It's worth reading his statement (EDIT: Looks like it was the following year, after he contributed to another ad). I think he sent it to Stereogum--the link is dead, but there's an extended excerpt on avclub that's pretty choice. https://news.avclub.com/of-montreals-kevin-barnes-selling-out-isnt-possible-1798212793 "In the art industry, it's extremely difficult to be successful without turning yourself into a cartoon. Even Hunter S. Thompson knew this. God knows Duchamp and Warhol knew it. Some artists are turned into cartoons and others do it themselves. I prefer to do it myself, at least then I can control how my cock is photographed." "The worst kind of person is the one who sucks the dick of the man during the daytime and then draws pictures of themselves slitting his throat at night. Jesus Christ, make up your mind!" 2007, y'all! Fake edit: found the original piece - https://www.stereogum.com/7208/of_montreal_art_brut_do_tmobile/video/

It's still just funny to me thinking "lets go to outback tonight" from the most popular of Montreal melody.

I've never listened to 1975 before apart from hearing random songs here and there but I gave there new one a listen and it's really good. That one-two punch of Don't Worry and Guys at the end was really emotional, thinking about my relationship and friends. Holding in some manly tears for sure.

New Zealand got rid of COVID and now we can go to gigs again. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8p-y6MYfLLk Saw Reb Fountain on Saturday night, and she was great. In a similar genre to Aldous Harding or Nadia Reid (in fact, here's a thing she did with Nadia for our national radio station where they each cover a song by the other), but she strays a little closer to alt-country, sometimes sounding almost like Patti Smith. Anyway, she definitely deserves your attention.

I've wondered how they would do some of these tracks live considering the complexity, and these live arrangements are just so well done even with the level of improvisation they are including. To have these totally different live mixes at this stage in their career shows a really mature sense of musicality. I cannot WAIT for album 2, I still can't believe they are not more popular from the ST. I stan high pitched 'no' synyth player. edit: whoa it is so cool to see the comments on that youtube video, people really seem to have connected to this. I hope it leads to big things. Yeah right? There's a lot of stuff in their songs that I assumed was sequenced because it's quite intricate and doesn't repeat much, but nope - just extremely well-practiced, meticulously composed weird beautiful music.

I wasn't crazy about parts of Everything Now at first, but even the worst songs on the album have grown on me over the last few years. So, I think that Reflektor and Everything now are still solid albums, but I hope they return to form with their new album that I expect to be out within the year. They spent the last two albums chasing the high of Sprawl II and trying to make dance records.

The consumerism commentary on EN just seems so... Late to the game. It's been done a million times over by now. Still there were some good songs and I heard the love show was killer if not extremely poorly attended which is a shame. I think you can take the second half of reflektor and merge it with half of EN and have a great album.
