Now those are some boiler explosions. 0:38 is particularly spectacular. I'd be tempted to fly through that too.

This poo poo still happens. We had an F-15E fly right into the loving ground practicing strafing about ten years ago. That was one of only two times I've watched JPRC kick off for real (the other was Bergdahl).

This may be apocryphal, but I’ve heard that after reviewing tapes from Operation Anaconda, a bunch of pilots were post-mission surprised/concerned to realize how many bingo and break-off alerts they’d blown through while doing CAS.

I'd bet money that for the next 7 years everyone in his unit would ask him to judge how big random spaces are and if he could fit an Apache through it.

"God drat, look how big that crack in the sidewalk is, think you can fly through it?"

"Those cars are parked pretty close together, think you can fly between em?"

Overflying the target you just obliterated, part of which has been converted into a giant debris cloud, is also not great form.

In fairness, the US was pooping out new pilots at breakneck speed during WW2, and (in a tradition that continues today) aircraft accident losses dwarfed actual combat losses: 22,948 in combat, 42,171 in accidents.

My grandfather flew B-25s. He wanted to fly B-17s but washed out because from what it sounds like he wasn't good at taildraggers (my dad said all he ever said about his B-17 training was that he landed "short of the runway")

Apache crew shows off for troops at a FOB, performs a 'return to target' maneuver, forgets the air is thinner at higher altitude and doesn't grant as much lift, pancakes into the snowpack, severs the tail, and cartwheels. Pilot and gunner survived with 'minor injuries.'

Oof that video makes me so loving angry; that battalion also ruined multiple aircraft due to widespread poor understanding of an aircraft warning system during that same rotation. Doing airshow poo poo in RC-East is about the most obvious bad decision making you can do. I flew with them out of Sharana during this tour for about a month where the parking ramp is 7300' MSL and many of your local tiny FOB/COPs/FARPs are above that. An excellent reminder that dipshit aviating continues to be a primary contributor to avoidable accidents.

I think gravity was roughly constant throughout his flying career, which makes it all the more confusing that he'd choose to load full of pax and tail stand like that.

I don't think the engines are supposed to look like that.

On May 23rd 2020 Pakistani media are reporting quoting sources within the Civil Aviation Authority, that the aircraft touched down on the runway with retracted gear during their first approach, climbed again and positioned for another approach. Ground observers reported sparks from the aircraft when it touched the ground. Later in the afternoon/evening local time Pakistani media reported scrape marks were found on the runway indicating that one engine had contacted the runway first, then some distance later the second engine, too, with both engines now scraping over the runway until the aircraft became airborne again.

On May 23rd 2020 Karachi Airport reported based on CAA inspection report that the runway inspection revealed scrape marks of the left engine start 4500 feet down the runway, the right engine scrape marks begin 5500 feet down the runway. About 6000-7000 feet past the runway threshold the scrape marks end.

On May 24th 2020 Pakistan's media quote a CAA official speaking on condition of anonymity that the aircraft made two attempts to land. During the first approach it appears the landing gear was still retracted when the aircraft neared the runway, the pilot had not indicated any anomaly or emergency, emergency services thus did not respond and did not foam the runway as would be done in case of a gear malfunction. The marks on the runway between 4500 feet and 7000 feet down the runway suggest the engines made contact with the runway surface, it is possible that the engines were damaged during that contact with the runway surface leading even to possibly fire.

On May 24th 2020 a spokesman of the airline said, the landing gear had not been (partially or fully) lowered prior to the first touch down. The crew did not call out the standard operating procedures for an anomaly and no emergency was declared. Most likely the crew was not mentally prepared for a belly landing and went around when they realized the engines were scraping the runway.

Not a pilot, but gear not being down is a unmutable constant alarm in an airbus. No loving clue what was going on there

#2 isn't ALWAYS bad...

So they gear-upped an Airbus on the nacelles, presumably crushed the poo poo out of the accessory gearboxes, dumped all the lube oil from both engines over the city as they went around, and then stalled it into the ground when the engines inevitably lost thrust because they seized up.

Lesson: When you gear-up land an airplane, keep it landed. You already hosed up, but you hosed up in a mild, survivable way. Don’t gently caress up in a spectacular, dynamic, smoking hole in the ground sort of way.

Approach asks if he's going to land on his belly when he's coming back in after losing the engines, which kinda sounds like there was maybe a gear issue to start with, beyond forgetting to put it down. Who knows though, that's just inference.

Pilot never communicates an issue with landing gear. Controller only asks after his first (engine scraping) landing attempt, presumably because he saw the sparks. CCTV footage of the plane showed it managed to deploy landing gear before it crashed.

I think it will, but I believe it throws out some kind of configuration warning in that situation.

In addition, the GPWS will give "TOO LOW-GEAR" at some point, so unless the crew had the GPWS overridden, there should have been more than one warning that the gear wasn't where it was supposed to be.
