[ASK] me about OS/2 Warp
truss rods are scary at first cause you get this KRAK as the rod suddenly lets go, but as long as you never go more than 1/4 turn at a time its fine

i had to do the truss rod, intonation and action height on my 5string bass and boy howdy if you think a guitar neck has some tension jeeeezus bass necks are 3x harder. it was actually reverse bowed when i got it

--why am i even posting this idk!

to adjust truss rods you need 3 hands or a capo - one finger on the first fret, another on the last, and a third to measure the distance between string and fret at the 12th. you want between 1-2 business cards of room generally

if theres not enough clearanceyou loosen 1/4 turn, if theres too much you tighten 1/4

the adjustment is generally best done if you detune all the strings first so the neck doesnt have a fuckin hundred and twenty pounds of tension on it and THAT is when you start thinking about one of those string winders that clamps into an electric screwdriver

even worse on basses where theres a fuckin 18:1 gear ratio on the tuners or something stupid

hmm gently caress

now that the tension is letting the bridge sit flat, I tried that 1st and last (24 frets baby) trick and the space between the string and 12th looked very similar to a card or two, certainly not a wide gap or nothing. hopefully this means I don’t have to change it.

this guitar is a “soloist”, and it does feel “small” and I think it may be the smallest guitar I’ve played. like the size difference is subtle and I probably wouldn’t otherwise have noticed until I started thinking about the purpose of a shred guitar vs a rhythm guitar but because I am a bit unco imma have to get my practice in otherwise I’m gonna cut out ringing strings with my fretted fingers by accident coz the strings are so close all the time.

but it feels good man. really hope spending a chunk of time (whatever that is) often to playing or practicing becomes part of my day. I know it’ll be rewarding.

and I’m now super gutted I got the komplete Audio 1 and not 2 because I can’t plug my synth and axe into ableton at the same time. I want to practice loving around with both and getting some arpegiated chords backing some noodling or whatever a bass station II and an electric guitar can let me do together

Ohh this is a neat tip. The Dave's guitar guy has specific feeler gauges and a ruler which I thought maybe I'll get some day, or just find a local professional guitar tech. But this is useful for in the interim

Echi it sounds like you may need another trem spring in the back, which make sense if you also went to heavier strings

[ASK] me about OS/2 Warp
yeah dude neck tension skyrockets with like the third power or something stupid as string gauge goes up. i run ernie ball super slinkys (0.009's) on my 'player guitars' and 0.011's that go up to railroad track gauges on my lovely old 60s strummer, and the tensions like a 2x diff.

ok I did wonder about that, but what practical difference would it give if the bridge is in the correct position right now?

I suppose the action of the tremolo may be affected but outside of that .. ?

I wondered if it would be needed for when tension of the strings mean you cannot set the bridge just by tightening the screws alone, but I have managed that.

well.. if I tune down a step ;/ perhaps you’re right. I’m happy to tune down a step tho I can order a spring from somewhere

Post a pic of the bridge from the front and the spring chamber

If I had to guess, I would say you probably have your spring screws cranked all the way down into the wood or something. Did you only have two springs back there?

Jonny 290
May 5, 2005

[ASK] me about OS/2 Warp
Yeah loving with the number and position of springs to get a floyd to work right with different string gauges is a time honored ~pain in the rear end~ i mean obsession

like you have five spring hooks (or should) and you can run 2, 3, 4 or 5 springs

and if you run 2 or 3 springs you can further play with which hook you connect them to, to raise tension a bit

pre:
o o o o o
| | |
o o o o o
vs this which will give a bit more tension without going to 4 springs

that particular string arrangement was when the springs fell out and they were the first way I managed them back in to get it working and didn’t think about changing yesterday

they can get tightened about another half inch toward the wood

I'm doing the justinguitar app and it's great. I wanna say I paid $60 for a year, and of course all the material is free if you don't give a poo poo about having a phone app. the app has exercises and stuff in it (and blocks going to the next step behind actually doing them) so it's great for me, though. I'll have to check out the fender one once I finish it!

