Motorhomes always seem like a worse idea - when you get to your destination with a truck/trailer, you can unhook the truck and use it like a normal vehicle.
When you are in a motorhome, you need to pull a small car or something as you can't drive a huge thing easily around town.

Also engines etc wear out in a motorhome, but you can always buy a new truck (though from all the posts it seems that everything else leaks/breaks etc after a few years instead).

This is from my grandparents experience with a 1972 home done conversion van - so maybe modern/non-home made motorhomes are better. Though the neighbours motorhome seems to spend more time at the repair shop on warranty (a 3 ish year old large box motorhome) than it does in their driveway. They use it for 4 months a year, and basically leaks every time.

I thought the motorhome was supposed to sit while the kids refused to ride in it, then sit until it was sold cheap so someone could put the 440 into an old muscle car that would eventually run?

Looking at the way motorhomes and trailers are put together makes me physically uncomfortable. I've built shipping crates more structural than most of those things and people spend 5, even 6 figures on them? loving HARD pass, sorry.

Now, buying them after other people have soaked up all the depreciation, topgear/reaver roundy round racing them, then ripping the motor out and putting it in something more deserving? Sure.

Wife's been talking about the Sprinter and similar RV conversions...some of them do look nice but man that's a good chunk of money for something I really doubt we would use that often. I'm pushing for renting a few times a year instead, has to be better than maintaining and storing yet another vehicle.

Had a local shop do an initial corner balance and alignment on the Formula Ford this week so that's one step closer to being ready for when tracks open back up. I've been bombarded by track day and racing organizations in the past week or so about things opening back up and days available but I'm still leery about it. Dad's offered to drive their RV down and go with me, handling all the tech inspection and registration stuff to help me stay away from people. I'm 50/50 on whether it's worth it, Wife is against it.

The Transport Administration decided to take a closer look and opened an in-depth study on motorhomes safety. They selected two types of motorhomes, one semi-integrated and one fully integrated.
The first one retains the manufacturers’ driver cabin while the latter only uses the chassis. Both are built on the basis of a Fiat Ducato van, which is Europe’s most common motorhome platform (84%).
The Swedes decided to use the same frontal collision test used by Euro NCAP for passenger cars. It consists of a frontal crash into a concrete barrier and wall at a speed of 64 kph. It corresponds to a frontal crash with a car at 90 kph, which is, unfortunately, the most common scenario.
...
For the semi-integrated motorhome, the driver’s seat detached and was projected backwards towards a child seat. Plus, the cabin was completely crushed.
The fully integrated motorhome results are even worse. The shock dislocated the body from the chassis and the cabin was crushed until the second row of seats.

https://newmobility.news/2019/05/24/motorhomes-show-appallingly-poor-crash-test-results/

So apart from the fact that nothing inside behind the passengers seems to even consider safety (eg that bulkhead right behind the drivers head), I suspect there’s still a “commercial vehicle” loophole at play here. While commercial vans have gotten safer and do have airbags and other avoidance tech, they still don’t seem to have to meet the same standards as passenger cars and are still dangerous as gently caress, even before the motor home guys get to them.

I mean when they talk about the body ripping off the chassis - isn’t that what still happens with literally every body on frame vehicle, from Land Rovers to F250 to semi trucks, in a big enough impact?

Given that the second RV is literally half made from wood, I would imagine that it would take a significantly bigger impact to rip a F250's body off its chassis. I'm pretty sure even a Model T would be safer in crash at this point.

RV crash safety is pretty horribe. But as a compensation link: https://mubi.com - for once sponsored videos actually led to something good. 30 day trial of movies that are chosen by the site. Watching some random french film about a german officer living with a french family during the war and it's good. Well worth a sign up if you are bored and feeling like watching some movies that aren't super anglosaxian / american.

Also, I just walked past a 70's GTV 2000 which rekindled my need for a GTV6. :(

I'll just stay in a hotel.

Really, unless you're using an RV every other week or actually living in it what's the point. For the ridiculous prices of RVs these days you could stay in nice hotels at the destination you wanted to go to and rent a drat car if you need one.

If I feel the need to go camping I'll use a tent.

On the Elon front, did everyone else read the WSJ story yesterday that Elon is fantastically cash poor. To the point that he has 3 homes in the LA area on the market, plus he has $1 billion in stock options open, but he needs ~$600M cash to exercise them... and he doesn't have the scratch. What he does have is 20% Tesla stock which he needs for his controlling interest, but has that leveraged, too...

 i think it would all be down to what I hit. if I hit anything higher than a car infront of me at speed I am probably hosed! There is one layer of aluminium and a single horizontal steel between me and the world above the chassis.

Someone rolled one like mine in a 60 mph emergency motorway stop avoiding someone else and was badly concussed by flying interior debris but not otherwise injured and the body maintained most of its shape. Chassis was reusable!
I also went to look at another one that was hit head on by a drunk driver in a car doing 30-40mph or so. Car went underneath the chassis and broke the front axle off and pushed it right back. No serious injury to the forward control driver! Chassis was repairable!

It is a LOT worse than being isolated in your home. For starters, a significant number of people who have this virus will never show any symptoms of it, yet they can still spread it to others very easily, potentially spreading this poo poo all over the country. And if you happen to make a stop in a small town, you've probably just spread the virus to people who live somewhere likely without any effective healthcare means to deal with an outbreak. Additionally, if someone on this trip gets sick, that's putting an additional burden on someone else's healthcare system. Finally, I don't know how it is in that failed state you call the United States, but pretty much everywhere else in the world, if you travel somewhere from out of your region/state/province/whatever, you are required to self-isolate for 14 days, or 14 days after the last symptoms if you happen to be sick, so what even is the point of traveling anywhere right now, or any time in the near future?

But yes I will continue pearl-clutching. rear end in a top hat.
