It's basically stair dancing: the game. lol mine died on zot:5 half a lung away from the orb because i never found rElec anywhere and it turns out having like, 150 hp and no rElec is basically an impossible situation

Adding more reserved spells usually isn't a huge problem unless you're trying to stack a lot of them with high failrates on a char who has very bad mp for whatever reason. This interacts really strangely with Djinni; I don't actually have MP, I reserve spells with HP. I have more than enough extra HP to reserve the spell I'm trying to cast, but it still randomly causes me to lose concentration if I try to add a spell to the stack.

Thinking about trunk and I don't know what would be worse: Lom keeping Glaciate and taunting you with a spell that you can't cast or Lom losing one of their most iconic moves. edit the best way to fight lom is with Undoing to create an Ultra Orbnado. Prove me wrong.

Though TBH glaciate isn't even the scary thing about Lom to me, its him casting tornado and throwing me across the room so I can't fight properly. And then casting glaciate.

I was in a similar position and Gooncrawl is fine, it's DCSS. The wiki might not always apply, but it's not up to date anyway and was good enough.

To me games like this (most games?) usually lose a lot of charm when I wiki all the mechanics (and thus spoil myself on mysterious items, learn strategies I’d never have thought up on my own but can’t un-learn) so no wiki is fine.

Also crawl has a lot of info built into the game itself, and doesn't have "haha you didn't look up this entire section on the wiki, you're hosed" traps as a general rule(basically the polar opposite of Nethack).

Make sure to examine enemies! The game will tell you what they're capable of, including damage range, resistances, and stat estimates.

My favorite part of looking at enemies is that it tells you exactly how well your current MR situation is looking. Enemies have more than single digit success rates? Get more MR!

Speaking of which, how do you access descriptions of learned spells now books are gone?
|
# ? May 26, 2020 09:42 |
|
If you mean spells you can memorize, press ! in the Memorise menu to cycle between memorise, describe, hide, and show. For spells you've memorised the I menu lets you see a brief overview of all spells, or their descriptions by pressing the appropriate key. ?/s lets you search in-game for spells, but you can only search their names and descriptions (not convenient for finding e.g. all Fire spells). Works on monster spells too, and tells you if a spell is in any books. Books aren't really gone, and you can use ?/ibook to find a book, and when in the book's description you can select the spell to see its description. The learnDB and the currently broken (only works for monster descriptions for now for some reason) searchable version are good resources but also everyone should hang out in IRC.

Some helpful macros for new people, and the keys I personally bind them to. Pressing ~ will open the macro menu and allow you to create/modify/delete them: 4: G\{13} If your travel to a specific place was interrupted by a monster, this macro continues that travel. Very useful when trying to travel to a shop or anywhere else that might be far away. Basically 'G' "Enter' 6: G> Travels to the nearest down staircase and takes it. p: \{24} This is a one-key-press for examine, replacing the long defunct prayer keybind for me. Basically just ctrl-x. L: \{24}!a I use this extended version of the above macro when there is a single monster on the screen that I want to examine in depth. It will not necessarily target the right monster if multiple are on screen. Just a fast way to examine a unique (I almost always play formicid and am in single tile combat in most encounters). These are non travel/combat macros I use frequently: 3: af Activates your racial ability unless rebound to another key. Again, as a frequent formicid player, I use this in every level with diggable walls. For a tengu, activates flying. Be careful using this on a vampire or any of the goon crawl species that might have unusual racial abilities that dramatically change your character like a vampire. 1. aa Your first activated god ability. Worshipping okawaru this macro works fine but you might want to modify it to 'aaf' for something lie mahkleb. 2. ab Your second activated god ability, with the same precautions as above. s. wdQrff I use this for a launcher to shoot a particular type of ammo, with 'd' being the inventory key for the launcher and 'r' being the inventory key for the specific ammo type - these two keys can be anything. 'Qrff' works for throwable weapons. Remove the last 'f' in either macro to choose your target instead of auto aiming parthenocarpy fucked around with this message at 16:12 on May 26, 2020 |

This is a personal list and I typically play FoFi of usk, wu, or mahkleb. I haven't ascended or even started many characters that cast spells above level 3 ever since conjurers lost battlesphere. That said I save F1, F2, etc for spell macros like za.

Is there anyway to make a spell behave like a ranged weapon? Or is that what you're talking about already? I tried a few fairy dragons but found it tedious to use the starting attack spell, when I just wanted it to behave like hitting ff to throw a javelin or whatever.

That's what the za. macro will do. z for spells, a to select your first spell, . to confirm casting it. Feel free to replace "a" with whatever spell you're trying to instant cast, of course.

Use something that wont interfere with your operating system, F1-F12 if possible. Choose one of those buttons in the macro window, and type 'zaf' where z initiates a spell cast, a can be replaced with any keybound spell (a is the first spell you've memorized and often your most cast spell in the beginning) and f is optional - it will just blast the target at the nearest target. You can just use 'za' to manually target, but 'zaf' will allow you to spam away.

s and . are both "wait 1 turn", so you can use the one you're not used to using for that, lowercase p no longer has any function (it just tells you to use > to pray now) and you only want to use v a lot with polearms (V to evoke stuff in your inventory). [ shows your current worn gear but probably you just use % for the pretty menu with all that info. E is pretty useless but requires shift. Inscriptions ({ then the item you want to inscribe) are useful for things like "I don't actually want to hit things with a staff of energy" (!a). When I'm doing a lot with throwing I inscribe my stones (eventually boomerangs) with @F1 and macro my spam button to f1f (use f1. if you care more about not tossing stones into lava or blue lava than giving up the occasional pass through hit), keep my javs/large rocks in my quiver, and specifically exclude my really valuable things from being automatically quivered with =f If you are using two weapons alternately put them on item shortcut keys a and b and ' (single quote) will toggle between weapons. Use =i to swap them to a and b. =s swaps your spell shortcuts and =a swaps things on the ability menu (like invocations and breath).
