It's not s/d/s AT ALL but the dude from Within the Ruins plays in Drop F on a 7-string - C F C F A# D G. He basically had to design his gear around the tuning - low 2 strings are .100 and .085 bass strings, and the guitar has a 27.5" baritone scale.

It sounds loving brutal though https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_cw2DjcuW8

There's a point where you're just paying baritone guitar, then there's a point where you're just playing bass, then there's a point where you have to switch to oscillators and snyths to put out sub-bass frequencies you can't hear

Wow that is astonishingly corny

I would be interested in hearing how low someone can possibly get a standard guitar before it just doesn’t work anymore. Especially if it’s some nasty noise sludge drone instead of djent.

Lol if you aren't putting a p90 on a cell tower guy wire and hitting it with a hammer/violin bow

edit: can't find it but there's a photo of what I assume is a noise artist's SG that has been rigged with a single 3/4" cable. Those djent dorks also have similar "EMG mounted to a stick with one fret" things

This is the post where I get angry that I posted a wildly different metal subgenre and it isn't well-received :v:

Tune in next week when I give an example of "epic fuzz/distortion" by posting a Hives song

On-topic though I guess it depends what you mean by "doesn't work," you could probably downtune to below bass levels and still get a fairly consistent open-string note but I dunno how well fretting actual notes would work.
Then again you could probably put together a serviceable drone band that only played open notes so who knows!

Les Claypool has the whamola and that thing's been around since the early 90's at least, I've never seen a djent band use something like that (although Meshuggah might as well considering most of their songs are incredibly repetitive and not in a good drone/doom way)

Bob Log III tunes his low string pretty low. the intro on the first video is the easiest example I could find.

I chose a live video as its the best way to experience Mr. Log.

Wes Borland uses a Bass G string on his E/B string position. I kinda wish Wes was in a stoner band, he's an incredible riff machine. I am an unashamed Limp Bizkit fan for this reason alone.

an old boss of mine was playing at a festival right when Limp Bizkit were starting to get noticed. the organizer was showing Fred Durst and Wes around and introduced them to my boss (and his band), who was sitting at a table with a box of Big Cheez-Its. he offered some to Fred, who scoffed, said something lovely, and walked away. Wes waited a minute, then said, "i loving hate that guy. i'll have some Big Cheez-Its, man" and sat down and chilled for a few. boss said he was a super nice dude.

Omega Massif rules. Their other guitar player and main song writer is now in Phantom Winter, which is much more aggro but also good:

Has anyone here listened to Church of The Cosmic Skull? they don't really fit in with stoner/doom/sludge but they play at a lot of stoner festivals. I like to think they are like, the anti-doom side of metal. Hope metal if you will.

I dig their track on that Wall Redux album (they cover "The Trial") that MER released. I've listened to their latest LP a few times. They remind me of Polyphonic Spree if they had more teeth and little less hippy.

I just find it interesting that they play a lot of festivals with bands considered so much heavier. But at the same time I get it, like, they are the Rush/David Bowie/Boston style classic metal brought to new life in the modern era in the way that electric wizard brought black sabbath back to life.
