That's the subtext I got from the Kylo betrayal at least. TheBigBudgetSequel posted:He still technically does. I imagine Rian is more inclined to make more Benoit Blanc films currently, but I imagine we'll get more Star Wars from Rian at some point and the anger it will cause will be hilarious to watch. I'm all for Rian pissing off every douchebag who threw a temper tantrum and caused us to get Rise of Skywalker instead of a decent final film.

Considering the number of forced cameos, call backs, unpopular characters removed (rip rose) and dialogue lines meant to appease fans "I gotta bad feeling about this!" RoS sure feels like it was designed from the ground up to appease fans upset by TLJ instead of telling any kind of coherent story or building up it's characters.

You could literally say this about VII: “Considering the number of forced cameos, call backs, unpopular characters removed and dialogue lines meant to appease fans "I gotta bad feeling about this!" TFA sure feels like it was designed from the ground up to appease fans upset by the prequels instead of telling any kind of coherent story or building up it's characters.” The sequels are uniformly awful. Any difference in quality from film to film is negligible if you squint. The suggestion that IX was going to be good until Disney cowardly decided to bow to internet nerd rage is literally just internet myth making. VII and VIII were garbage, why would IX be any different? The problem isn’t Disney spinelessly appeasing nerds upset about VIII, the problem is Disney spinelessly appeasing nerds upset about the prequels.

Jewmanji posted:Sorry but 7 and 8 were both awful. 9 isn’t the exception here Yea I'm not going to defend any of the sequels because I agree they're all bad (I'll stan a little for TLJ because I appreciate what it was trying to do) I just pick on RoS because it is the worst of the bunch. As I detailed in my previous post a page ago, TFA is the original sin of the series and set up the whole "saga" for failure by focusing too much on old characters and not developing the new ones, and reusing the same goddamn story beats (protagonist on desert planet, super death weapon, emperor figure, death of old wise guiding character, sneak into hostile super weapon base, ect) from the previous movies. It didn't have anything original to say about the universe or its characters. Like, imagine the character possibilities if, for example, Fin was a brain washed Storm Trooper who only turned good/fled because he suddenly became force-sensitive and began to freak the gently caress out. And the series is about him further discovering the force as it tries to guide him to the light side (the force chose you) while being very, very tempted to go to the dark side because of his Storm Trooper background? Instead FIN decides he suddenly is tired of shooting civilians (which ok I can buy) but then spends the whole series....idk? Following people around? First he follows Rey, then in TLJ gets a GF and does gently caress all, and in RoS gets another new GF but still does gently caress all except make a lame joke here and there? All of the new characters in this sequel series are wasted. And all of the old ones are wasted to, undoing all of the character development they had built in episodes 4,5,6 (Leia is a rebel leader again! Han is back to smuggling! Luke is..ok lukes just the new Yoda) and then they all get killed off. Great. Solaris 2.0 fucked around with this message at 15:58 on May 12, 2020 |

What I believe is that some marketing executives sat down and created a formula based on dumb superficial understanding of what made the original trilogy so great and then twisted it to satisfy average fan expectations, and that formula was forced into all three movies And no good director or writer could have made much better cause they had to follow that stupid unimaginative formula I might be wrong, but thats how I explain the feeling I got, in all 3 movies, of watching a bad reboot of the original trilogy mixed with bad star wars fanfic Elias_Maluco fucked around with this message at 16:02 on May 12, 2020 |

Hell, the first line of spoken dialog in the sequels is "This will begin to make things right." It's obvious metacommentary on the prequels. I'll say it again: the moment Giancarlo Esposito ignited the Dark Saber, Mando set itself up as the live action sequel to Rebels and Clone Wars.

Even new elements added are all visually similar to previous elements, all the locations and all the characters look like things from the OT. It's a very algorythm-brained approach to making movies that I think is getting worse and worse as time goes on. Also, the only thing that TLJ did that was interesting was the idea of these two fated characters deciding to tear the system that's dooming them to fight instead of accepting their fate. That was interesting until they veered away from it at the end. If you remove that single element then everything else in TLJ is really bad. Any truly interesting continuation from Episode VI would’ve had our heroes resurrect the Republic, only to find that they hadn’t really solved its problems, and now they’d gotten too old and jaded do anything different. But that would’ve been the dreaded politics.

It's been mentioned previously in the thread but something dealing with the actual fallout of taking apart the empire, all of the conflicts the Empire papered over that brought it about in the first place, say a resurgent seperatist movement, or remenant imperial warlords to strong to take down. So that it's an ongoing effort, old giving way to the new, instead of an absurd reset to the status quo.

Instead we had the all powerful "first order" pulled out of some unknown rear end in the first movie, so they could rewind to the same situation of IV Only they basically beat it on the second movie, so in the third they had to pull the emperor itself out of the death star rear end and he pulls a huge fleet out of his rear end, now with every ship a death star, so we are back at it again! Also he explains the first order was pulled out of his rear end too, along with Snoke, so conclusion! Everything was tied up from the beginning!

Yeah the obvious direction was to follow Episode III's lead. There are heroes on both sides. Just have the heroes of VI become bureaucratic villains upholding a new and unjust neoliberal regime. Put the audience in the same destabilizing place that the prequels did. Have Leia become like an Iyad Allawi figure. Or like, the technocrats of the Obama administration.

Solaris 2.0 posted:Both Rey and Fin are force sensitive but the series is about their struggles with controlling the force while relying on each other for support. Except Fin is the one who goes toward the light side while Rey gets pulled by the dark. This feels like the best course of action. You have all the pieces in place, just scramble around a bit: - Have Rey completely gently caress Kylo up at the end of TFA, not just scar him. While he's recovering in a coma he can have his heart to heart with Han's ghost, maybe some Leia reaches out to him too while she's in a coma. You can still do the Force connection stuff with Rey, and the end result is he wakes up as Ben Solo. - Rey finds Luke but rather than just deciding to have an extended vacation he's stuck on achh-to because of some sort of Force trap that he can't figure out. Have him train Rey but with the hints of dark side stuff that we saw from her in RoS. She heel turns and abandons Luke there, still meets up with Ben, kills snoke, only she stays on the ship and takes over the First Order. - Finn wakes up, starts having all sorts of Force accidents. He and Rose still go on their casino run but they encounter Ahsoka in addition to DJ. She gives him some tips on using the Force, balancing light and dark, being a Jedi doesn't mean you can't fail, etc. They still end up on the Snoke ship, he still has his fight with Phasma, etc. So it's Rey vs Luke's projection, with Luke showing that rather than running away after training a student goes bad, he's going to take action. Ben in the Falcon to rescue the rebellion, setting up some tension with Finn, Poe, Leia, etc. Going into Episode 9 you have Ben back in the light seeking redemption, Finn as the grey Jedi, and Rey on the dark side. The Palpatine stuff works there but I think Trevorrow's script is probably the better fit given the whole stolen Star Destroyer thing and Finn inciting rebellion among Storm Troopers. Whether Luke or Leia are alive, what roles they play, etc could go either way but overall it makes the new characters the center and gives them some conflict and stakes that aren't just retreads.

Rey taking Ben's hand could've been the most interesting thing to happen to Star Wars since Vader's parentage reveal. Disney would've never done anything to rock the boat on their crown jewel, though. Especially not that hard of a rocking. Instead, they decided to have a cookie cutter machine on a conveyor belt write their movies, delivering it safely to theaters for mass consumption. I liked a lot of TLJ and some parts here and there of TROS, but good god, I have no respect left for JJ Abrams anymore. Dude is awful.
