Sir Not Appearing posted:I did a little searching and the little I found says either: Speaking of, I read yesterday that God's Own Country on Amazon is missing scenes, particularly sex scenes. Amazon released a statement stating that it wasn't their doing, that it's the version that the studio (MGM) sent to them. MGM said they edited it because they thought the scenes would force an M rating on the film. Apparently though, the original version is available on Kanopy, a streaming service I keep forgetting is available to pretty much everybody.

Since we’re talking about missing scenes in shows, is there anywhere in the US that is streaming the European version of Vikings? It seems strange that streaming services would only have the censored version of the show available, but that’s all I can find

Okay i cant believe i waited THIS long to watch Happiness of the Katakuris but it randomly being on Prime is part of the reason i feel like Prime has a deeper bench of random good old/foreign films compared to Netflix where it usually peters into crap after the first 20 titles. Keep going with Prime and you'll find buried gems. Anyway if you havent seen it, SEE IT. This is without a doubt my favorite Takashi Miike film. I'd watched his films when i was around 17 or 18 and i havent revisited any since (i guess i did see Thirteen Assassins in terms of his newer stuff) but im comfortable saying i dont wanna revisit poo poo like Dead or Alive or Ichi the Killer or Visitor Q as a grown rear end man. Just kinda too edgy/disgusting/completely unnecessary. But Happiness of the Katakuris is hilarious, it makes me wish Miike made more films like this that toed the line without being too ridiculously Gaspar Noe misogyny/violence/gross out edgy bullshit. Maybe he has? I know he's prolific as gently caress, i've only seen maybe 5 or 6 films of his in my life. Anyway, bits of John Waters, Tim and Eric, Little Shop of Horrors, and a healthy dose of grotesque and funny claymation. It's surreal, horrible, and hilarious. Loved it, lost my poo poo so many times. Somehow when i was an edgy teen exploring Noe, Miike, Haneke, whatever, i avoided Katakuris. Prolly cuz i was just like "pshh a silly musical with like, zombies??? Sounds tame/lame. I'm gonna watch this 'Irreversible' thing." I was a pretty hosed up stupid pretentious edgy teen. Miike has done a lot of films, not even the majority of them are horror or hosed up. His Crows Zero adaptations were fantastic. He also did a Phoenix Wright movie.

Giri / Haji is one of the best things I've seen in a while. If you like cop stuff that is funny and doesn't take itself too seriously (or does it?) and enjoy Japan/England then I 1000% suggest you check it out. Netflix. Also watched The Virtues  because I wanted something hard-hitting and I the final episode left me gasping for air. poo poo was insane. Stephen Graham is an incredible actor.

Super cliche but Audition, it was the first one I saw and just absolutely loved it. e: Also helps that it's a bit hosed up, but still one you can watch with friends/family and not get labeled as a degenerate. While One Missed Call is nominally a horror film, it's actually a dark satire of horror and is very good Sukiyaki Western Django is good and moody, very much a western Yakuza Apocalypse is another hot one.

Sukiyaki Western Django is basically Miike aping Kill Bill era Tarantino without any of the love for the source material, it looks good but it's absolutely terrible. edit: Except for the credits, those are good

Finally watched The Perks of Being a Wallflower and it was as annoying as I had assumed it would be. There's a difference between nostalgia for the 90s and nostalgia for 90s movies. And I don't even know what the "Come On Eileen" scene was about. I was a dumb hipster in high school in the 90s and trust me, nobody was getting excited about that song. That was what our parents listened to.

Patton Oswalt's new special wasn't as good as his old ones. Not sure how other goons feel about him and/or his standup. The only bit that stuck out at me was the one about Jesus being an exaggerated amalgamation of a bunch of guys unexpectedly not being assholes throughout history.

Basically, MUBI's traditional model has been to have 30 films streaming at all times -- one new film is added and and one film leaves every day. I just watched The Predator on Hulu, no, I don't know why, why do we do any of the things we do, why was the film The Predator produced, for instance? It was a crazy roller coaster of "oh man what a cool thing to have in a sci fi action movie, look at this cult favorite cast" and "why was this funded, did they hypnotize or threaten or otherwise forcibly induce the actors into saying these things while being filmed, maybe every production and cast member along the line thought they were playing some kind of advanced improv wargame"

Conan is so politically incorrect they have to water down the character until there's nothing of him left and it's just generic sword and sandal, and besides that I didn't feel it rose above one time distraction. Basically it felt like a movie I'd seen a hundred times already but it didn't feel like Conan. If Hollywood is going to make a good Conan movie then they have to put Conan in it and he needs to be the main character but I wouldn't expect that to happen anytime soon.
