The Nazi-era song scandal involving German crooner Heino

quote:

Song of allegiance glorified by the SS

Tabloid Bild published some of the lyrics from Heino's album that was released in 1981, saying they make one "shudder." In the song, "The God who made iron grow," the lyrics are written in antiquated German: "Today, man by man, we want to redden the iron with blood, with the blood of executioners and servants, Oh sweet day of revenge! That sounds good to all Germans, this is the big thing."

And in the 1814 song, glorified by the SS as a "song of allegiance," called "Wenn alle untreu werden" (When all become unfaithful), the lyrics rave about the "holy German empire."

so apparently not a new thing for him

Doubtful. They're pretty good dudes, and also all drat near 60 years old. Not exactly the type of person who still tries to be "edgy"

quote:

The band wrote the song "Links 2-3-4" (Links being German for "left") as a riposte to early claims that the band were neo-Nazis, and to affirm that they reside on the left side of the political spectrum. In a 2011 interview with Rolling Stone, when asked about Nazi accusations, Lindemann stated "We come from the East and we have grown up as socialists. We used to be either punks or Goths – we hate Nazis! And then, such a far-fetched accusation. We are doing exactly the same thing today, but no one in America or in Mexico would even get the idea to come up with something like that. This only happens in Germany. Our reply to this animosity was, "Links 2-3-4", and with that, we had made it clear where we stand politically."[110] Regarding the song, Kruspe said: "'My heart beats on the left, two, three, four'. It's simple. If you want to put us in a political category, we're on the left side, and that's the reason we made the song".[111] The song's title refers to the refrain of the German Communist Party song Einheitsfrontlied, written by Bertholt Brecht: "Drum links, zwei, drei! Drum links, zwei, drei! / Wo dein Platz, Genosse ist! / Reih dich ein, in die Arbeitereinheitsfront / Weil du auch ein Arbeiter bist".[112] (Then left, two, three! Then left, two, three! / Here's the place, Comrade, for you! / So fall in with the Workers’ United Front / For you are a worker too.) Another key lyric expressing the band's allegiance to the left paraphrases the titles of newspaper columns published side by side for several years in the German newspaper Bild: "Mein Herz schlägt links" ("My heart beats on the left") by The Left Party co-chair and former Social Democratic Party of Germany chair Oskar Lafontaine, and "Mein Herz schlägt auf dem rechten Fleck" ("My heart beats in the right place") by Peter Gauweiler of the conservative Christian Social Union.[113] Lorenz stated that the song was created to show the band could write a harsh, evil, military-sounding song without being Nazis.[114]

The band also wrote the song "Amerika" as a critique of the worldwide cultural and political imperialism of the United States. In their book Envisioning Social Justice in Contemporary German Culture, Jill E. Twark and Axel Hildebrandt found that the song's text and most of its video's images point toward a critique of America's cultural imperialism, political propaganda, and self-assumed role as global police force. The song responds critically to the US invasion of Iraq in 2003. They also found that another song of theirs that is critical of the United States is "Mein Land", believing that it critiques American racism and nationalism.[109]

During the Eastern European leg of their Europe Stadium Tour, the band showed support for the LGBTQ community on several occasions. At a concert in Chorzów on 24 July 2019, drummer Christoph Schneider surfed the crowd in a rubber boat, holding a rainbow flag. At their concert in Moscow five days later, guitarists Kruspe and Landers kissed onstage, while they embraced each other during a concert in Saint Petersburg on 2 August. The band's support for gay rights was met with criticism in Russia. Vitaly Milonov, a member of the State Duma called the band "idiots" and said: "If they think it possible to behave in such a way, they should also consider it possible to keep this garbage away from us."[115]

I guess I don't consider them "edgy" because that word has such a poo poo implication. I hear it and immediately think of lovely teens who do insane poo poo just to do it with no thought behind their actions. Rammstein is like, the "chaotic good" of edgy.

As I said, I don't disagree with you in general and I love them writing "Links 2-3-4" for the reasons you listed, rather than being coy and cashing in on right-wing followers.

Rammstein's new album Liebe ist für alle da was released earlier this month, but a press release has gone out informing us that the band will soon be releasing a special edition of the record. It comes in a metal case and includes five B-sides, as well as six dildos, each of which correspond to a member of the band. Just to ensure these dildos are put to good use, the box set also includes a bottle of lube and industrial-strength handcuffs.

The dueling outrage over that video was hilarious. In one corner you had people going :ohdear: about the bit where they’re dressed in concentration camp uniforms and debating the appropriateness of that.

In the other you had shitheads mad that the allegorical personification of Germany was a black woman.

Not sure what this nazi singer guy situation is all about though.

It's not like Heino sang racist songs. He sang some old German folk songs, some of which were also used by the Nazis. Also the first verse of the German anthem, which isn't really more nationalist or aggressive than many other national anthems, but still banned. I guess the point is, he didn't sing for Neo-Nazis, and isn't one, he just didn't care about the history of his songs or who would like them for what reason. And after being ridiculed for decades for singing boring old crap for senile retirees, some people started ironically liking him. I imagine Rammstein had a talk with him about all of that.

Anyway, his album covers are something else. Especially before he discovered how dark sunglasses helped hide his Graves' disease.

If you save some of it, you can use it to make caccio e pepe, where you cook the pasta in just enough water to hydrate the noodles without having to strain. They should be super starchy, which makes it creamy without having to use actual cream. Great dish for lactose intolerant people.

Here are six ways it can benefit your home.

1. Watering your plants and flowers
Water which pasta has been cooked in is full of starch, which is often rich in minerals and vitamins.
That content makes it helpful for growing plants and flowers, so use it to water the garden.

2. Making your own pesto sauce
Most people can’t dive into a bowl of pasta without a spoonful of pesto.
The remaining pasta water can help you make it — ensure it’s kept warm and it’ll act as a bonding agent.

3. Making homemade pizza dough and bread
As the water retains some of the flavours and starch from the pasta, it’ll give your homemade pizza dough, or bread, a new and unique taste.
Similarly, use it to make broths or soups and you’ll get an extra flavour punch. It’s good for boiling vegetables in too.

4. Washing your dirty dishes
You might think using pasta water to wash dishes would leave them filmy, but the starch actually dissolves grime and acts as a natural cleaning agent.
All you need to do is leave dishes soaking in it for a bit first.

5. Soaking your sore feet
If you have sore feet at the end of a long hard day then this novel treatment might just be the one for you.
All you have to do is warm up your spaghetti water to a comfortable temperature and pop your feet in.
The heat combined with the minerals will soothe aches and pains.

6. As a replacement for shampoo
If your hair lacks shine or looks flat then soaking it in the water for 10 minutes could help.
After that shampoo as normal and you’ll be amazed at the gleam you get.
This isn’t the only cooking tip to sweep the web in recent months.
