May 17 Quarantine Productivity Update:

Whipped up the cart for the blaster. It’s a bit short because I don’t have the casters yet. I’ll probably add a couple cleats on the inside of the bottom to keep it from sliding around since there’s no external flange to screw it down. I also ordered the HF dust collector to stick on there. I got a bulkhead fitting for the air connection to the gun so I can get a good seal there, instead of just passing the hose through a grommet. Also got a couple cheap LED flood lights to stick inside. This time next week I should be blasting baby!

More slow progress on the cart, got the upright backing plates cut out of 1/4” plate, edges smoothed a bit, and holes drilled. They’re not quite symmetrical but they’ll hold the car up fine, I reckon. Just have to weld them onto the uprights and then I can figure out how to get the car hanging on them.

I had to measure the side ways length between panels and cut that but it's easy to cut. It has standoffs that stick to the door panels to keep the middle pieces in place. It's a soft vinyl backing so if you touch it NBD.

Never mind that literally every game I've bought on physical disc for the Xbox One has had a huge zero-day download to install, completely negating the point of buying the physical disk - EXCEPT that you can sell the physical disc, and/or use it on any system instead of just the one you happen to be logged in on, which is not a trivial advantage.

Well don't you know I'm caught in a trap?

Hey Kastein,

You were the guy doing Lithium Ion battery reviews years ago, right?

Care to weigh in on this battery?

OEM Li battery from a 2018 Husqvarna dirt bike, "Skyrich" brand, appears to be exclusively sold at WalMart.

Bike was dying during long (>24hr) periods for a few weeks, then refused to start without being bumped. Removed battery and put on a charger, voltage decayed to 10.8ish within a few minutes of being taken off the charger after 24hrs on the charger, indicating at least one dead cell.

I was having a few beers in the garage so I decided to take it apart.

The encasement, top was very solidly affixed by much glue, but the case is bendy, brittle, thin ABS or PVC, and the top was even brittler, thinner ABS, so I had her apart with a flathead pretty quick.

Under the lid, an ominously swollen battery pack and some charge balancing circuitry, looks like a bunch of diodes and some resistors and capacitators, dunno if this is what it should look like.

The black poo poo on top isn't adhered well to anything, but the bulge is held in on the bottom, and I don't feel like trying to pry that fucker out, so surgery is in order.

Trying to blow a hole in my other set of Knipex so they match.

Uhhh

Ummm

With upgraded PPE I forged on, separating the individual
Paquettes, when I severed one side of that little piece of breadboard it sprang apart like it was fuckin' spring loaded, so I put some gloves on.

Figured Mr. Swelly there on the right was the culprit, but he measured out at 3.3V, two on the right are 3.8V each, Mr. Swelly's friend to the right (which has signs of swelling and being distended, then deflating) is StonedeadV.

I dunno if I killed this battery by leaving the key in on too many times (it's wired by Austrians, so if you hit the kill switch everything turns off automatically, except the fuel pump that quietly eats your battery) or by an ECU that has a failure mode of "turn poo poo on even with the key out of the ignition" (once again, because of Austrians) but I'd love to hear anyone's thoughts on the build quality of a modern Li battery.

E: a look at some of the beautiful masking tape afixation inside, probably doesn't need to be too fancy with that shrinkqrap overlayment.

I'm not super impressed but it's not horrific either. Did you balance charge it regularly? It should have been pretty alright if so, though draining it past the minimum cell voltage and recharging probably did it in. If not that, doing that till one shorted and then recharging it to specified voltage (cramming 4 cells worth of series voltage into 3...) Is probably what turned them into balloons.

Case could be better, but was probably good enough.

Balance circuit I can't quite decipher with hotsnot all over it but it looks like it's got a bunch of sot23 transistors, small (0805?) Resistors, and large power resistors in it. I would hazard a guess that it's your typical passive balancing circuit (just slowly dumps power from the highest voltage cells into the power resistors while charging) or even just a short circuit protection circuit to keep the balancer connector from melting if abused. It's definitely not an active balancing circuit which is the best kind to have. If it's just an SC protection circuit you really gotta balance semi regularly, if it's a passive balancer circuit it's somewhat optional to do so.

The soldering ain't anything to write home about but it's not fuckawful either.

