i would say tom brady is understood intimately well in a way that jordan never will be, mostly as a product of having been famous in the internet era; i would also say that he did not distinguish himself as the greatest of his era in the same way that jordan did unless you really really love rings (in what is the most or second most team oriented sport of the big 4) which is not to say that tom brady isnt a top 5 all time qb or one of the greatest to ever do it, but hes not really the monolith that mj is or even close MourningView posted:ok so yeah they really have no idea why the Jordan one worked lol barry bonds would be way more interesting than jeter

I would watch a 5 part documentary on Bonds. I feel like only one episode of The Last Dance really captured how absolutely huge of a star Jordan was. Not just in the NBA but just in worldwide popular culture. Ive seen nothing like it in my lifetime. And no other athlete would likely deserve such a treatment. Youd need an athlete with a hook beyond their greatness (this is how Bonds would work). Brady is just boring and good. Same with Jeter. (They both played equally good on defense though)

Ronaldo vs Messi would be a good one, mainly because Messi seems to have been born talented, while Ronaldo arrived at Man United with a hefty price tag as a speedy winger with skills but not much else, and left as a complete centre forward and probably the best player in the world if Messi wasn't around

NBA players have a larger cultural impact almost entirely because of shoe & apparel marketing. Basketball is unique in that the shoes you wear while playing it can be worn while doing other stuff, which isn't the case for baseball, every type of football, hockey or cricket. Most people on the planet buy sneakers and he was the most valuable sneaker-endorser as American corporations ramped up to their peak of exporting cultural and consumer products around the world. It has an even bigger impact because other American cultural products like film, television and pop music are super materialistic, so the sneaker marketing (and by extension the individuals' cultural impact) gets signal boosted through those, too. I think Tom Brady's (smaller) cultural reach might be more the result of being married to a very famous supermodel and doing a bunch of ads for rich-guy consumer products like watches and luxury cars or whatever. I think there's a decent chance that a middle-class Asian person has heard of Brady if you asked them, but not Peyton Manning.
