Oh man the place I get topsoil, mulch, landscape stuff, etc was so loving packed on Friday when I went to get some topsoil. I've never in my life seen it like that, it was insane. I wouldn't have gone in but I had to for work though luckily didn't come close to anyone but the cashier to pay. I have to go back there to get more stuff this week and not looking forward to it. The good thing seems that most everyone here wears masks, I've only seen a few that haven't. I can't imagine the mess that is going to happen in the areas that people think wearing a mask is infringing on their rights that are also opening up more places to blast their freedom germs all over each other.

My sister in law works at a garden centre and has been back at work 2 days, apparently it's the busiest they've ever been. They gave her a mask but no costumers are wearing them.

So a bit of a follow up from my post in Terrible Car stuff where I was going to see a Fiat 124 Coupé. Went there yesterday and did a pretty thorough check as well as a test drive. The good: ¤ Seems like a pretty honest car, no (as Uncle Tony would say) obvious fuckery a-foot . They just sorted the brakes enough for it to pass inspection and left everything else. ¤ Fiat Twin-cam engines sound insane. drat cool sound. Oh and the manual gearbox felt fantastic to use. ¤ The car had been repainted sometime in its life to white, and I couldn't find much (if any) signs of over-use of bondo. Checked all the edges for wobblyness and sloppy sanding as well as went round with a magnet. At one part where the paint was flaking off, there was no bondo underneath. Some bubble spots etc, but don't really care as I'd remove the paint panel by panel anyway and redo the whole car. The boot (trunk) was free from anything more than light surface rust. All in all, the body was pretty rust free except for the four corners of the car where is curves under the car, and passing inspection here should mean that the chassis is too. Which kinda brings me to the bad: ¤ Undercoating. Oh dear. I think this picture kinda represents what I found. This is one of the driver side jacking points:  While this was the worst, and the passenger side ones felt solid when knocking with my hand on them, it wouldn't surprise me if it's a  of rust underneath all that undercoating. Talked to the dealer about it, apparently super popular in the 80's to throw this kind of undercoating on everything. ¤ The internet wasn't kidding when they talk about the "Italian driving position". Jesus christ I'm 6'4" with long legs. I fit torso wise, but my right leg was jammed between the center console/steering wheel/gear with the knee and foot joints at weird and super uncomfortable angles and I had to sit far away from the steering wheel for my legs to even fit, so I couldn't properly reach the steering wheel lol. Some serious modification would be necessary for me to be able to drive one of these. ¤ I'm not an expert, but my gut says that using coolant hoses to route the fuel filler opening to the gas tank isn't right, and might have been why it smelled heavily of fuel in the boot (drat, picture got blurry):  The mechanicals seemed fine. It obviously needs all bushings replaced etc as everything is probably older than me. Steering was a bit vague. Oh and the car had a tendency to almost skip/jump forward when in first gear and low speeds. Bad fuel delivery at that speed? All in all, great learning experience. Never driven anything older than 1998 before, so I was a bit nervous about hating it. Didn't, and can really see myself in a classic car. Also great learning experience to go through inspecting the car. I forgot to check stuff like the dipstick for carbon, coolant for sludge etc. I did look at the exhaust when they started it, a puff of blue smoke then nothing (which is how it should be, right?). I won't be driving >7 hours in total to look a car any more though. poo poo sucks. Edit: Also, I think there is a big disconnect between how much I think it's worth and how much they think it's worth. Yes it's a rare car, but it's not very valuable which just got proven today when an AC coupe shows up in better condition for 60% of the price... When someone suffers a concerning wound, you flood the area surrounding the wound with rabies immune globulin -- antibodies -- to bind up the virus at the site. Then, distant from the site, you inject the rabies vaccine on days 0, 3, 7, and 14 to prompt the patient to mount his or her own immune response. That immune globulin injection typically is weight-based and around 9-11 milliliters or so; the vaccine shots are much smaller. Vaccines are great because you can give them whenever to protect someone in the future, while Ig is an attempt to decrease current viral burden in someone who doesn't have time to mount a immune response, which takes a while.

Huh. No wonder my garage remote won't work. Brokeback turned my parking space at work into a superfund site.  That's ATF. It usually leaves a little bit when I park, but not that much! Looked under it, didn't see it dripping.. started it up, it started dripping pretty steadily... from the drat filter.  Wonder if I double-gasketed it and it just took a long time to start leaking, or if the filter itself has failed?

