Was it this thread where someone was trying to sell us on Midnight Gospel? Because I've gone and watched more of it at their suggestion and the more I see of it the more revolted I am by it. It's possibly the most essentially Millennial piece of art I've ever seen and it would make me sad for my generation if it weren't so completely exhausting to watch

It was kind of jaw-dropping listening to the premium ep and hearing a group of people who are usually pretty savvy about media and the way that capital manipulates public opinion just uncritically talking about how animal rights and environmentalism activists are super annoying completely at face value.

I'm like half convinced that they made the show animated just to avoid the criticisms that should come from a show that is mostly conversations and Buddhism and Hinduism being done by stoned white guys who look like this and describe themselves as "futurist anti-gurus"

Nothing millennial has that kind of meandering nonsense. Dude’s a painfully aging genXer trying desperately to fill the vacuousness of his generation’s beliefs by miming the perceived enlightenment of the hippie boomers who preceded him and stuffing that into a millennial cartoon shell

It's definitely got a Millennial aesthetic. The whole thing looks like some mixture of rubbery early 90s Nickelodeon animation with the day-glo color palette that I associate with my childhood pencil boxes and Lisa Frank Trapper Keepers and poo poo like that.

I remember it used to be a joke in every cartoon for a while to make fun of low budget shows like Speed Racer that have four frames of animation, and then this show, which given the kind of acid patina should have superfluid liquid animation, but is instead super chunky and jerky and exhausting to watch, like there's a lot of visual information getting lost somewhere in there. While it's definitely a deliberate artistic choice I can't tell what it's supposed to convey to me except that the show seems to have mistaken the idea that good art should appear effortless and has chosen to appear :effort: instead. The effect is that it looks sluggish and disorienting, on top of just being regular ugly.

Philosophically the show is crying, literally, for validation and human contact of some kind and has at the core of all of it that weeping loneliness that seems to run core to a lot of what's popular these days except executed in the stupidest possible way. It's kind of a Buddhist show in that dilettantish way that appeals to sad white guys.

Some environmentalists are annoying; mostly lib environmentalists and "apolitical" people voting for green parties because they "don't care enough to look into politics, but hiking is kind of cool so at least I'm not doing anything wrong". The latter would be OK if green parties were not centrist populist garbage parties that side with the right the first chance they get. It should be a perfectly valid venue of attack for socialists though, and I do believe we're natural allies.

Animal activists can also be annoying, but it's all relative. I don't particularly care for animals beyond doing the best we can to keep them around and make eating them safe and tasty so we rarely agree, but I don't get people who are upset at vegans or whatever. Anti-whaling actions are pretty cool, one can at least admire the conviction, but straight up anti-human Peter Singer types are problematic, possibly deranged. I wonder if anyone has tried analysing that poo poo as a black-pill phenomenon.

Socialism is hardly guilt free in this regard.

The jerky animation just comes across as cheap. Comparing it to Adventure Time, which they must have known would happen is kind of sad. It it is an artistic choice it is a dogshit one.

I'd say that Felix's "Zoomers will put every other generation into pits and execute them for their crimes of frowning at gently caress words on the apocalypse" is merely the other side of the coin of the people he whines about posting "The Kids are Alright" when they find a tiktok or whatever that has g-rated humor or is progressive in some way.
