Oh that's actually a really complex question, and I'm not current on FL Prime stuff so it may have been elaborated more, but the long and short of it is that a Judgement (which are the the stars/suns) came into the Neath a long time ago to investigate what Our Sun hid down there. Remember the bit in the ending where the sky begins to light up like you're back on the surface, but the light is coming from beneath the waves? That's it. It's still searching for.....something, even though we know what the sun hid (it's lover and child)? It is the Traveler and also Salt? The 'pale, white thing' is a sort of long alluded to mystery, most likely another Judgement. In my theories it's always been the moon, but its described as a "hall of poisonous white crystal." Its the one who sent Salt on the journey. Part of the problem is that Judgements tend to exist outside of linear time to some degree

Fallen London's lore is really fun to get into and pick apart the intricacies of because they flow on an elegant level in motion and when you put them in more blunt terms it's actually pretty funny to consider the logistics of. That said, Sunless Skies is the better game/product due to being unapologetically political, queer, easy to access with difficulty sliders that don't just call you an idiot for wanting to play for the plot and the plot itself is also less obtuse to understand. Also it was made absent of Kennedy who is a sex pest weirdo who likes to make things needlessly grindy and hard.

I gotta say, the Kennedy stuff coming out made for my absolute worst week in the past year, including the pandemic. I wrote about 30,000 words of literary analysis on Cultist Simulator and got my essay retweeted by Kennedy two months before finding out I never wanted to touch that lore ever again. And I'd finished about 20,000 words of followup commentary literally the day before learning the sex pest stuff along with the rest of the cultsim discord. I am never going to get into FL/SS/SSkies because of sheer bitter frustration, even though they're pretty thoroughly post-Kennedy by all accounts.

Yeah you can just throttle fuel and supplies consumption way the hell down and go further out into the High Wilderness. Basically once I proved I could do a given thing (Enigma trading or whatever) I would cheat myself more cash just to speed poo poo along. The idea of sinking 20 hours into a game then getting smacked with a pretty hard reset is no Bueno. Did the same thing with Cultist Sim.
