I was going to post yesterday, but I was traveling and thought someone would beat me to it anyways. Oddly enough, this is one of the few slates I'm completely unfamiliar with, but I'm always up for more Schrader, Renoir, and Pennebaker/Hegedus. Just realized the only Schlondorff I've seen is Death of a Salesman (which is very good), though I've had Baal and The Tin Drum on my watchlist for a while. Town Bloody Hall sounds amazing.

I watched Night and Fog today. gently caress, I don’t even know how to respond to that. Anything I even try to come up, any observation or intellectualization of how it made me feel just seems so small and insignificant and weak in the face of that footage.

Second, just lol if you think you get cool points for missing out on Little Women and Once Upon a Time In Hollywood and Marriage Story. Plus I Lost My Body, Klaus, and Pain & Glory. It was a good year for shorts, too. The Oscars are a joke, but it still represented a handful of great movies.

I love that Parasite won, but a LOT of stuff was overlooked last year. Most of my top 10 of the year didn't get a nom in any category. A24 had its best year ever. Uncut Gems and Portrait of a Lady on Fire are two of the finest films in the last decade and they might as well have not existed if awards were anything to go by. Time will remember 2019 differently than official honors have.

Got my copies of Scorsese Shorts and Husbands today. I will say that watching Italianamerican for the first time while eating a freshly made bowl of sauce and pasta is like the ultimate 4-D experience.

2019 was the year of Neon for me. Portrait of a Lady on Fire (although I didn't see it until 2020, so I'm counting it as such), The Beach Bum, Parasite, Monos, and Biggest Little Farm. A24 had a lot of great great films--Uncut Gems, Midsommar, The Lighthouse, The Farewell, Climax, Waves, The Last Black Man of San Francisco, In Fabric and more--but NEON is now just as prominent on my radar as their releases. 2019. Good year for film.

I think I've rewatched it more than any other movie in the past few years. Such a treat.
