Got my Al Adamson set today. Pretty excited to dive into it over the next month or two.

Should I try disc 8 first or are they all bad and I should contact Severin?

I think they are all bad. It's not properly formatted or something, so it doesn't load. Severin will send you a new copy, according to a Facebook post. I'm jealous you have it, mine is still in transit.

Thanks I found the post you mentioned and they're shipping the disc to all buyers automatically, no request for replacements needed. That's pretty cool.

It's most likely going to be in many top 10 lists at the end of the year, so I have no regrets about that purchase. I read there's an error on disc 8 that makes the Blu-ray unplayable, but they are fixing / replacing it, so no worries. A top 10 list with Al Adamson next to Lawrence of Arabia, what a strange world we live in.

This is definitely the year of the box set.

Yo yo yo, I'm about to upgrade my TV from a 32" 1080i TV I bought in 2007 to a 65" 4K HDR display, hit me with UHD must-haves that'll make my eyes bleed.

The first ones I'll grab probably being the Evil Dead movies because at this point buying Evil Dead in another format is just a deep-seated running gag.

Anime Deviant
Spiderverse
Wizard of Oz
2001
Blade Runner (either)
The 5th Element

Tammy and the T-Rex. Not even joking, that is an exceptionally clean and bright picture. Rad will probably have an equally stellar picture. And that’s a segue to remind y’all that VinSyn’s half way sale starts this weekend, Friday at 12:01am EST.

Suspiria, Pineapple Express, 2001: A Space Odyssey (it looks like it was shot yesterday), Alien, Blade Runner

Yep. It's quite good, tho the real comedy winner is Pineapple Express. That one is a pure 4K transfer (Step Brothers comes from a 2K finish to an upscale).

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Pineapple-Express-4K-Blu-ray/145675/

quote:

"Stunning." Without having any previous experience with the movie, having neither seen it nor reviewed either of its previous Blu-ray releases, the immediate reaction to Sony's 2160p UHD/HDR Blu-ray is one of awe, awe at the image's robustness, stability, and even and endlessly attractive filmic veneer. Grain is constant and evenly distributed, gorgeously textured and a key in bringing a true cinematic flavor and experience to the home. Detailing underneath is nothing short of a revelation. Rogen's brown sports coat is particularly impressive, reveling fine stitch work, seams, and tiny flaws in every scene. His car interior, and Franco's character's home, are treasure troves of little details. Whether grime on the seatbelt, wear on the dashboard and steering wheel, or the definition with which tiny little trinkets in the home are revealed even as background details is amazing. Likewise, facial textures are precise and highly revealing even in medium shots. Very fine pores, facial hairs, and other skin textures are remarkably lifelike.

Colors are likewise healthy and rich. The movie favors a predominance of brows and tans and other, similar earthy shades, particularly on clothes but also in key environments like Saul's home. Even so, the transfer's ability to so effortlessly manage them, to reveal exacting subtleties and variations in shade, and to offer a fullness and richness in the HDR color space is magnificent. Of course, there's more variety in the movie. Lush natural greens pop, red blood is appropriately authentic, and various support shades all impress with a full, refined appearance. Skin tones hold healthy and true, if not pushing to a very slight warmth that compliments that predominance of brown. Black levels are deep and accurate, never crushing details or appearing unnaturally pale.

The Shining was astounding on UHD; that movie really benefits from maxed out detail. Can’t wait for the 4K of Spartacus.

The most recent version of Apocalypse Now is also worth seeking out. Looks incredible, sounds just as good, doesn’t drag like either of its predecessors.

I know what you did last summer, and frankly I am displeased.
That entire movie looks like it's made of candy. I loving love it. I wish they'd give more stuff like that to the Wachowskis, although the performance of that movie is exactly why they aren't getting movies like that.

The final race sequence is like a kid's hyperactive sugar rush building and building to an actual out-of-body experience, I think I full on dissociated in the theater. Speed Racer rules so hard.

Late to the UHD party but let me just say that in general I think the UHD format is at it's best if you're an action movie fan.

So none of these should really be surprising recommendations, but the Mission Impossible series, Fast & The Furious series, John Wick trilogy, and the Bad Boys movies are all really really nice looking UHDs. Punisher Warzone is another one that gets a lot of mentions around here and for good reason. There's also a decent amount of 80's and 90's action that's had UHD releases, and they're all really good(assuming you like the movies of course). Rambo trilogy, Air Force One, Cliffhanger, Predator, Backdraft, they're all the best they've ever looked for home media on UHD.

The complaints I read were that it fucks up the more darkly lit scenes compared to the existing blu ray. I didn't really notice that too much but I also didn't think it was really a standout transfer that I'd go out of my way to recommend either. I hadn't owned the movie at all before I bought the UHD though so I didn't regret buying it.

Oh, I didn't know about those issues, so maybe there is something wrong with the disc, like they encoded the HDR10 wrong (which isn't unheard of). I don't know though, I've only seen screencaps of the UHD disc but haven't seen it in person.

I picked up Hellriders, Rad, and Blood Harvest for now. Will probably pick up more tomorrow morning. Feel like I already have all the must haves (Tammy and the Trex, Christmas Evil, Frogtown, Dolemite, Liquid Sky) so I’m not sure what else to pick up.
