What is a bung in this situation? I'm imagining it has solid material on both sides of the wall, but I thought a bung was something like a cork. Also, what does the figure-8 shaped setup that fell over normally do?

Sorry, I guess bunghole, or port, would have been more apt. It's a resin tank for composite injection. It holds the overflow resin in a pressure injection process. The resin usually runs a few hundred PSI at about 300°F. It's a nasty sight when a line bursts and sprays someone, I can't imagine what a tank like that in service would do.

That's a pretty good example of a weld being really strong but the process of welding weakening the surrounding metal.

Re: Jack stands: Do yourself a favor and get a pair of ESCO jack stands. My car weighs 1.5 tons and each jack stand is rated for 3 tons for a total of 6 tons with the set. They are expensive, but worth it. Especially on my stupid BMW that has jack points that you need an adapter for. To top of the jack stand is the same thing on the jack itself. It comes with removable rubber pads that you can use for lifting with pinch welds or a flat metal surface. I got a cheap harbor freight jack because I'm not under the car while jacking it up. I spent money on the jack stands because my life depends on them.

It's so funny I was looking at the pictures of the harbor freight ones and went "why aren't there just pins in this thing?" like how hard is it just to do simple pins vs some sort of ratcheting system. It's almost like they want people to die lol.

The ratchet allows more positions of adjustment, and works fine when not made of cheese.

Well then why not a safety pin so it doesn't just drop the whole way. It's dumb to rely on just a ratchet alone.

Probably because it's more expensive but I wouldn't use stands without a pin. Here's what I got (6 ton version):

Where does the dislike for torx come from? It was the first good fastener standard and everything should use it, except for the applications more suitable for the common hex nut. The older standards are inferior and the newer ones are too rare and not enough of improvement over torx. All slot, phillips and hex sockets should be thrown in the Mount Doom.
Torx is great except it has WAY too many different sizes. I live in the Metricland and the thread diameters and the associated hex head sizes are very regular (M5 is 8mm, M8 is 13mm, M10 is 17mm and so on) and I can just eyeball those, but torx? Yeah good luck figuring out if it's T8 or T10 without sticking in various bits and wiggling them around.

Agreed, my dirtbike is all Torx/metric hex combo, they include this sweet little socket/torx toolkit for trail maintenance, and even though there's like 5 torx sizes in it, there's a Torx on the bike that none of those fits.

Safety aside, an actual flat-top jackstand is worth every penny for unibody cars.

The real mechanical failure is holding up your car on a pinch weld with a design that exists to hold frame rails and solid axles.