I spent like an hour playing on the patio while little Jones alternately danced, sang, ate his lunch, and squirted water toys. it was the best hour I've had in a really long time

lol yesterday when I finished tuning it I thought it was, when I went to take the pic this morning I saw it slightly down and thought “gently caress the guys will think I’m a chump”. I’m gonna claim that the new strings settled overnight 🧐

I did it like 4 weeks ago, during lockdown, and it's great!! I got the alesis Nitro mesh kit for like $370 + tax and a book called "a funky primer" - deffo recommend. For the price the set is fantastic and will probably give me enough play for years. It's got midi out and crap too and the hi hat and kick drum feels good

I think I'm going to get a swing pattern book next

the guitar stand for little jones's guitar came in today! he has $80 saved in his "bank", so I'm gonna let him spend that on his guitar if he wants to and tell him i'll kick in the other half. he'll probably get it this weekend and i am _so excited_ to play with him.

he'd been having some fun with my fullsize righty guitar, but it was way too big of course. the way you hold a guitar has always seemed backwards to me (why would I want my lovely hand to do the hard work of fretting if i'm not fingerpicking?), but when I had him flip over my guitar and hold it lefty he lit up instantly. so of course he needed one of his own. we'd originally planned on letting him save up for it and play mine until then, but the left/right thing made me think he should get it sooner rather than later.

my midi controller looks to finally be back in stock at sweetwater, so hopfully i'll get that before this weekend. i have a string cutter coming in the same order and would really like to restring my acoustic this weekend, too

nerds may be interested to know that the 'bells' sequence was essentially random notes in a scale slowly fed into a delay set to 13/8 (or maybe 13/4). the weird delay time lets each new note kindof slip into the sequence that makes it feel like it's evolving organically.

also yeah rip florian :(

i set up a generative pure data patch to do something similar, except these things seem to work wya better with modular or just analog gear.. there's something in the water

alternatively i should just try to set something up in live and turn off the screen for a while

anyway thanks for the inspiration :)

i got a yamaha dtx 12m with pedals and i like it

my downstairs neighbor does not like it. banging the thing is still pretty drat loud especially if you use pedals.

also ymmv:
i have played the high end roland kits at stores and they are almost like the real thing, cheaper digital kits are like playing a cast iron skillet covered with some excuse for rubber padding and may actually damage your wrists if you play too much

i got the dtx 12m knowing it would never make me instantly happy and it would be yet another instrument to be conquered and made to sound nice

basically if you want a digital kit, go try out things in a store, see how you like it

i actually came here to post this video. i followed it along with a drum roll sample that i found on a weird website, but you can find your source material by getting some breaks collection or something somewhere.

so if you don't want to get into breakbeats or dnb, and you have never harbored any wish to be a dnb producer you can safely watch this video. otherwise prepare for a life of ruin

I was looking at the Alesis Nitro Mesh or Roland TD-1k (cause it looks more compact to store) but maybe the mesh pads are worth it...

No prob, happy to share

I was a drummer in high school concert and marching band, and then went guitar, but my point is that I have some experience with knowing what real kits feel like and stuff and the Nitro mesh specifically surprisingly good feeling. I also did some researching before hand and it regularly shows up at the top of the list, being compared to much more expensive Roland kits and stuff. The stick bounce feels pretty natural and stuff, it also lets you get your muscle memory built up and just feels good cuz it feels like a real set as opposed to a pad, which I also looked at.

Using my feet and crossing my arms and swinging around was essential to me.

But, if you have the money and stuff, maybe go for the Roland or Yamaha $700+ range or $1200 if it's a thing you are sure about

if you dont mind drilling, drill a new clean hole that matches a short piece of dowel, glue, trim and re-drill for the screw.

if you just wanna fix it, yeah, glue and matchstick/toothpick bits. dont use pva. you want wood glue here

the traktor setup would give me guitar rig and two thousand dollars worth of amps and pedals on my macbook pro so i could make very strange noises

and renoise would let me quickly write rhythm tracks but it really has zero 'record me playing guitar along to these drurms' ability. also its only 75 bucks
