You're not missing much. The first book has a solid narrative centered around the first 100 colonists and the political factions that spring up around the most charismatic, but it's broken up by dozens of pages of straight geology porn. The second book tries to have a narrative but makes the mistake of focusing on the worst character from the first book, who turns out to not only be an author proxy but an author wish-fulfillment proxy, and more geology porn. The third book seems to realize that was a mistake and becomes more of a series of vignettes with some cool stuff, but still features oodles of geology descriptions and a gross scene where a sexy young Martian Amazon girl fucks the now 120 year-old author proxy :barf:. It was also written right in that gap of the late 80s/early 90s when the internet became a "thing" so in the third novel you can feel the author scrambling to catch up and slyly integrate things like email and cellular communication which weren't really factors in the first two books.

I was a lovely loving 90s kid who thought these covers looked hokey and as an adult I don't know why. These own.

But nah, I was into Animorphs:

Even at the time though, it was like "these aren't going to age well." And they haven't!

The real poo poo though, was Mindwarp by Chris Archer. It was very much a derivative of Animorphs, about unrelated kids in the same school who came down with alien-induced superpowers. I forget why, either one of their parents were an alien or they touched some silver goo or something. The cool part about these covers was that the silver bit was done in embossed foil, which was the style at the time:

The one gimmick that really stuck is that the first six or so books were each dedicated to a different kid. Then the narratives merged and each chapter had a different POV, and in the first crossover book every kid had to talk about how they hated their power and were jealous of all the other kids--"Oh I can speak every language, but it's not a combat skill." "Oh I can see the future but only when I sleep." "Oh I can swim amazingly, yay that makes me the Aquaman. I have to hope there's water somewhere." "I turn into a fighting machine but I have to trance out, it's like I'm just a vessel for my power"-- with the notable exception of the girl who can shoot electricity who is all ":smug: Yeah my power rules. :smug:"

This is the cover for the Finnish translation of The Man in the High Castle from 1992. It's my favorite book cover of all time.

That's solid.

I've never read any of these magazines, but the artwork is pretty fantastic.

I feel like there's something else that needs to be the main topic there. Like, I get that it's weird that the girl is green, and that that might be her defining trait and it warrants looking into, but I feel there are other pressing matters at hand that deserve greater prominence

Christopher Priest's "Inverted World" is about a city on rails that must be pulled north 1/10th of a mile every day.

The edition I have has this kinda disappointing cover:

So, he got permission from Vonnegut, but 1) Vonnegut wasn't super happy with it to begin with, 2) people kept assuming Vonnegut wrote it, and 3) a poorly worded article suggested Farmer would have written the book even without Vonnegut's permission.

This robot fucks. Those Coville books got me into sci-fi, fantasy, and horror, and I will always remember them fondly for that. In "Search for Snout," I think, they go to a monastery that's a giant tree and the oldest parts are the roots. The monks have a saying to the effect of, "there's always another layer," meaning the roots have hidden depths. I always think of that when I see on these very same dead, gay forums, "there's always more and it's always worse."

That's a super weird take considering all the Disney stuff that predates it. Hell, Betty Boop was originally a dog. Also the Animorphs just turned into actual animals, not furries! This doesn't add up at all...
