This is true, Severin has never really disappointed me. Of the various boutique labels they are probably the most consistent in terms of film quality. As much as I love Vinegar Syndrome, some of the films they release are truly awful.

All of these boutique labels that specialize in weird genre films are full of garbage. VS absolutely has some gems but a lot of that is unwatchable junk.

Severin is the label for the cool stuff I wanted to see after reading about it in Shock Cinema, stuff that you'd have to buy a mail-order catalogue to get and then wait three weeks for a lovely DVR transfer. Vinegar Syndrome is the label for porn, stuff you'd find in "1001 Grindhouse Classics!" boxed sets and the occasional oddball gem like Christmas Evil, Liquid Sky and Tammy and the T-Rex. Both have their place, I'm so glad we have weird boutique labels putting out professional, HD transfers of stuff no other label would touch.

I wish these boutique companies would find some sort of in-house format that lets their unwatchable trash be a bit more easily consumed, ala Joe Bob Briggs (without the nazism) or MST3K (without the ironic enjoyment). There's no way I'm going to blind-buy an obscure $29 Blu-ray of a film that I've never heard of and that not even hardcore cinephiles seem to like, but I'd love to watch that sort of thing with a horror host or other narrative or contextual wraparound. That would be worth paying boutique prices for and wouldn't have too much added production cost if you used the same set/performers on all your titles.

e: Like, Vinegar Syndrome should have a pickled corpse in a jar who looks like Hugh Hefner cut in every 10 minutes and make phallic puns about carrots and cucumbers or whatever if you select that menu option. I'd go broke watching that guy talk about mediocre old porn if he was half as fun as the Crypt Keeper.

While not the same, the boutiques usually offer a great set of bonus features often including some short form docs on the movie purchased.

But Severin/VS having a better choice than Joe Bob on shudder would be great since I refuse to watch JB these days.

Count Dracula's Greatest Love was featured in an episode of Elvira's Movie Macabre, so there is that.

I must have a high tolerance for junk, because I can only think of a couple instances where I've not finished a Vinegar Syndrome release, and it was out of boredom more than anything else.

EDIT:

Speaking of VS, I've noticed that a few of their releases will occasionally end up on COMET a month or so after the Blu-Ray, which always weirds me out.

I'd argue that VS has been getting a lot better about what they put out these days and you're seeing a lot more obscure things that people would actually want to watch now.

It is kind of funny that between Scream Factory, Severin, Arrow, and Vinegar Syndrome, each company has their own niche in the horror/cult community.

Count Dracula

Any other essentials/suggestions?

The Changeling is legit and I consider it one of the best haunted house movies. If they ever put Blood on Satan's Claw back up (one of their Black Friday only sales) jump on that movie. Its a great early 70's horror that has the vibes of something like Witchfinder General.

I went to his live show where he talks about rednecks in film history and it was really funny and insightful. After the show I took a picture with him for an album I have of me with comedians on Instax film. The next day I found out that he's a loving Nazi.

It's so good. The Batman Beyond set is also really good.

As far as the Joe Bob stuff, he has since distanced himself from Taki and claims that when he started writing there it was because he had no job at all and the boss there did him a solid and started paying him for articles and that he didn't know about the alt-right bent of the publication. Whether you believe that or not (I am pretty suspicious that someone as seemingly savvy as him WOULDN'T know), I chalk some of his more questionable writing up to an annoying South Park-esque "the truth is somewhere in the middle" Libertarian tendency. See also people railing against his jokes about LGBTQIA+ which amounted to "making an acronym longer is dumb because it actually further tries to narrow something that contains millions of valid possible identities" when he's long been an ardent ally. I think some of his problem is the redneck character sometimes magnifies certain interpretations of his politics which, while often dumb in that "civility politics" kind of way, aren't really alt-right in nature.

See I'd love to read where he said these things. From what I've heard about on the forums so far he's really never apologized or said that he regrets writing for them, or even that he wouldn't write for them in the future. So I haven't really heard anything straight from Joe Bob's mouth on any of this, it's just heresay that I get from posters on SA.

Of course, we're talking about a horror host here, so it's not like I need proof that he's a virulent racist to drop him. I could take him or leave him so even if he's just kinda proudly ignorant in that frustrating boomer way, I probably don't want to watch him anymore.

Yeah, my source for him quitting is literally a tweet from Darcy the Mail Girl so not exactly reliable, although it's been very recent so it may have been since January. I think he's being mispainted by some critics but that doesn't mean an accurate painting would look much better, especially the tinge of "violence is never the answer" in some of his writing when more and more it's looking like violence is about to be the only answer.

The most charitable reading I can give what Joe Bob has written about the alt-right/Neo Nazis is that he doesn’t see them as worth getting upset over. He’s looking at them as this tiny little collection of mutants whose ideas are so self-evidently wrong and outmoded that the “marketplace of ideas” should have no problem regulating them on its own. This squares with his defense of writing for Taki’s being that “magazines are a buffet, not a hospital menu” or whatever. In his mind, Nazis already lost the war and shouting them down is actually worse than giving their ideas a chance to gain traction because it’s an overreaction.

That’s all a bad way of looking at the current situation, of course, but at least it’s different than being 100 percent on the Nazis’ side. And again, this is just my interpretation of what he’s said and I could be squinting too hard to feel better about it. I’ve always been a fan of his reviews and MonsterVision and all that, so it’s been tough to see all of this.

I AM GRANDO

The horror of writing for Taki’s Magazine is in giving cover to nazis to grow their readership. It’s a “hide your true power level” platform that edges people into fascism by mixing up orthodox conservative voices like Ann Coulter with right-libertarianism and outright nazi poo poo like pieces by Richard Spencer, who used to be an editor.

Helping nazis is not good.

If he really wanted to do his "truth is in the middle" horseshit convincingly, he should be writing for an eco-terrorism zine too.

This position maybe made sense in 2015. That was a very long time ago. There's less than zero excuse now.

But that aside, I stopped watching The Last Drive-In after a couple of episodes because Darcy the Mail Girl was cartoonishly sexist and he was constantly spouting libertarian boomer dad views and I couldn't handle it. There's too many better things to give my time to.

Somewhat related, I've been thinking about this kind of thing lately. Watching a movie or show on scheduled television felt like a collective, connective thing for me. I remember watching schlock poo poo on USA Up All Night, early MST3K, a late night showing of a horror anthology series, or some reeeeally bizarre poo poo like WeirdTV that we could only pick up on a long range satellite dish, and knowing that thousands of others were watching at the same time, and I found something comforting about that. Movies and shows were big campfires that we gathered around together, even if we never met each other. There was something to that feeling that fragmented digital self-service doesn't capture. At least, not yet.
