my parents are still rocking a pre-2010 plasma. it looks great but it’s basically like having a campfire in the living room, it’s loving crazy how much heat it puts off, I want to go it a kill-a-watt on it just to see how crazy the number is.

i have a pioneer from 2006, and three panasonics from 2008 and there is burn in on zero of them, even though 2 of them were used for video games, and 1 of them is on pretty much 16 hours a day

yeah i'm sure. oled is considerably dimmer than competing technologies. it's gotten better but it will never be as good as lcd or plasma

for added fun, due to the way oled works, the brighter you drive a pixel, the more wear and tear it incurs

so burn-in is back, baby

i managed to only ever have plasma screens and now oled. i've never purchased or had an LCD TV in my home. i've always hated LCD with a passion for TV/movie viewing. the cheapest plasma always looked better than the most expensive LCD. i would take a plasma from 2006 over an lcd from 2020 and i'm not even joking (assuming both were brand new). ive seen the most expensive LCDs in stores and they always have the shittiest viewing angles and i always notice the motion blur/response rates

i got rid of my plasma last year because lcd tvs have steadily improved

blacks still aren't as good, but with enough local dimming zones they are ok. and a modern lcd is bigger, brighter, and has equal color rendition

i like to think about "what might have been" with plasma, but the reality is that a modern lcd or oled is, in many ways, better than the plasmas of yore

someone post that graph of how close you have to sit to notice the difference between 1080p and 4k. i assume all the models are still chasing resolution over nice hdr contrast and reduced blur etc etc.

wrong as usual. my panasonic ST-60, which was one of the best plasma TVs made before plasma TVs died, has a spec max brightness of around 82 nits. low end oled tvs can put out around 150 full-screen nits. so "never as good" is already "nearly twice as good as the last, best generation of plasma tvs"

Bloody
Mar 3, 2013

to be fair, the ZT-60 halo model last and literal best plasma TV ever made had a max brightness of 159 nits, so i suppose that is competitive with a bog standard oled.

the main win from getting 4k versions of your favorite movies is increased color depth

my vision isn't good enough to make out the increased resolution but improved color is very visible if you have a decent tv set

are you talking dithering or something cuz i don't see how gamut and pixel count could be related.

Beve Stuscemi

all I know is I had an oled ps vita and every time the screen went full black you could see splotches in the OLED and it bugged more more than I liked the increased saturation so I sold it

then i ran across an LCD model vita at a garage sale and bought it and black screens are just black and it no longer bothers me. I still don’t play it though because the vita has no games

the standards for 4k tv also increase gamut (rec 2020)

so the only way to get movies with better gamut is to buy the 4k uhd version

despite owning a very large tv and sitting very close to it i don't notice any difference in sharpness, but the increased color depth is very much welcome

they called that the "coffee stain effect" and it only affected launch Vitas iirc

I have an oled vita and i wouldn't trade it for anything. a game like Rayman Legends looks almost fake; like it was superimposed on the screen or like it was drawn on it.

i turn off literally every single processing "feature" on my oled tv and in fact set everything to "game mode" no matter what i am watching so i am guessing i am not seeing those color benefits?

it was all the oled vitas, similar to the launch psp they reached just a little too far with the display. all of them were affected to some degree, most of them you could only see the defect when the screen was on and solid black but some of them were bad enough that it was visible all the time.

ok these oled tvs that have the same msrp as my plasma did in 2013, or less than half the cost of the ZT60, not adjusted for inflation.

i'm one of those people that goes nuts if theres a speck of dust or single dead pixel on my screen and i never noticed it, even in black areas. but even if i did i am pretty sure the benefits of oled outweighed that issue, to me at least

i could only see it on mine when the screen was black, i was in a dark room, and my eyes had about a half-second to adjust so it was fine for me, but i cans understand how people with different eyes or a more affected screen could get upset.

I still like it for its endless waterfall of content, but they are not doing themselves any favours. I mean, the porno ban I wasn't so upset by, plenty other places online to host that, but the automatic recognition they are using is still abysmal.

no you should be seeing those color benefits

(of course, not all 4k content bothers with the increased color depth, sometimes it's just a less-downscaled version of whatever they did for the dvd)