Depending on the copper thickness on those crosslink PCBs they're either acceptable or bunk. I guess they could have just soldered the terminal strips together instead but that appears to give some stress relief or ease of assembly to the pack.

I dunno, I give it a C- if the advertising material stated no balancing required and that's not a passive BMS, B- if advertising stated balancing is needed, B if it's a passive BMS. It could be a hell of a lot worse. I'd buy it if the price was right and the advertising is accurate.

One of the issues with auto/vehicle lithium batteries outside of an OEM environment is that proper charge management (via BMS, coulomb counting, temp management, short circuit and deep discharge prevention... Etc) and ultra high current starter motor draw are in direct conflict. It's really hard to handle it correctly, and even harder, possibly even impossible, if you're trying to make it drop in to replace a regular flooded lead acid battery with equally low maintenance and installation tech requirements.

Elviscat
Jan 1, 2008

Well don't you know I'm caught in a trap?

There's no external balance connection, just the + and - terminals, so I assume it's just passively balanced. Is there a way to balance these if there's no external connection?

This is the OEM battery on this bike. Service manual says you're supposed to pull the battery and put it on the charger if it's not ridden in some ludicrously short interval, like a week, but they also assume you're a pro-MX rider and recommend service intervals to match. Before I blew it up I left the bike sitting for up to a month without operating or charging, battery fired it right up.

Those crosslink PCBs are kinda interesting, no current flows through them, they're just ladder-shaped strips with a big sheet of copper on every "fat" rung, the strips from the cells are threaded through the skinny rungs for mechanical strength, then soldered together on top.of the copper plates, the bare copper plate visible in the picture is an unused one.

I'm thinking of just putting an AGM in there, since my fat rear end doesn't benefit from a 235lb dirt bike over a 240lb one, but it feels sacrilegious, maybe I'll just get one of those giant "Remove Before Flight" lanyards to remind me to take my drat keys out.

I'm hoping that cell shorted and was draining the battery internally through the balance circuit, and it's not another problem.

I loving HATE diagnosing electrical issues on vehicles.

E: all the new KTM/Husqvarnas use this battery, it's really funny if you get a bunch of them together on a cold day, because they all just give a week cough and make the "starter trying to turn the engine over" sad noise the first time you try, then you wait a few seconds for the battery to warm up from that initial attempt and actually fire the engine. It's just silly to hear all these beautiful orang and blue and white MY2020 bikes sound like a bunch of dying shitheaps, while all the decade old Yamahas fire right off on the first kick.

Oh I see what's going on, I thought the connector to the internal battery wiring was the external balance connector and there was another for the internal wiring. Seems like I misinterpreted the crosslink PCBs too, but the way they did it is fine.

Basically as long as the balance board works as designed I don't really see an issue with this setup.

We had that issue on the Transition too - cold starts are a bastard with lithium. Right when I left we were redesigning the vehicle to use a hybrid ground drive system instead of a lovely CVT and it was looking like its battery and BMS were going to share space with the starting battery and I was looking at putting a heater blanket on both instead of using the "try starting it, wait, then actually start" method, but that's actually exactly how we started it for every flight test in winter :v:

Made pizza from scratch, including the crust for the first time in probably 30 years. I had pizza yeast and the store had a decent deal on mozza balls, so I figured why not.

Turned out OK - re-learned some old tricks (like flouring my transfer plate so the crust doesn't stick) so I'll probably attempt it again sometime in the semi near future.

Toppings were pepperoni, bit salami, fresh mushrooms, feta cheese, mozza, small bit of cheddar bit of pineapple on one small section. The made from scratch pizza sauce was probably the star though.

Even though I preheated the oven and pizza stone to temperatures found near the surface of Venus, I made an error and left the pans on the rack underneath it (wanted something in case it dripped) which made the crust ever so slightly underdone to my preference. I prefer some nice browning and crispness - but it was just under that level of doneness :( The outside crust makes the crust look way thicker than it was - my jumbo size platter I was using for holding the pizza as I made it wasn't quite big enough to the edge hung over the sides, forcing me to to a super quick rearrangement once on my hot stone.

Still, tasted great but not as good as the local ethnic mom-pop place we prefer.
