I hope that’s a sign that hosed up CAF procurement is improving and not putting guys in needless danger. Does anyone know if there will be a repatriation ceremony or if we can show support on the Highway of Heroes? I’d like to pay my respects when these guys come home. I feel so helpless about this situation.

Wing Commander said yes, there will be, albeit not a usual ramp ceremony due to the lockdown. I should think lining the highway would be just fine. Keep in mind they haven't recovered the other five, who are probably still in the helicopter.

Through the grapevine Freddy's boat was the first one on scene. Just horrible. The boats crew better get some good support after this. Can't imagine what they're all going through.

Most everything in the news has been inaccurate - the report from the Greeks has kind of made it unclear. Yes, Freddy was first on scene. Smoke markers were going off at the point of impact. RCAF has shared pics from the flight deck ceremony today. The story wasn't passed on though - they piped flying stations, and tried to establish comms with the aircraft. When there was no answer, they secured flying stations and went below for drinks. They're coming alongside ASAP to meet DFS and all the support, and the det is coming home.

I interviewed for medical school this year, was in the CAF and I know a girl who did MOTP. The catch is mostly that it's pretty competitive, you're paid army wages and you owe the CAF years of your time after the fact. Also, while other med students are having their summers off, you're working for Mr. Trudeau. That said if you stay in for the long haul, someone did calculations that I saw a ways back and came to the conclusion that the pension makes it worth it, but in the interim you won't be making the kind of money civvie doctors make. And they have only so many types of specialist they're interested in, so perhaps not useful if you want to get into ob/gyn or what have you. I'd also add that there are other options for funding and not to feel compelled to go this route out of financial need necessarily. Oh, and also, yeah. Another catch is that you're in the CAF. It's not for everyone. In any case, you need an offer of admission before you can apply of course, but if you head down to your local recruiting office they can give you some more materials. The best way to milk those plans is by already being in IMO. Knew some people halfway through their contract that got accepted. 4 to 7 yeas of getting a salary instead of going into debt for school, and the next 5 years will take you to immediate $100,000/yr pension at which point you start up a private practice. Two of them were ROTP as well so by the time it's done, half their career will have be free school and training courses.

When I was civvy U UTP, we went to quarterly update gatherings with all the regional people in subsidized education including doctor trainees. One year they lost three right at the end of their residencies because some hospital snatched them up and paid off their obligations. And if there is one thing I have learned in 18 years in this organization, everyone has far better lawyers than we do, so it was pretty seamless for the docs. The system may be even more ripe for taking advantage of than most know. There's probably some sort of restricted release scheme a la pilots now, but see my point about lawyers above.

My buddy just released today after nearly a decade of the forces continuously refusing to post him so he could live with his wife where her education wouldn't go to waste. Dude's been in for 15+ years and gave them more than enough chances to make his family whole. loving sucks to lose a solid tech and, personally, the first friend I made when I posted in. Guy was my mentor and had my back when I was in a bad headspace last summer. That's a tragic failure of institutional leadership, imo. They lost a qualified soldier with years of corporate knowledge and get nothing in return, all because they wouldn't give him a no-cost move. What a lovely time to leave, too.

It took my father nearly 23 years to get posted to where all our family ties are. Then after 3 years they posted him back to loving Winnipeg so he went alone on I.R. Thankfully his next posting was back to where all our family is, and he retired there a few years later. Not as bad of a story as your buddy, but definitely another object lesson in the "tough poo poo" mentality.

Hey thread, my industry is currently imploding and I'm once again thinking about joining the navy. Past the lack of funding, bad leadership, and postponed recruitment appointments, is there any reason why it'd be a bad time to do that now? I don't have a family.
