Hard-line conservatives have convinced themselves that any deaths were inevitable anyway and that their family members and friends aren't really dying of coronavirus and they'll resist more isolation no matter what. The media will always give them disproportionate screen time, because that creates a more interesting story, skewing the narrative against taking reasonable precautions.

A lot of people understand that the pandemic never ended but millions more are being misinformed by either the media or Trump. We could literally hit 1M deaths in the US this year and half of the country will either pretend it didn't happen or act like it was unavoidable anyway.

Plus the 'protestors' are the ones, you know, doing stuff. Even when it's just 30 people having a protest, they are visibly doing something. Folks staying home and obeying orders aren't visible.

"We're gonna send him home and clean the casino. Still staying open as scheduled.". They didn't even address the people he came into contact with.

My casino is chill so far. Open only 8 hours a day, limited capacity. I show up at the last two hours of the day. I throw on a mask and gloves, walk the floor, and then kick everyone out and lock up the casino. Then I hang out in the closed casino for 10 hours; usually in the outside seating areas that no one uses. My employees complain about the isolated shifts, but I prefer not to be around people. I figure I'm gonna get it eventually. I hope it won't kill me. If it does, my wife can live well on my $500,000 life insurance policy.

Don't cry for me. I'm already dead.

Right, but now imagine everyone else hasn't had a haircut in 3 months and so the place is a hell of a lot busier than normal and isn't taking appointments and so the waiting room is really full and maybe people don't want to be all cramped in there so what happens?

Why would a state "open up" if people weren't already clamoring and chomping at the bit to do "dumb things" to make them do it? That is the whole point and reason for them to "open up" in the first place, because people want to do the things.
They've been wanting to do the things the whole time. The entire time this has been going on there's been massive pushback and efforts by people to downplay and resist quarantine, testing, treatment, and whatever other efforts you want to name.

Misguided faith in the long-term survival of mankind, I guess. I really want to believe we can make it. This is despite all evidence to the contrary. I am not a smart man, but I figure if I can do stuff, everyone else can too. It baffles me when everyone else just can't. By all metrics they should be more capable than I am.

And some of these dumb things are going to help some people not become homeless. I can almost assure you 100% that most hairdressers aren't sitting on giant nest eggs to keep them afloat for months so that they aren't evicted or their homes foreclosed on. Maybe in these "smart countries" governments have more control over banks or something, but sooner rather than later US banks will be loving people hard like straight up gonzo painal action.
