bob dobbs is dead posted:a very material proportion of jewish holidays are about times when people tried to kill the jews and failed. chief among those is purim but chanukah forex is about a miracle that happened when peeps were trying to kill some jews, etc etc It's not a concern; it's encouraged to plant trees on those holidays, but honestly mostly Tu BiShvat (New Year of the Trees). Not Jewish but lived in a Jewish neighborhood a couple of years and went to a few seders.

Every holiday for every religion should be about planting trees and cooking food. It's hard to be a dick when you're teaching your kid to plant a tree before making a cake

I don't know if there are enough Greatest and Silents to keep things like True West Magazine afloat. They also publish monthlies about WWII, Vietnam, and the Civil War.

Bird is the word. e. Content: Did you know? Boomers enjoy working at cash registers! It's true! They enjoy talking to every customer as though they came there for the conversation. Not just hi, how you doing, nice weather. Nope! It's probably going to be a somewhat lengthier topic. Maybe one they can go through juuuuust loudly enough/controversial enough to get other people in line involved. And if the person they're dealing with is another boomer? HELLO, LONG LOST BROTHER! Then when you just set your merch down and make it known you have things to do, your refusal to engage in anything beyond small-talk (a trap) will be taken as rude. So don't ever let these millenials tell you that boomers don't know how to work a low-level job. phasmid fucked around with this message at 22:43 on May 23, 2020 |

So you guys might be familiar with the old Monty Python sketch withe the old men in a game of one upmanship about who had a harder childhood. Up hill both ways but you didn't complain etc. A good chuckle about how the previous generation harps on at the younger. I just realized that the younger generation in this case are the boomers. Kind of puts a new spin on things, like the greatest gen parents trying their best to teach boomers some sense of morals or empathy while the boomers mocked them for it. I dunno, maybe the Pythons are a bad example but I'm pretty sure clease has been pretty lead brained lately.

A turkey is an abdominal cavity that sweats deliciousness into starch, that is then used to soak up more deliciousness. Turkey meat, especially the white meat, is so far down the line in things to want to eat on Thanksgiving, like, after even mashed potatoes (done right they're amazing) that it may as well be parsley.

Having just recently seen clips of Bill Cosby's performances for the first time, the man was clearly utterly deranged even at the time. I know his characters were usually acted as buffoons, but there's this weird underlying feel to his movements and actions that betray a deep and sincere insanity; it was actually kind of uncomfortable to watch, honestly. Has there ever been a blatantly weird/creepy Boomer-era TV star who did not, in fact, turn out to be a weirdo or creep? Or more to the point, why was everyone okay with these barely-concealed maniacs and pedophiles in the first place?

i got a bad feeling off cosby as a kid, never thought he was funny, and i never got why until i started to read about how he treated the black community (and, of course, his sex crimes which were an open secret for far too long). guy was complete trash in so many ways. and fresh prince was a much better show.

The Simpsons had it right in making fun of Cosby being weird and the kids having no idea why he's supposed to be funny. Also Ray Jay Johnson.

As for boomer energy sightings, on my way to the doctor the other day, I passed a lovely little bar with a number of signs like ‘if you want me to close, Governor, pay my rent’. It was advertising take out drinks and food so I don’t know if it was actually violating guidelines, but I wouldn’t be surprised. Also it baffles me that there are people walking around in NYC without masks. It is both mandated and a good idea in a city that densely populated. To be fair, I’ve seen just as many younger/middle-aged people do that as boomer-age, so I guess that flavor of dumb is universal.

Sure, it was more the presence of the signs than the actual sentiment that struck me, as I hadn’t seen them in other stores so far. They had ones with dumber lines, that was just the one that stuck in my head.

Krispy Wafer posted:Just like Boomers think literal children are Millennials, Millennials think everything older than them are Boomers. Welk and westerns are Silent/Greatest gen territory. A Boomer western would be Clint Eastwood or Kevin Kline in Silverado. Sure, some liked John Wayne, but westerns as a movie genre largely died when Boomers were in their 20's and 30's. John Wayne Westerns are like WW2 now: something boomers remember fondly about their childhood, that they were probably exposed to by their parents, telling them exaggerated stories of manliness and true American grit that they cargo-culted into the current "good old days" narrative

Cosby was a massive part of my childhood, so while I'm happy he's in prison now, I also can't erase the positive parts. Fat Albert and Picture Pages...lots of fun with Picture Pages. Lots of fun with your crayon and your...okay that sounds creepy now. purple death ray posted:John Wayne Westerns are like WW2 now: something boomers remember fondly about their childhood, that they were probably exposed to by their parents, telling them exaggerated stories of manliness and true American grit that they cargo-culted into the current "good old days" narrative I get that. It brings back memories to an America that never existed. I just don't think they actually liked watching Westerns. Blazing Saddles was made by the Silent Generation, but it was consumed by Boomers who rejected the traditional Western. Although John Wayne was the first choice for the Waco Kid, which would have been terrible. The most popular Westerns in the 80's and 90's were anti-Westerns, like Dances with Wolves and Unforgiven. That was marketed directly at Boomers. Traditional stuff like Lonesome Dove was on TV and geared to Greatest Generation. I thought Silverado was in the anti-Western category, but apparently that's a neo-Western according to film critics.
