yeah what's going on with that I figured it was the OWC 1TB ssd I have in it, but maybe it's something else. My 2010 macbook never had any problems like that and if it weren't for the retina display I think I would have been happier with the 10 year old machine at least the hackintosh runs fine

My 2015 MBP will periodically and for no particular reason hard-lock to where I have to power cycle it. Is that something a glitchy ssd would do

if there's a persistent read failure on a block that happens to have a specific file on it that only gets read occasionally maybe, usually it's the kind of thing that gets worse though you can use a utility to read the SMART data on the disk and look at the read errors/bad sector counts random hardlocks can be memory issues though, or a kext doing something dumb that doesn't trigger a kernel panic, or a kext doing something normal that causes your glitchy video chipset to lock up infernal machines fucked around with this message at 14:58 on May 31, 2020 |

im having a similar problem, i do Suspect the Kext, is there any way to see what kext it could be
|
# ? May 31, 2020 15:41 |

if it doesn't cause a kernel panic, i don't think so, in as much as you could check the minidump that the KP creates to see the memory location of the fault and figure out what triggered it, but if the system just halts you're left with trial and error unloading kexts until it doesn't halt any more at best you can look through the system log and see if there's anything that comes up consistently right before it halts and go from there

Catalina is broken, op. I have a feeling they “improved” the USB stack and now it’s very buggy. if your machine is intermittently freezing up, the first thing to try is to unplug everything from it and see if it disappears. then plug in one thing at a time until you find the offending device. hard drive errors are rarely the kind that lock up the machine. block io stack is usually pretty good at error recovery because it’s not memory mapped to the device.

idk about catalina, but i have for sure seen mojave and previous builds run into frequent intermittent halting due to read errors on the ssd/hdd not hardlocks mind you, just repeated intermittent beachball where everything stops responding for 10s to a minute every time it tries to read and fails that said, if the usb stack on catalina is so hosed as to cause that behaviour, then lmao.

After looking at the logs and Googling I assume it's this: https://mrmacintosh.com/2020-002-update-causes-some-macs-to-freeze-when-using-hw-accelerated-video/

that kind of makes sense. i have a work 2015 15" thats not having these issues but its always a release behind for various reasons the kext tweaks and usb changes made for some mildly annoying stuff for my mba 2012 but they also juggled and broke the usb sharing for ios devices when they forced it into the caching options. bit of a mix on what to blame there
