The trailer doesn't show the talking volcano, which is obviously a painted background, but it's a good look into what this has.

It's an adaptation of two Jules Verne novels kinda crammed together.

Shoulda watched the RoboCop cartoon

I think when you think about it the reason Inspector Gadget had to be obviously brain damaged is that if he actually had any sense he would have kicked the bad guys' asses utterly effortlessly. IIRC you see a few times where he's aware Penny is in danger and suddenly grows several magnitudes of competence. (Mind you, Gadget is usually a particular kind of stupid where he's not unintelligent or incapable but tends to jump to conclusions, fall for the most obvious ruses and double down on his wrong assumptions)

He plays for the dreamers that forgot how to dream, and the lovers that forgot how to love.
I'd like a version of Inspector Gadget where criminals have become afraid of him simply because they know his wiring is poo poo, but also civillians aren't comfortable around him either, so he's never invited to stuff because he could pull out a confetti cannon at a child's birthday only for it to fire something less fun (which hasn't happened because it's not grimdark it's just a worry people have), or a criminal facing a gadget that maybe intended to be an oil slick but it could be anything that comes out of there, like on the one hand it could be toothpaste, on the other it could be gasoline, and you just don't want to risk it. The story is Gadget trying to get his poo poo in order while trying to get his reputation out of the hole he's dug for it.

The movie was dumb though because the gently caress ups weren't actually his fault - in the second movie they kind of admit that the chip that powers him is garbage, and in the first one it just raises questions like "Why does he have a gallon of toothpaste up his sleeve?" He asked for an oil slick, that wasn't his fault he's poorly wired and has random irrelevant chemicals in varying sacks in his body.

Inspector Gadget is fun because he's so obviously incompetent, that his niece and dog solve all the mysteries and foil the plots while he takes all the credit. I'm sure someone's written an good feminist reading of the show somewhere.

Also the show exists because TMS wanted to make a Lupin III spinoff show in the future but got denied.

Definitely no coincidence, Gadget has a mustache in the pilot and everything. Part of why they removed it was because they figured it was too brazen. But in the end I guess they took the most from Get Smart with the pulled out of their rear end gadgetry an just sort of careening into mission accomplished (I mean Don Adams voices him and all so that's a given).

paper thin plot, very good action sequences especially the car chase/apartment fight sequence, intense tension almost throughout the film. Worth a watch but don't expect anything nuanced.

It happened enough they had special cop task forces that just went into theaters to arrest people for it. That was part of a general harassment of those places, but there was a lot of mob connections with the porn industry (and actual violence when some of the groups clashed over territory). More people used the individual booths (both loops and ones with live dancers) for self pleasure, to the point where people make jokes about whoever gets hired to clean them up. Some of this is covered in the book The Other Hollywood: The Uncensored Oral History of the Porn Film Industry

I really loved Extraction, it was a John Wick knockoff but a really well-executed one. It was directed by the stunt coordinator for some of the better MCU movies and I now firmly believe that every action movie should be directed by a stunt coordinator.

I have to challenge this, because looking him up, he did the stunts for Captain America 3 which I thought not only had terrible fight choreography on its own merits, but especially in contrast to Captain America 2, which has one of the absolute best fight coordination of any superhero movie.

Also the original series was a French-American co-production and the character was co-created by two French dudes and an ex-Hanna Barbera story writer, which makes the Clouseau/Get Smart combo make a lot more sense.

Also they kept trying to reboot the show during the 90s and the 00s, and the results were exactly as awful as you'd expect:

In this series he actually got a promotion and became Lieutenant Gadget which is super weird
