, which is more than you can say of many webcomics.

Just the one, and that was wiped out? It actually really did end up only doing time travel exactly once.

Does anyone remember when they used to have webcomic awards, and they’d have a category for “best new female character”, and it always went to a woman with a hugely overdramatic backstory and destiny, and in retrospect always marked the downfall of the comic?

That sucked.

No, but for some reason this feels familiar. It does feel like the prelude to the more recent trend in video games of putting female characters through pornographic levels of suffering as a substitute for a personality.

Yeah I don't know if that was the reason but he does have mental health issues. I think he's on medication now. But again none of the work seems harmful, and he isn't a nazi/ fascist. I can live with weirdness or sad brains, I can't live with fasc.

Jeph is a sensitive type who can't take much criticism. I think artists like him are perfect for platforms that separate the artist from their audience as much as possible, since he just breaks down easily

Early It Hurts!! is definitely elevated by the writing over the art.

I have to hand it to Sluggy Freelance. It was the webcomic equivalent of the strange and passionate but relatively wholesome nerd who listened to Weird Al well into his 30s, which is a far sight better than the ones who turned into chuds or disappeared up their own rear end.

Granted I haven't read it in a decade and a half, but if the creator had a wild meltdown I never heard about it.
