Wait, what does that mean, Colbert isn't sure he'll return? They can't just stop the show, can they? I assume that means 'until they can return to the studio'? Although I'd completely understand wanting to, holy poo poo; the news even over the past 4 years has been absolute garbage. Meanwhile/Quarantinewhile segments are gold, if only for the fact that they're not Trump related. Don't get me wrong, Colbert (and Seth) makes excellent points and jokes about the current administration, but jesus, I wouldn't be anywhere near mentally healthy enough to still be doing it, practically every day, while the news just seems to get worse.

At the end of last night’s show, he thanked his staff for eight weeks of home shows, said we’ll be off next week, and that he’ll “see you soon.” It definitely had vibes of, “the home shows have been fun. We’ll see you when we see you.” Hopefully I’m reading too much into it. I like ‘em too.

I like his show a lot, but of all the late night talk show hosts whose shows I occasionally watch, his has suffered the most from being done without an audience. And, he's been slowest to adapt to the new format. Everyone's show was awkward at first, what with all the unnecessary pausing for laughter that didn't exist to die down.. But somehow, it's more glaring with Colbert. It's impossible not to notice. And as recently as last week, he was still pausing after more than half of his zingers. With an audience, that's necessary, because they're laughing. And if the joke bombs and they don't laugh, then you make that the joke, and then you get laughter. Letterman was a master when it came to dealing with jokes that bomb. Conan's not too bad at it. But pausing after every other joke when you're sitting in your den, talking to a camera? It's just weird. And he was the only one I saw who didn't get it until maybe some time late last week. It's been bad enough that I have maybe watched 1 out of every 4 shows he's done lately. I love Colbert's show, but it's difficult to watch when he's doing it from home. He needs a crowd.

Oddly, you would expect Colbert to adapt to this situation more easily than the rest, since he has always been more of a sketch comedy guy and stand-up monologues were his weakest aspect. I'm not sure why he's trying so hard to stick to that format given the circumstances.

Nah, Colbert is more comfortable in front of a live audience, to the point where he still seems to be making the show for them instead of the viewers at home.

I absolutely love Seth's show, but I think he has to cut down acting out his examples by at least half. "That's like coming home late and your wife asking you where you were and not having a good answer..." and then he acts it out, which normally goes on way too long. Funny but could stand to be shorter. If he did that half the time, I think it'd be fine. Rupert Buttermilk fucked around with this message at 13:01 on May 23, 2020 |

It was fantastic.

I get that it must be nice for the live audience and as such to Colbert, but as a viewer I find it kind of annoying when Colbert gives them so much freedom to hoot and holler and grind the show to a halt for a 10 second cheer session after every joke or mention of a democrat or republican (cheers/boos, respectively.) I haven't watched much of Seth or the two Jimmys but while Conan's audience does more or less the same, Conan usually jumps in with a funny comment or turns it into a joke while John Oliver just barrels through it immediately.

Sorry, I didn’t really consider that the situation didn’t happen very often. Details! As poster above said, applied for tickets for that day online ages in advance the moment they went up. I think there was a twitter bot for heads up and I knew we’d be free that particular day so I checked for all the shows that taped in Manhattan. Was psyched when Colbert came up. Date was April 8, 2013. A few days before, the guest is announced and it’s Bill Clinton. Oh gently caress, an actual president! That’s kinda cool and beats out an author of a book I’ll never read. I’m a Brit who was there on vacation so hell yeah. Go to the taping and talking to people in the room and they knew what had happened - the episode was pretaped on the weekend at an event elsewhere and was going to be aired as a half hour interview rather than a regular episode. I can’t remember at what point they officially told us this, it might’ve been Steven himself when he came out. Everything they did before hand was exactly the same as what they’d do for a normal taping with the warm up guy. It was awesome they made sure we had the exact same experience as any other audience, as I know you’re not supposed to apply for tickets more than once a... year? Something like that. But yeah, Steven comes out casual and apologizes that it wasn’t going to be a normal show but says we’ll watch the episode together and when it cuts for commercial he’ll do Q&A with the audience. Always heard that was the best part of the show anyway, so we got like... 4x as much Steven talking as himself. A rare thing then, and man even though I remember zero of the details because my memory sucks, he was just awesome to listen to talking off cuff and about his life to questions I’m sure he’d had a thousand times before. My friend who I went with hadn’t heard of him before I got the tickets, Report wasn’t big at home but he worked for a multinational company in London so his friends knew and was jealous. He said he loved the experience.

Jimmy Kimmel is indeed reruns this week. Tonight is the Stephen Curry episode from recently, but the rest appear to be studio shows, compressed from 60 to 30 minutes? Best to stick with NBC this week, the Jimmy Fallon Staff Favorites will be the best bits from both Tonight and Late Night. And Day Drinking Week continues on Seth.

A quick note: Jimmy Kimmel did have episodes last week, so for the sake of record-keeping, I have edited last week’s schedule post. You can sleep soundly tonight with this knowledge Both episodes on Monday were reruns. Usually, Fridays are reruns. Last week, with Monday being Memorial Day, the show was off Monday but new the rest of the week, including Friday. So maybe tomorrow will be new?

No new Kimmel tonight, but there is a new Colbert Friday - Rep. Karen Bass, Judd Apatow, Grace Potter, Jackson Browne, Marcus King, and Lucius Also, tonight was supposed to be a new Fallon, but it is now a repeat. Speaking of Colbert, last night we finally saw Brian Wilson, who was originally scheduled for Monday. And, uh, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lKCGZ-duCjI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MviBdm30cRQ I’ve long held that Brian Wilson’s 1976 appearance on SNL was the worst Brian Wilson performance. Ever since the protests have started he's repeated the fact that the police are the ones causing the violence, the protests are peaceful and beneficial, the policing system in this country is racist and broken, and never once done that lovely "but also I must condemn riots/looters/people who get too angry" bullshit that many liberals think they have to hit to stay "neutral". Yesterday's clip about defunding the police came from the perspective of "if you're a democrat who is trying to workshop a new slogan for police reform, shut the gently caress up and step back" and didn't try to explain what activists and organizers "are really trying to say", he just used clips of them saying what they want (to take money away from the police) and why they want it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YV5srZTCX9k this clip is particularly good, but all of his "A Closer Look"s since the protests have started are worth watching. He's still not the funniest host, and I think he finds his Trump voice funnier than it really is, but there are some good jokes in there too, particularly at Fucker Carlson's expense. edit: also you should watch this, it's Amber Ruffin (holy poo poo she was the first black woman to write for a late night network talk show in 20-loving-14) telling stories of her encounters with the police over her life, it's really good and her personal stories provide a good counterbalance to Seth talking at a distant overview level: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8o6OEyfuJU8 DC Murderverse fucked around with this message at 06:25 on Jun 12, 2020 |
