With a couple of notable exceptions, the Voyager cast seems like a pretty chill decent group of people. It’s just a shame they were on the blandest possible Star Trek show.

I think they’re already falling into the same trap that a lot of rewatch podcasts do; most of the show’s episodes just aren’t interesting enough to warrant their own focused podcast episodes. They should have just grouped the lovely ones together or cherry-picked the most well-known eps to talk about. Another thing that would help a ton is if McNeill wasn’t so passive about everything and actually contributed to the conversation. Most of the time it’s just Wang rambling on. I actually liked their Caretaker episodes quite a bit, but man it’s been slim pickings since then.

Are there any other actual decent Trek podcasts that aren’t Greatest Gen or the Cirric Lofton/Aron Eisenberg one? I tried to get into Treks and the City but it’s really dependent on the guests.

I really like Treks and the City but yeah, it can be really hit or miss depending on the guests. Generally speaking the better episodes of TNG get better content but sometimes the terrible eps will have good comedy poo poo and good criticism.

If nothing else everyone should look up their interview with Jonathan Frakes because it's amazing and I wish he was my dad.

Well, looks like there's going to be an unofficial Voyager Reunion:

https://comicbook.com/startrek/news/star-trek-voyager-cast-reunion-jeri-ryan-25th-anniversary/

It looks like all the principals EXCEPT Kes (Jennifer Lien) are gonna show up.

Mulgrew sounds like she's got zero enthusiasm for a real Voyager reunion a la Picard, and Ryan said her four years on Voyager were not the most fun four years...

It's such a no-brainer though that I don't know how they didn't do it. Of course the guy who has grown up on spaceships his entire life, knows them inside out and should be able to fix a malfunctioning warp drive with a roll of tape or a grav plate with a hammer should be the engineer.

Given that it was an experimental ship, they could've had Mayweather as the engineer and Trip as the warp specialist who helped develop the drive and then they keep sniping at each other and arguing about the ridiculous space-redneck horrors that Mayweather is pulling on Trip's perfect shiny new engine.

and then one day the engine is overheating and they're arguing about how to fix it and it's so hot and they take off their shirts and they're sweating and the arguing is getting so passionate and

Sir Lemming posted:

Hooray, we finally got to "Cause and Effect" in our TNG watching, and it's still a perfect episode! A masterpiece of both writing and directing.

It's also really cool how almost every repeated scene uses different shots even though in many cases it's the same take, I think, since the line readings sound identical, except when they aren't supposed to. And the short length of the loop, plus how quickly the catastrophe happens, helps us not to be frustrated with the characters for not figuring out what's going on and making better choices.

Cause and Effect is probably one of the best time loop stories I've ever seen. It was before the concept was cliche, yet it manages to avoid a lot of the groan-inducing tropes (such as the first loop, like you mentioned). It starts in media res, to an extent, which means that the clues they use to solve the time loop are present from the audience's beginning. The thing with the different cameras was intentional for that exact reason: to prevent audience boredom. The "cause" as it were is easy enough to understand (we exploded right next to a time portal) that even people who aren't interested in sci fi can understand and enjoy the episode.
