Hehe If anybody doesn't know, it was 40 years old and parked at Victorville; a 747-200 is a very old plane. Christopher Nolan is known for doing practical (not CGI) special effects. If they rip the wings off and a bunch of fuel doesn't come out I'm gonna be pissed though.

I think a rumor got started that we were going to stop providing water and over a few hours a riot built up in that whole part of the city. At first it was just the women and their kids yelling stuff at us in Somali, and we sent people out to talk to them and calm them, but more and more people kept showing up until the main 4 lane street we were on was packed full as well as all the side streets as far as could be seen, stuff was being thrown at us (Somali's liked to fling stones from slings made of light rope), people were pressed against the gates and etc... easily 10's of thousands of people. I was the gunner on an M2 (.50 cal) at one end of the street behind a concrete wall, in a sandbagged tower about 20 feet up. There was another .50 about 200 yds down in another tower, we had the whole street in our field of fire. There were also a few dozen other Marines with small arms on the walls and in the facility, there was probably only 60 of us total some of them just operators for the desal plant? Like, this could have been a MASSIVE, HUGE international issue. Either Marines and civilians killed by a mob or a mob of civilians killed by Marines. The Tarawa sent 3 or 4 AV-8Bs, (when things were starting to seem pretty much like, 'here we go') which dove in to below roof top level. My recollection is that I was about even with their bellies at their lowest point. They basically blasted the crowd with noise and exhaust and fast moving large aircraft just over everyone's heads. It was massively loud and intimidating, the whole crowd dispersed, in moments the street was just empty. Anyway, that's my story about almost being part of a huge international incident/atrocity. You see to the left of the red symbology that’s building comprised of two north/south-ish structures connected by a little walkway? That’s an airman’s dorm. Now note how close that was to the flight line.  Ask me how I slept during B-1’s operating out of Guam for deployment. Not good.

That's amazing. Thanks for sharing! I had no idea AV-8Bs were deployed there. Now I have an alternate movie imaging of Blackhawk Down in my head. (That movie was the last thing I watched in hotel before being bused to Kapooka for basic then Aircraft Tech as a bushy eyed 18yo). ...with a CD-R of the A-10 Thunderbolt blueprints that was scanned and leaked by A-10.org back in the day...Cos I dreamed of working on them Bombardier Gow informed we dont have A-10s in Aus. I informed that even if we did - he couldn't shoot them down (he was AA) - brave recruit move! A LOT of PT ensued.

Maybe that was the part that led him to decide to tackle the Rockies at night while exhausted in an unfamiliar aircraft. Edit: Makes me wonder how many people out there are just saying "gently caress the FAA" and flying on a few hours of student time. I think I read in this thread that ramp checks basically don't exist if you stick to less-busy untowered airports? They also appear to have a mooring line behind the copilot's seat... perhaps an escape rope?    I was intrigued to notice there doesn't appear to be a passenger entry door on it. None of the volunteers who were there had noticed that or could explain it. I guess they just used the big cargo hatch thing on the main deck as an entrance for the crew too?

Yea that’s a rope to hang out the side to escape from. Ours was kept in a little compartment above the eyebrow window. We were told to kick off the pitot tubes on the way down

About 15 years ago I was on the I90 heading into Rapid City SD and heard an ungodly rumble which made the Mrs sleeping in the backseat go bolt upright thinking something was horribly wrong. I started rubbernecking immediately and saw a couple of B1s flying around, not even really all that close but absolutely loud as gently caress. I agree, probably the loudest aircraft I've ever heard.
