That's kinda how it was in the 90s to the early 2000s. We went from DS9 to Voyager to Enterprise.

Who could have guessed that they'd come back almost 20 years later to make something worse than Enterprise.

Personally I blame everybody else for DS9 not being popular enough to justify it, I didn't watch Star Trek when it was on the air, but I *would have* been a fan if I had.

Shooting on film, converting it all to tape, and doing the final edit from the taped footage is the dumbest process. I get it, it streamlined editing for shows that needed a fast turnover, and editing film was far more laborious and costly. And shows were only expected to ever be seen on low res televisions anyway, so sure why not? But because of it being so shortsighted, it pretty much hosed a lot of shows from ever seeing the light of day in their original 35mm quality due to the insane cost to scan the film and re-edit everything, if the film still exists at all. The first show to ever use that process was the 80's Twilight Zone revival, and they just tossed out the film reels after they converted to tape for editing, so it will always look like rear end. So stupid.

For pretty much any space show in the late 80s/90s that process was integral to them being able to do as many special effects shots as they did.

it is in fact not the dumbest process.

that would be bbc's policy to wipe and re-use videotape masters and old footage in the archives for programs that had already been broadcast. a lot of early doctor who episodes are outright missing, and some have only been hobbled together from random sources (transfers to film, broadcasters from other countries, people at home who just happened to record the episode when it aired).

I guess back then it was just unfathomable that people would want to see these things again in the future. there was such a culture of showing tv once (often just broadcast live) and that's it, it's like a play, once it's done it's over and you move on to something else.

either no one considered the future, or didn't care to consider the future, that we are in where we have home video in different formats, super high quality 4k media accessible to everyone, on demand streaming for shows going back decades, etc.

Hypothetically, if they decided to finish everything on film, the extra cost would have had to come from other places in production, leading to far less ambitious shows. Even then, the effects would have been finished at 80s-90s TV picture quality, meaning at best we would have really sharp picture with crappy effects and/or blurrier shots every time they had to composite the image like in TOS.

I think it is much more likely that they would have chosen to shoot on tape to begin with rather than go through that, and then it would look even worse than it does now.

Picard wasn't even tight with Data like that on the show. He was closer to Worf because he got deeply involved in Klingon politics. But whoever was in charge of the movies and this dumb rear end show thought it was all about the Picard/Data relationship.

It was Patrick Stewart's idea because he is dumb. Spiner just went along with it. Patrick Stewart is the Eric Harris to Brent Spiner's Dylan Klebold.

Picard and Data were always the fan favourites, and whoever wrote Nemesis decided that it should have a "buddy-cop" formula, which is why 95% of the screen time is dedicated to just them. Also whoever wrote Picard decided that Nemesis was the only TNG worth watching, and pulled heavily from that, which is why we have the Picard & Data lovefest.

Make Picard gay you cowards!

Picard and Data ARE bestest buds in 3 of the 4 TNG movies. You can poo poo on this show for nearly endless reasons but Picard’s relationship with Data was already misinterpreted over two decades ago by dudes who had way less of an excuse to do so.

:agreed:

They've made the writing much more stupid, but have increased the technobabble tenfold in an attempt to try and sound smart. The overblown technobabble in later seasons of Voyager (which was getting out of control) was nothing compared to some of the poo poo they were pulling in Disco., and I'm not even talking about the spore drive itself, but the millions of other things surrounding is (Doctor back from the dead) it and the time-travelling stuff (did anyone else just tune out 2 minutes into Burnham and Spock's climactic 15 minute discussion during the season climax?).

The DS9 technobabble is quite plausible when it comes to O’Brien doing stuff with computers. The explanations for people being able to recover deleted files or hack the whatever subprocess is good enough that you can tell someone who could use a computer was involved in writing it. Lots of talk about log files, encryption, etc

The Picard technobabble is appalling and can be summed up as “complete magic”. Yeah we have a machine that can show exactly what happened in a room. How? It’s because of mysterion particles or whatever, gently caress you
