Growing a lawn in the desert makes is a criminal waste of water imo. If you live somewhere that has rain three quarters of the year then sure why not, poo poo's going to grow whether you want it to or not. If the local soil is mostly sand and you can still see the bones of pioneers who strayed too far south on the Oregon trail, then you should definitely consider asphalt or astroturf or something that doesn't need more water per day than all the people in your neighbourhood.

Yeah its best to use natural plants / xeroscape, and a huge lawn is a chore and for most people a giant nitrogen sink / chemical fert dropping ground. Clovers are rad**. I really prefer to use mostly organic nitrogen sources that break down over time from soil bacteria, such as milorganite (Milwalkee Organic Nitrogen*) - you basically can't over apply it, it's slow-release, and you aren't dumping chemical salts in your yard. You want to encourage a good soil microbiome that naturally keeps nutrients in the soil instead of adding water-soluble nitrogen sources. Some chemical stuff is fine for supplementing minerals but grass is mostly about nitrogen. If you select a good grass for your area you can likely get away with minimal watering if you can accept dormancy, and if you are in a water-poor area doing otherwise is lovely. A good modern grass is a big part of that, you can get stuff that uses low amounts of water, survives drought, etc. Also watch what happens to the water in your yard. The default setup (at least in the US) is to dump all water out into the street/sewer as quickly as possible. You get way less utility than you could have if you design the yard to slow the flow of water so it has time to soak everywhere, or collect it in ponds / containers and redistribute it. Personally, I like mowing especially after a day sitting in a chair typing, but I can do the entire lawn in 30 minutes with a push reel mower. * it's poo poo processed into fertilizer in one of the first industrial humanure operations and you know milwalkians are packing some powerful shits. You can also check around locally, some cities have similar operations like austin's dillo dirt ** my minorly rich banker uncle bought a summer cabin place in some wooded hills near a stream and had the most beautiful lawn with clovers growing evenly throughout, not at all patchy, just wonderful looking and he was like "i dunno, i didn't do anything lawn just came like this" the 'problem' with clover is that you can't bomb the whole yard with broadleaf herbicide that kills things that aren't grass so you have to have a healthy lawn that keeps weeds out taqueso fucked around with this message at 02:51 on May 23, 2020 |

My buddy in Vegas embraced the local landscape and his instagram is awesome. Tortoises, iguanas, lizards and poo poo, crazy looking birds, cacti. It's loving rad. I have watered my lawn maybe a handful of times, and it was more just to soften the soil for aeration/seeding than anything else. Anywho, I'm gonna BBQ tomorrow. I plan on tossing 3 pork butts on the smoker because "smoke 'em if ya got 'em" right? I bought the bone in to do David Chang's Bo Ssam recipe but I'm too loving lazy to go back to the grocery store just for ginger and scallions and bok choy so gently caress it all three are going on and I'm just gonna share with coworkers. The other 2 were a 2-pack from Costco.

I have an 85 Bronco II, an 86 Bronco II, and a 2008 police interceptor that was an accidental gift. The non-hell-cars are a 1986 Fiero and a 1979 Nova. I mean the Fiero is bad because it's half metric and half not, and every bolt is different, but it's cute and stupid fast. We used to have a house bus, 2001 New Flier. Also a pain.

Old Broncos are mega cool, good condition ones have been mega expensive recently. So you're not loving in a bus anymore? Unrelated, the pork I made today, smoked it (cut into ~ 1 lb chunks) directly at 225 for 4½ hours, then put it into a pan with garlic, onions, a cup of veggie stock and a can of dry hard apple cider, cooked it at 325 for an additional 3 hours, then removed it to a separate pan for pulling. This is right before the shredding.  It was very good.

I've got a 15'x30' front yard that is maintaned by the HOA and the rest of my property is mostly hardscape. I don't like being in an HOA and I would like a bit more property but I'm pretty happy with not having to maintain a yard anymore.

I have kids and a dog, that said I mow the lawn when it needs it and occasionally choose a patch of weeds to victimise with a spray bottle. Other than that the birds love it, the kids and dog run all over it, is not a hazard. I don't give it any more mind-space than that. The patch at the front however, 8'x10' between house, borders, retaining wall etc, too small to mow, too visible to leave. It needs some decorative slab effort on it then it'll never be a problem again. I'm going to make a concerted effort to unfuck my garage/hobby space today, I've been thinking about what the real problem is (surprise, it's my brain) and I'm going to chuck everything I don't want in there into a new home or the trailer (holding space for the tip). Then I'm going to finish the three or four projects that are sat there needing small amounts of effort getting in each others way. Then I'm going to need some way to park the two kids ride-on projects that doesn't just flat out fill the floor. Miniature 2-post lift? Wonder if I can get a scrapper to come get the S40? There's nothing of value in or on it and that's like a quarter of the total car space just sitting there.

Dad brought home a hundred friggin pounds of the stuff, and I have no idea what he's going to do with it all other than fill up his freezer for the next year and a half. How weird am I if I reaaaally like mowing grass? I used to do that for summers, and still offer up to mow my friends lawns. I've mowed grass in snow and thunder storms too, and during the last months I started doing stripes and forms on the the lawns which resulted someone bringing a vodka bottle, broken mower and pair of work mittens to one of the public places where I used to mow. Cleared out few bushes and restored grass, too. Local shop had a huge council owned part of street covered in weeds and bushes, I took one week to properly weed it out and it's still cleared and in good grass - the company also got a good bonus for doing that. I did few spots more afterwards. I also killed rare and protected trees by just hitting them too many times with my mower.

A dealership got back to me, they can't really offer much more information until Monday but apparently there are no manual Hakone Edition 86s in Canada atm, I very well could be the first person interested in one. A few other dealerships have told me to pound salt.

I’ll probably do that on Monday, today I spent most of the day redoing more goddamn fencing at the house and fighting juniper bushes infested with poison oak, and tomorrow I’m going to finish building a fence at my parents’ house.
