Nebalebadingdong posted:more adventurers I’m loving these but I also think you should stop at like 80% of the detail for the interior shapes. Silhouette is good but I’m losing the interior forms in the pattern density.

Really? Hmm.. I'm going off of Krzysztof Maziarz's character concepts, which have alot of that same density: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/P6Qw3 He must be using shadows, thinner detail lines and color to better control the shape than I am Hellbeard posted:Cool! Hellbeard posted:Cool! What if- flat colors /gray fills? if i could give you a lil critique too, it would be to push the contrast about 20%, and especially use darker darks! there are a few areas (around where her hair meets her forehead, her underarm, boob-shadow, the core shadow on her thighs etc), that would look better with a bit more on the shadow, because right now there's some kinda flat looking surfaces. the unicorn guy is a good example of showing those values, but he could also use just a little more punchiness on the contrast!!

Hellbeard posted:Anyway Only thing I noticed was that the proportions of the face and head seemed a little bit off. Her face seems like it's a bit high up and squished to the left and the back of her head seems a bit too far away. I fiddled with it a bit and came up with this: I just moved her face a bit down and to the right and widened it out a bit, then tucked the back of her head in a bit. And looking at it now, the glasses no longer line up, but you get the idea.

Haven't posted in a while, still been drawing every day. Decided to test the waters and make a comic page out of a smidge of the first paintball episode of Community. Hellbeard got me thinking about backgrounds with his post a few pages back replying to one of my character designs and I figured the cluttered study room backgrounds were good practice. Had a hard time getting Britta's expressions down.

Current thing on twitter is redesigning classic Filipino superhero Darna, so I made this and made sure to stress that superheroes should be political. If you wanna see a bunch of better artists doing their takes on Darna redesigns, be sure to check out the #SigawDarna hashtag.

Cool comics art ^^^ OK now I can do something else (or can I?) Here's the third revision I think the extra cycles really brought this drawing very far from where it was first "finished" even if there is still much room for improvement.

Until I looked at those renders on desktop I never realized how detailed they were. I don't think I know enough to critique it, but good job! Watching you work through the revisions has been really neat. Plarped down some stuff from my Pinterest feed. Slowly getting to the coloring style I want. Argue posted:

Hellbeard posted:Please critique! This is a general comment, but I recommend you block in colors on the whole painting before getting into as much detail as you did with the face and shirt. That way, you should be able to see more immediately if your basic color ideas will work for your composition. Plus, then you'll be able to zoom out to see major compositional problems (similar to flipping it horizontally) almost from the start, which should go a long way towards preventing you from reaching a situation where you realize you've gone too far in one direction and can't change something easily without significant effort..

My only tip is resist the urge to draw every single hair. Like stick to the level you got in that pic, I think it's good you used bigger strokes and didn't blend it to hell E in response to nag

^^ sweet, I like the colors and lighting. What program/brush do you use? Work has been "loving" me in the "rear end" these past two weeks, if you know what I mean. Here's a tired AM doodle. I gave him a pompadour, I thought that was amusing.

Clip Studio! Most of it is with a brush that closely mimics the basic simple round of Photoshop (hard edges, opacity via pen pressure, minor variation in size via pen pressure), though, so I can't see why you couldn't use that instead. I also used a square brush; Dave Greco had a particular one, I think it was free--"DG_Main" on Photoshop, and it's great. I ported it to Clip Studio, but I can't get it to behave the same without dual brush features. There's a few other brushes I used but they're generally of no consequence; it's 95% round opacity. It's funny, I'm a brush collecting hound, but often I keep finding that the default brush suits my painting the best. I mean, I use a pencil brush that I found somewhere, but it really doesn't matter since I end up painting over all the pencils anyway. Also, when I'm not happy with the finish of a painting, I just apply a cheap chromatic aberration to the image and bam, instant pop, such an amazing crutch.

Does the default brush have a name? I've been using "Dense Watercolor" or "Smooth Watercolor" a little. So far I haven't used any that feel like Photoshop.. v Thanks so much! Cory Parsnipson fucked around with this message at 06:31 on May 20, 2020 |

After some googling, I think I may actually have downloaded it rather than created it, my memory probably played tricks on me on account of it being a default PS brush. The "round opacity (photoshop)" brush in this pack has the same name as the one I use; I'm assuming it's the same one: https://www.deviantart.com/nesskain/art/Brushes-for-MS5-388943293 Incidentally, I also like this particular pair of Photoshop brushes that seems to be used a lot when I watch speedpaints of illustrators. I can't find the link anymore, but I remember that the brushes were free, and I get the sense that they were popularized (though not created) by Helen Chen. I've recreated the brushes to the best of my ability in CSP and am fairly satisfied with the flat one, but not so much with the bristly one (since a lot of its texture really comes from--again--the dual brush settings, which Clip Studio doesn't have). I've uploaded them here for the time being. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/m0jh4bfy79xo4pb/AABOG8_9l97LdxX-nbn5JpTXa?dl=0
