AvP Nerd/Fanboy/Shill

It was my birthday on the 11th and I just got a job offer yesterday, so let's celebrate with photos of random Aliens/Predator merchandise in my collection because I'm a corporate shill and media whore who spends adult money on children's things related to a media franchise!

Here's a pair of old Kenner figures (Gorilla and Mantis Alien), and a pair of Eaglemoss figurines based on the Kenner line. The Gorilla and Mantis Alien toys share the same torso (and arm gimmick) but their arms, legs, tail, and head are different. Likewise, the Bull and Rhino Aliens also share the same torso and gimmick.

These are the NECA remakes of the Kenner Gorilla Alien, Scorpion Alien, and Snake Alien, and the original Kenner Snake Alien. The Snake Alien was the first Alien toy I ever got back when I was 9, and I specifically got it because my mom was afraid of snakes. :kiddo:

This is an Alien in a specimen tank from Bradford Exchange. It's actually filled with water and it's pretty heavy, and it also lights up with lights inside the tank.

NECA Space Jockey miniature, I think it's pretty sweet. I think they did one that's actually in-scale with their figures but it was like several hundred dollars and made of foam (wtf).

Alien, on the Atari 2600.

A bunch of ships, including the scout ship from 'Predator', the Derelict from 'Alien', and my Narcissus collection.

Kenner Spiked Tail, Lasershot, and Stalker Predator toys, and their associated NECA remakes.

A bunch of NECA Alien figures

Two shelves of Predator figures - there's a mix of stuff from the movies, the comics, video games, the Batman: Dead End fan-film, all kinds of random stuff. I can take close-up pics if there's interest.

A bunch of random Aliens - I like to collect different versions of the OG "Big Chap" Alien from the first movie when possible.

NECA's Queen Alien. I also have the McFarlane one from circa 2003 but it's in a box somewhere.

Three Aliens from the AvP Arcade Game

Dutch and Linn from the arcade game. They also made figures of the two Predators, but I passed on them because they're basically repaints of the figures for the Predators from the first two movies.

An Alien and the Newborn from 'Alien Resurrection'

The Alien from 'Alien Isolation', the Neomorph from 'Alien: Covenant', the Deacon from 'Prometheus', and a random Alien from 'Aliens'.

Random Kenner stuff (the rest are in boxes somewhere). Yes, the Scorpion Alien still explodes.

Micro Machines Action Fleet APC; this thing is pretty rare as it didn't see a retail release. Note the splattered Alien on the undercarriage, and the miniature Hudson and Alien inside. The Alien is actually the smallest Alien figure any company has made to date.

Action Fleet Predator Dropship, based on the design from the original AvP comic series.

The Predator 2 trophy wall from the end of the movie. I need to repair it and it's missing a couple human skulls, otherwise it would match the way it looked in the movie. There's also a couple bonus skulls: a Predator skull, a Super-Predator skull, and an Engineer skull and spine.

NECA remake of the Kenner Mantis Alien

NECA Power Loader, please excuse the dust

Whole lotta Aliens/Predator/AvP novels

Art books, RPG books, stuff like that. Not pictured: the blueprints book, which doesn't fit on the shelf. :negative:

Aliens/Predator/AvP comics. I used to have them all as single issues but I condensed them down into collections and trade paperbacks

NECA's Kenner Rhino Alien remake, next to the original

The Crusher, Raven, and a basic Alien from 'Aliens: Colonial Marines'. For a poo poo game, it actually got some pretty sweet merchandise.

I’m really, really hard to shop for, because everything I want I either
- already have the moment it comes out
- is really obscure and I had to source it from ebay
- I know how/where to buy it to get it cheapest
- some combination thereof

I think big blockbusters needing to be giant international hits is what really killed films. Like, I'm not some CHUD making GBS threads on other countries, but if you have to write a film that will both appeal to, make sense to, and appease everyone from flat-brim hat Avengers fans to Chinese workers to Chinese censors to UAE audiences etc etc everything has to become such flattened-down pap that all that's left is colorful spectacle.

Oh my collection has nothing on Harry Harris, who has a bunch of original movie props including the full size Alien Queen puppet from ‘Aliens’.

Fun fact: the Queen puppet used in ‘Alien Resurrection’ was on-loan from Harris’ personal collection, meaning they used the exact puppet from the second movie when making Resurrection. They painted it brown for Resurrection, but after filming they repainted it to match how it looked for ‘Aliens’ before returning it.

The Friday the 13th game isn't anywhere near as scary as Alien: Isolation but it's easily the ultimate game that franchise will ever get, even if bullshit rights issues forced the devs to stop DLC and the Jason X content. Kane Hodder does the mocap, Tom Savini designed a "Jason from Hell" design. A few of the old actors consented to give their likeness. The maps are varied and filled with fanservice. Even in its neutered state it's worth a bargain buy:

Illfonic, the devs, just released that Predator: Hunting Grounds game which looks... it looks like it has a lot of the same general advantages of their Friday the 13th game but the commando gunplay looks really unexciting. Can anyone confirm?

The game is buggy as gently caress. The Predator is a glass cannon, the team of 4 commandos is more than a match for the predator and the NPC guerillas they face do dumb poo poo like shot walls rather than at the commandos. Don't buy it.

i picked up F13 recently on a whim cause it was $5. I feel like it has been worth the few hours of play I've put in so far.

The main downside is the people who--I wish I was kidding--still think slurs and verbal abuse are cool in 2020. Got lucky the first few games with some cool players/teammates, then next few matches were just "r***ard" "f*****t" "n*****" everywhere with "you suck" no matter what anyone would be doing. And sadly the muting function doesn't seem to work (), I had to block them on Steam to stop being subjected to hearing it constantly.

I really did like the "Virtual Cabin" which is like a tour of Friday the 13th movie memorabilia. I'm not super familiar with the movies so I probably missed the bulk of the fanservice but even I still picked up on a bit of it.

It's really frustrating because you can definitely point to very tangible differences in the way movies were made before they had to have worldwide universal appeal. Those movies tend to be better and more engaging, but they do expect more of their audience. There are small subtleties in the storytelling and writing that just don't translate across the world. And that's okay. The problem is that people raised on those movies haven't learned how to enjoy anything else.

I'd be hard-pressed to describe any difference between movies from the 2000s and movies from the 2010s, and I usually tend to notice such things (this was more evident before everything got remastered, but I've always sworn there was this seismic shift in how movies generally looked pre- and post 1987, for instance).

I'm watching Kingdom, which is a Korean zombie thing. I am 100% certain I am missing huge chunks of stuff due to lacking cultural background but it's still light years better than it would be if they'd tried to generify it.

The funniest part of "generic" american films is how much extremely american stuff is left in because the people making it don't realise that it's american stuff.
