I've said it before, my last Scion (rip) saved my loving life. If I would have been in a 80's or even 90's econobox I would have been dead full stop. Guess I'm kind of lucky that my first (and hopefully only) major accident happened much later in my life when cars are this safe.

The upside to a firetruck like that is it will be impeccably maintained and have extremely low miles. The downside is they aren't as useful as a regular kei truck (as the bed has been modified to hold a pump and various hoses), will never have AC, and will have various modifications done on the inside to hold all the electronics for the lights, sirens and radios. Specifically those 1989 ones are 550cc, as 1990 is when they switched over the 660cc. It isn't the displacement that's much of a big deal but the fact that all keis were refreshed with newer designs because of the regulation change. My guess is those trucks were bought at auction in Japan for around 1200 bucks top, and around 2500~ more to get it here in the USA. They are common enough in Japan.

It's an old car with low mileage. That makes it collectible in the eyes of most sellers even if there are no other redeeming features of that model.

If it's in good shape mechanically, then yeah that seems about right with a lil room for negotiation. Maybe depending on the location a little. Around here it seems like any clean car with 33k miles could get 2k+ If they thought it was collectable it'd be way more than 3k

Probably an engine, transmission, and then more niche maybe a spare tire holder from a Gravel Express. I'm not set on JDM for the first two parts, and I'm not even sure if I would do an engine swap unless my engine decides it needs a new hole at some point, but I'm trying to get an idea of what my options are.

Then again if someone has what you are looking for already then it might be a lot more convenient to just eat the cost and have what you need.

Fair enough, thanks. I'd probably be looking at an EJ20 and/or a turbo transmission for a Subaru. That stuff is definitely available in the US, but there's the question of how many miles are on them. It might not be true but I'm of the impression that cars tend to accumulate miles more slowly in Japan between the entire country being about the size of California and them having good public transit that means people don't have to drive long distances all the time. The car is old enough that it's not CAN bus compliant so all the engines that would work well are at least 12 years old and will probably be another year or two by the time I actually do anything.

I'm in New Zealand (one of Japans dumping grounds) looking at getting an ex-Japan Levorg at the moment and it isn't uncommon to see 2014 or 2015 models with 160,000km + (about 100,000 miles)

But in both cases the 3dr. was much better looking. It looks like the market agreed. In Canada nobody bought the non-coupe Integras and they were withdrawn from sale after the 1996 model year.

There were a lot of four doors sold in Japan, even some in Type R trim. I've always preferred how they look compared to the hatch, but then my first car was a Japanese import DA8 which I still have fond memories of. That one posted above is a carburettor model too if I'm not mistaken, about 100hp E. Those type of models are in the minority and are truly disposable, when the JCI runs out they are discarded like trash, I once got a loving mint condition Camry from a junkyard for $200 among other lame models I would flip and sell on base. The better cars would get renewed and cars like that Integra would get left behind, so all the used cars for sale were mostly the more desirable models as all the lovely poverty spec models were weeded out. The selection of really good used cars was crazy, almost everything had a turbo or at the least twin cam 16 valve GT versions.

A roommate long ago had a geo storm in black with a yellow racing stripe, that thing was such a piece of poo poo but also somehow limped along forever. I think the tires might have been entirely filled with fix-a-flat.
