The former owners of the property was the head of the local flower club. She had paths put in, planted flowers everywhere, and and did tours for groups like the girl scouts back in the 80's. Then she got old and everything was overgrown. What I want to do is open it up again, extend the back yard, and then maintain it.

What I was thinking was that I can take out all of the small stuff on my own and leave the really big stuff to a company. There is definitely an argument to be made that I'd be better off hiring a company to do all of the work, but I really want a tractor too :). I'm also thinking that it doesn't make sense to buy something that isn't going to be up to the task.

Your budget is fine, however, sub-compact/compact tractors hold value really well. Don’t rule out spending $2-5k more for new. Your local kubota dealer probably offers a tractor package with a loader, trailer, mower, blade and a BX2380 for $17-18k new with a warranty.

That said, I personally would look for a JD 1025r or a 2 series. One thing I have noticed with kubota is they tend to be lighter in weight than competitors. That doesn’t mean they are less durable, but weight is your friend when it comes to lifting and traction.

If used is a must you can probably find tractor/loader/backhoe (TLB) for that money, backhoe is best for stump removal. However, a few hours with a cat D6 beats anything a tractor can do and is probably cheaper in the long run. Forestry mulching may be an option as well.

How big are the trees? We bought our current place (10 acres) in 2014. It hadn’t been mowed since 2003. Most of the trees were 15ft high but only 3-4” thick at the base. It was also completely overrun with multiflora rose, honeysuckle and briars 1” in diameter. I knew a tractor was a must and I wanted it to lift a round bale. I wound up with a mahindra 3616 HST and a loader, 6’ light duty bush hog, bale spears and a box blade. The mahindra is a rebadged Mitsubishi, re-badging is so common in the tractor industry it can’t even be tracked. Either way, after cutting a few trees choked out with honeysuckle vines surrounded by giant briars with my chain saw I said gently caress it and bush hogged them all. Broke a lot of shear bolts, bent the bush hog deck, had blades fly off, put a ring in the top of the deck from blade contact, but got it done. Bush hog still works. The trick was to raise it up as high as it goes and back into the tree slowly. Trees have a little more give the farther away from the base you get. The bush hog will make some terrible noise, poo poo will go flying, but the trees will die. Any stumps left rot in a couple years provided you mow the regrowth.

I will look for some before and afters.

I bought a BX2380, because I use it more as a lawn mower and diesel wheelbarrow. It's loader is...not the toughest. If I was looking to do woods/tree work, I could go with at least a small frame B series (2301/2601) or even a larger frame B (2350/2650). I honestly wish I'd gone 2301 for the stouter loader/slightly more clearance/lower revving engine/three speed hydro but it's not worth the loss from the trade.

That said, there's a few B2620 and 2920 units around me that I'd probably look at in your shoes. Budget some extra money for a third function/grapple and into the woods you go.

Thanks to this channel I really want an excavator
https://www.youtube.com/user/letsdig18 but I also want a skid steer and have no yard for either of them.
Mid size excavators seem to make short work of trees and stumps. According to the professional running that channel removing stumps is a lot easier if they're still attached to the tree since you can use the tree as leverage. That might only work with an excavator though.

So maybe rent an excavator or just pay someone to handle trees/stumps and get a piece of equipment that will handle the rest of the jobs.

Similar example:

YouTube sailing family got stuck in NZ during lockdown, and dude goes on a massive rant about how NZ’ers are “sheep lining up to slaughter” because the all the shops have added marks on the floors to help enforce social distancing and he hates giving up his freedom and the government telling him what to do is bullshit. He also thinks all our media is heavily left leaning because it’s full of praise for the government rules and the performance of the prime minister and government, and because we don’t have anything like Fox News. By conservative American standards, sure I can see how some might think our media is left, but it’s more that our media generally publishes established fact, not made up politically slanted bullshit like Fox or the rest of the Murdoch media.

Then he goes on to say that he does love NZ’s fisheries management, the best he’s seen. The cognitive dissonance amongst Republicans is strong because if you hate government rules and socialism, then how can you love a socialist fishing management programme based around everyone getting a share, along with preserving the environment, which is based on the government telling you what and where you can catch fish? Also he’s in NZ in the first place because his boat insurance company tells him he can’t be in the pacific islands during cyclone season, so an insurance company can tell you what to do but the government asking you to stand slightly further away from people is bad? We didn’t even enforce mask wearing down here!

Nice pics Tremek, looks like you guys are having fun. A 2 series is overkill for two acres unless you plan to dig it all up and move it all around a few times. But better to buy too much tractor than too little.

Equivalents that I have heard good things about:
The Kubota L series would be the equivalent model to the JD 2 series, the L3301 would get you about the same. If it were my money in this class, I would spend it on a Kubota. Reliable, good parts support, you aren't paying for the JD brand (which some people really like).
The NH Boomer series is good too. My boss has one for his hobby farm and loves it.

Staples (for example) does color printing for like $0.25 a page. You can send them jobs over the internet and then drive down and pick it up.

Color laser at home is certainly doable, but there's not a lot of reason for it. We almost never print anything in color. B&W handles nearly everything and it's dirt cheap.
