I own this one already and I can recommend it. It’s a fun movie and I partly think James Hong made it because he wanted to be in scenes with beautiful women.

EDIT:

I’ll also recommend In the Cold of the Night. That movie is dumb in the best ways possible.

If you don't already have Tammy and the T-Rex and you're not going to buy it you're making a huge mistake. The only one of the rest of these which I have seen is Death Row Gameshow and that movie is a total pile of poo poo. It promises big and gives you very little. The titular gameshow is barely seen and the main story is some bullshit where the main guy is protecting some lady from a bad guy who's out to get here for reasons I can't even remember. It's a really lovely generic premise and the movie even fails at that. Anyway buy Tammy and the T-Rex.

Speaking of Vinegar Syndrome, I need to keep talking myself out of getting all the VSA titles. Two are already sold out and I’m not spending $100+ on the Vice Academy trilogy. I already went through this with the 5 films 5 years sets, I ain’t doing it again.

I personally haven't watched it but from watching the trailer, yes it's a movie worth picking up. The transfers are pretty good even scaled down to SD then upres'd to HD.

I mentioned it in the Cats thread, but I booted up the Australian version of the blu the other day and the directors commentary isn't anywhere on the menu. It can only be accessed by changing the audio track.

That's weird, right? It's still an advertised feature on the box (although listed at the very end after all the featurettes), it's just the toughest journey I've ever had to enable a commentary.

I also have the Australian Blu-ray and it looks like the commentary IS on the menu, but it's right at the bottom of the special features list, so you have to scroll through several pages before you see it. Possibly quicker to just change the audio track.

I continue to be perplexed as to why large movie studios have such awful menu designs on their discs when little boutique companies can manage decent looking ones

I was recently going through the Mad Max movies, I have the original three in a collector's tin from WB and Fury Road on its own, and I think they all have the same stock, cheap-looking menu (and the originals are really short on special features, notably Road Warrior which you'd think would have some cool extras.)

If I remember correctly, the High Octane box set is the Mad Max collection to jump on if you're looking for extras, including a two-and-a-half-hour making-of on the first film.

Also: I'm actually in the midst of going through George Miller's filmography (I just finished up Babe: Pig in the City) and, oh man, no matter what the subject of his movies are, George Miller shoots every one of them like a Mad Max movie and it's awesome. Even the tortuously sad Lorenzo's Oil has about as many dutch angles as an Evil Dead film.

It's probably between pressings, likely delayed due to the obvious. Criterion's website lists it as just "currently unavailable" which usually means it's just waiting for a reprint.

These are also showing up as unavailable, but not OOP:

The Essential Jacques Demy (originally dual-format, likely getting re-issued as Blu-only like the UK edition)
The Qatsi Trilogy
King of the Hill (dual format, likely getting a Blu-only reissue)
Salo (digipak)
Crumb
House
To Be or Not to Be
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (digipak)
A Hard Day's Night (dual format, likely getting a Blu-only reissue as seen in the "Rock Box" Costco set)
Eraserhead (digipak)
Mulholland Dr. (digipak)
Dr. Strangelove (digipak, also Sony's upcoming UHD has all the supplements on the Criterion edition plus their own from before)
The New World

None of these are likely to go out of print over rights.

I think I've said exactly the same thing in here before, but the Zatoichi set is shockingly good. With that many movies I kept expecting them to get lovely at some point but they're all varying levels of pretty drat good. The only one I haven't watched is Darkness is His Ally because it's not in the set for some reason.

Zatoichi '89 is a pretty good update with some great action, so I'd definitely seek it out. It's got a great, cheesy 80s ballad theme song too.

Media Blasters still owns the rights and released a blu ray a couple of years ago.

Then there's the 100 episode tv series in between, which I haven't bothered with yet, but apparently it's very much like the movies and worth a look.

Yeah, that movie is pretty much forgotten now, isn't it? It's weird to think that at one point, it was one of the big three non-shonen/shojo anime properties in the 80s/90s, alongside Akira and Ghost in the Shell.

It's aged quite poorly, especially compared to the other two, it really does expose how unambitious it really was. Akira and GITS delved into ideas about life and humanity and so on. What did Ninja Scroll really have beyond gore, tits and rape?

Hell, for it to cater to a young teenage boy in the 90's who had never seen a cartoon do anything like that, what else did it need? I think it, GitS, and Sailor Moon were the only anime tapes in small town music stores back then, and watching it was like that same "holy poo poo" forbidden rush that you get from discovering gory horror movies or porn for the first time.
