It's possible for certain characters to die while holding the line depending on how many of your squadmates have survived up to that point and whether or not they're loyal to you. For that section, everybody has a base point value that is then averaged out among everyone who is still alive, with their loyalty being worth another point. Jack is one of the lightest characters (3 iirc) on the team, so she'll be one of the first to die besides Mordin if she's unloyal, or you sent Mordin back with the crew.

Nowadays with the DLC characters like Zaeed and Kasumi averaged in it's basically impossible to get anyone killed on that section if they're loyal.

I bet the real way to do this is simpler, but if anything was missing from this process sometimes my horse would just stop once I let go

In my attempt to make a run where the maximum number of companions died and Shepard still lived, I sabotaged everyone's loyalty mission except, I think, Jacob. This way Miranda would die after the final battle if I took her in. It also meant that when it came time for the Hold the Line segement, Shepard gave his speech with Miranda and Jacob standing beside him to a crowd of...Zaeed. Just Zaeed, pissed that I hosed up his revenge. Zaeed turned to face the onslaught on his own while Shepard floated away to face the Human Reaper Baby.

And Zaeed loving lived.

Mass Effect 3's ending was bad enough that it retroactively made me not care about anything that happened in the trilogy, including whoever the hell I took to do that mission and whether they lived or not.

I'm still annoyed that Mass Effect 3 could have ended in a perfectly fine way with just a couple tweaks. The game could have ended shortly before the space boy and his three colored choices, with Shepard dying in a dramatic last stand. Then you could do something like Fallout and make a bunch of ending slideshows with voiceovers, detailing the specific way out that your party members and the galactic forces end up pulling together and defeating the Reapers based on the players' decisions. If you really messed up and got a bunch of your party members killed, or were a huge douchebag or whatever, the Reapers could win.

The whole game seemed to lack effort, though. I remember Tali's incredible face reveal, where you get to find out that Tali actually looks exactly like a lightly photoshopped stock photo model.

Nobody died for me when I did the suicide mission and Miranda is hardest to kill for the simple fact the devs liked her the most and spent the most time on her.

I dunno, at the time I felt I made a good call. Yes she was my right-hand girl, but I'm not the one she'd be leading into combat. The game had just made a big deal about the sheer animosity and distrust towards her from the rest of the team, so when making my decision, with so much at stake, and not knowing what's going to happen, I thought it prudent to put someone else in charge (who I viewed as capable) as I didn't want to risk Miranda's authority being challenged in case the team ran into trouble.

Maybe my real mistake was underestimating my team's professionalism.

But anyway I do love the suicide mission and though yeah I'm still harboring some resentment about how it shook out in my case I also kind of like that I didn't manage to save everyone. At the time I was disappointed it was Tali and Legion who died cause I was interested in seeing how that plot would turn out in ME3 but I never ended up playing ME3 cause it never came to Steam. I still have my save files, just in case, but by now I remember very little of Mass Effect so it doesn't even matter.

Bloodborne's faster paced combat was balanced around being able to regain health through the rallying system though, which DS3 lacks in comparison. Not to mention parrying in Bloodborne having a more generous window. In general Bloodborne is a game that was built specifically to suit a faster pace of combat, while DS3 had the faster pace grafted on to an already existing combat system that it doesn't suit nearly as well.

This isn't really too much of problem up until Irithyll, but from there it starts to get frustrating.

I found it a problem right away personally. It didn't stop me from playing, but the combat almost immediately felt like it was moving way too fast for its own good. It made it feel very clunky. Dark Souls combat has always been somewhat clunky if you broke it down, but it fit the slow and deliberate pacing. DS3 just tried to push dark souls combat further than it realistically could go.

This kinda thing is fairly common in sequels I feel but I can't actually think of a good example of a sequel pushing the original's system too far except Dark Souls 2 funnily enough, which wanted you to fight groups far more than its actual combat system itself wanted. It's not that you can't make it work, but it gives off a very "this system wasn't designed for this" feel.

Hotline Miami 2 It's one of the most bungled sequels in my eyes. They changed the way the storyline works so you have specific characters for missions, so you have almost no choice in gameplay. The first game allowed you to do any mission with any mask you'd unlocked, which opened up a lot of subtle different venues.

Also, like you said, the gigantic open spaces made it so you got sniped by things off screen, so instead of being fast frantic gameplay you instead snuck from cover to cover until you mercifully were able to see the wall to know that nobody was going to shoot you over there.

I actually like FLUDD, but thought it would be much more at home in a side game than the main entry for the console. That would've helped the level design go down easier too, I thought a lot of the main areas just felt kinda sprawling.

I had that with legion. Turns out there’s a combat score for the part where they’re all holding the line. If you send off Drax to cover someone it’s a huge hit and usually kills someone.

The post-game content added to Hollow Knight only appeals to masochists who love 40-round boss-rushes with no checkpoints as opposed to the majority of players who came for the cute bug metroidvania.

If it was a separate mode, like time attack in the Ys games, It would have been better as it wouldn't gate new content to the less-skilled payers unable to beat Capra demon with a blindfold.

Yeah Mordin is the character that is easiest to have die if you're trying to do everything right but gently caress up near the end.

He's got a surprisingly low score for the Hold the Line task and is also the first character lost if that score is insufficient. The easiest way to keep him alive is have him in your squad or have him escort the rest of the crew back, since that keeps him out of the fight where he can die.

The escort thing is the part that hosed me up. I got the impression that you should send someone tough back with the people because they, you know, would need protection. Not that you should send the weakest member.

It’s the only part of the suicide mission that’s not super transparent. The rest is sending a hacker to hack stuff (not that it stopped people from sending Thane since it’s in vents) or a biotic to do biotic stuff.

Some of the suicide mission really could've used some better signposting for why certain bad choices were actually bad; while I don't necessarily disagree with all the choices for good and bad agents for every role when I actually looked at the list, there's a few that just feel... kinda arbitrary without the game actually telling you why.

Zaeed's one of them. Basically all of his incidental dialog is him talking about being the only survivor of some team or another, but the game never really points out that you basically just became part of the running gag. The one that got me was that sending Samara as a fire team leader is a bad choice; in retrospect that does make sense, as she was always a lone agent, but the game never really says that's what's going on.

I actually think it's a little too easy for everyone to survive the suicide mission. Once you understand how it works, it mostly boils down to "did you upgrade the ship and do the loyalty quests y/n" regardless of outcome which, if you're playing the video game Mass Effect 2, why wouldn't you do either of those things. I think it would have been more interesting if you couldn't just Paragon/Renegade your way out of the difficult speech checks and really did have to side with one of Miranda/Jack and Tali/Legion for their loyalty. I also wish that more loyalty missions were possible to fail, since most of the time you can completely defy that character's wishes and they'll still come around on Shepard. Then you'd really have to be careful selecting roles for the Collector Base.

I rolled my eyes so hard at the "heaven/angels are super-aliens and they're the REAL bad guys." Not only does it poo poo on the existing story and mythos, but it's just lame seeing yet another developer who thinks they're edgy.

Like, you know what would actually be edgy at this point? Having any representation of religion that's actually true to the beliefs of the followers. Hell, just have a character who is devout without
a) making that their only trait
b) making them have to face some gruesome demise or poetic justice or whatever
c) find out that all their beliefs are wrong nooooooooo

I'm just saying, it's not clever or edgy at this point to say "God it's real but he's evil." Try something new.