Yeah, water Leaks are the worst things to deal with too. Welcome to home ownership  . I've now had 2 different companies attempt to fix a leak in my roof and it is getting better but still there slightly. Had the second ones back last week to have another look and after we stripping the inside of the roof out we have decided that there must be a hairline crack in the lead flashing. It is now all painted with sealant on the outside in the hopes that this will do the job until i can get all the flashing replaced. I suspect it is going to turn into a complete re-tile and re-flash job because the 70 y.o concrete tiles pretty much disintegrate when you touch them now

Hah you guys are giving me PTSD over my first house. I should write it all up at some point while I still remember. 24 years old, just married, 80 year old house. It was a major fixer upper, and there was one room with a roof leak that we just decided to "ignore" and kept the door shut. By the time we got the roof re-done there were actual mushrooms growing out of the wall in the corner of the ceiling. The crazy part is that it was super easy to repair the water damage because the house was built on a concrete slab with cinder block walls inside and out. The interior walls were finished with chicken wire and plaster. So we just scraped off the soft damaged plaster, hit it with kilz and re-finished it. If you want a quiet house, it's a great way to build it. But drat was it cold. Zero insulation except whatever cinder block porosity gives you. It must have been some experimental "concrete is the future" house, because the only wood used anywhere in construction was the ceiling joists and roof frame, but even then they insulated the attic with GRAVEL (which the previous owner let her cats use as a massive litter box, *shudder*), and the roof had a 1-1/4" thick layer of light aggregate concrete spread directly on the sub-roof which was tongue and groove planks. The roofer lost his rear end because the tear off was about 3x the weight of a usual shingle tear off. And it had 3 layers of shingles on top of the concrete. Right before we sold it we sprung a water leak. Woke up to a room with an inch of water on the brand new carpet. The plumbing was all copper pipe poured in to the concrete foundation, and a pipe cracked where it came out of the floor. Jackhammering down to replace the cracked pipe caused it to crack in another spot, so a day after the repair we had to do it all over again. Turned out the plumbers ran out of elbows when they installed the pipe so they just bent it a couple times by hand to make a 90. Creases and all. These are just a few of the problems with that house. No wonder I didn't buy again until over 10 years later.

Also buy an AC 1608 if you can find one they look 100x better and have the best engine. But I didn't realize you are so tall. A 124 is probably not for you. I don't mind the seating position, it's a little weird but not bad, but I'm 5'10, not too heavy, and pretty equal in limb and torso. My dad is similar to your dimensions and he doesn't really fit in most of those 70s roadsters. The skipping is probably gearbox or clutch related if it's at low vehicle speeds rather than engine speeds, another reason to pass. A little smoke on startup is pretty normal.

The AC is great looking, but probably even rarer. I remember asking on the Swedish Alfa club about what can be done to the driving position on the GTV6 (one of my attainable dream cars) and I remember them talking about spacer for the steering wheel and removing part of the substructure of the seat to get it a bit lower. Anyway I think I'm going to try to go see as many classics as possible that are of interest and not rush it. Learned a ton from inspecting this car. Thanks for the help  .

It's not a sports car, it was never really intended to be despite it being used in races (which it very rarely won, proving the point). It is however an extremely comfortable tourer (the seats are fantastic), sounds lovely and looks pretty great too. I'll never pretend it's an amazing car, anyone who does is stupid but for the time period it's a cushy cruiser with enough go to get out of its own way and still great fun on the odd track day and doing the occasional skid. If you get a chance to drive one, do it, they don't take much persuading to go sideways which as you can imagine is even more fun in the wet. Even family cars are faster than a Mk3 these days but that's not the reason you buy a classic

Now we don’t have rabies here, so our health system doesn’t automatically cover it, so if you get bit overseas, and seek post exposure treatment on your return, worst case is you go to a private travel vaccination clinic and pay for the vaccine and a consult fee. NZ$95 per vial and probably another 100 for the consult. If your travel insurance doesn’t cover it, and you meet the fairly simple criteria, you can apply to have ACC (govt no fault accident care cover) reimburse you after the fact. Now while ACC has its flaws, it means you don’t have to worry about an accident loving up your life beyond the medical impact. ACC even covers tourists when you visit here. Not for illness (that’s the other side of the single payer health system), but if you break your leg on a hike or get in a car wreck because you drove off on the wrong side of the road, or just slip over while drunk as gently caress, you’ll get patched up. Insulated the garage door with two pre-made kits. Holy poo poo i should have done this when I bought the house. It's insane how much it quieted the door opening and closing. I also put a portable AC unit in there as it's drywalled and holy crap, I'll be able to do projects in the summer in my south facing garage without dying of heatstroke. It's a south facing garage and I'm in Houston so it's hot and humid as hell. Ordered a whipple supercharger kit for my SS as well. It's a couple weeks out but I'll shoot pics in the update thread when I do it. Excited for that. Everyone else stay safe :/
