How are people setting up their sub-pallettes? I feel like I'm doing something wrong as Bouncer because I have 1-4 set up with my buffs and then the rest are techniques, and it's kind of a pain in the rear end to reach over and mash or hold 5-0 during combat while trying to move around. I know you can move the cursor thing left and right in the menu and use B to activate the ability (like how it's always done on the controller I guess) but that feels even slower and harder to manage mid-battle.

Edit: Followup question: are all techniques that are Red/Blue/Green the same element when it comes to weaknesses? The symbols on the weakness window for monsters doesn't exactly match the symbol of the technique I'm using but wasn't sure if that mattered or not as long as I match the color.

If you're using the techniques to change jet boots element, one option is to have a seperate subpallet where you just have all of your element changing techs. If you're going to be using offensive techs more often you could probably fit 1 or two onto your jet boots weapon pallet. Also, personally, I prefer having the actives on the right side of the pallet, since I'm pressing them less often than resta and such.

Also yeah all red techs are fire, blue ice, etc.

I'm not sure how I feel about this game. I love the essentially high-res version of the Dreamcasty SEGA aesthetic it has. The Dreamcast is still my favorite console of all time. I grew up a SEGA fan and I still stan them to this day. I love all the ways to play pretty princess and make your character look exactly the way you want. The combat is fun and has lots of flexibility to do it your own way. The price is certainly right. As a F2P player you don't feel like you're missing anything essential, as opposed to, say, LOTRO or SWTOR.

I tried the translated version a few years ago and found its menus and systems incredibly obtuse. I'd hoped that that was just the translation somehow, but nope. Just how it is. There isn't an inventory, there are 5 of them. And types of quests. And a dozen different currencies. You go through what passes for the story by standing at a terminal and viewing cinematics that mostly consist of character models standing still and talking in the middle of a field. For a game with so much stuff a lot of it feels shockingly low budget.

It's really hard to keep track of what you're supposed to be doing. Half the time waypoints take me back to guy who gave me the client order instead of where I'm supposed to go to fulfill it. There's no quest tracking on the HUD as far as I can tell, so you just run around a zone until the announcer from Sega Marine Fishing yells a word scramble at you like CODE EMERGENCY JOKER at you and whack things. Lots of things are being thrown at me constantly but I have no idea what they mean.

The world of it is so small, too. It's basically the size of a pre-World Monster Hunter game. There's no pretending this a second world you virtually live in.

So I dunno. It's free, and it's not like there's a surplus of good new MMOs out there right now, so I'm going to give it a while and see if it clicks.

I don't need to give a poo poo about the ten billion different badges and photon drops and crystals and FUN and whatever the hell else currencies there are at all if I don't care about cosmetics even a little right

Because the game just threw twelve different ones at me and I'm looking at vendors asking for ten thousand of them and uh no thanks, right now I'm just taking exploration missions or some quest and ignoring everything else (largely because half the time it throws me in the game without even letting me look at these daily orders or whatever those are).

It's fun to play and pretty much exactly what I want from a PSO sequel on that front but everything else is a trash fire

For the folks who don't go on Reddit. (Note, this will prevent your PSO2 game from running updates, as the launcher is what retrieves updates. I believe Arks-Layer is working on a update for PSO2 Tweaker which will bypass the default Launcher, allow updates to PSO2NA, and prevent the lag experienced in lobbies by people using the default Launcher.)

https://www.reddit.com/r/PSO2/comments/gsn90o/workaround_fix_unbearable_lobby_lag/

u/Krisan-Thyme posted:

I know many of you like myself have dealt with unbearable lag in the lobbies. It's been so bad, that the game is utterly unplayable at times, forcing players to go to the Cafe or Casino to find a bit of relief. Well fortunately I have discovered a workaround for this issue that eliminates the majority of the lag. (A little bit is unavoidable, but it will no longer hitch every few seconds like before, and when it does happen it should be very brief and resume to a playable state thereafter.)

The solution is an odd one, but trust me when I say it does work. Some steps are in order for this one, though. So sit back and get read..

Download WinAero Tweaker, this technically isn't necessary but it'll make it way easier for the less tech-savvy among you! (my note: I don't recommend downloading random tools if you can follow the steps by yourself without needing this) You can find it here: https://winaero.com/

Once WinAero is installed, scroll down to "Context Menu", and find "Take Ownership" - you want to select it and then tick the box that says "Add Take Ownership context menu to files and folders." You can always come back and turn this off later if you don't want it anymore!

Go to "C:\Program Files\ModifiableWindowsApps" and right click on "pso2_bin" and select "Take Ownership"! A command prompt will appear and it will slowly go through all of the files in this folder, granting you ownership of the PSO2 game files. This is important for what we're about to do..

Open the "pso2_bin" folder, then rename "pso2launcher.exe" to something else. I'd recommend something simple like adding a dash in front of the name, for example: "-pso2launcher.exe"

Make a copy of "pso2.exe" and rename that copy to "pso2launcher.exe"

Launch the game as you normally would, via the start menu, a pin on your taskbar, or through the shop directly. The launcher will be skipped entirely, and it will boot directly into the game, now with surprisingly less lobby lag!

Why does this work? I don't have concrete evidence yet, but I suspect it's GameGuard. The only other possible culprit could be the launcher itself. There's very few things that could be causing it, though, so give it time and we'll eventually figure out what's really going on.

Edit: Glad it's working for you guys! Here's a little followup to everything.

Q) Can I get banned for this?

A)You literally made no changes to the game whatsoever, you renamed an EXE. There's no way you can get banned for this. You're not even doing anything shady here, it's literally a simple edit on the same scale as modifying an INI file.

Q) Does this circumvent GameGuard?

A) No it does not! GameGuard is still up and running, and still prevents users from doing naughty evil little cheats. At worst this prevents GG from constantly scanning the EXE over and over again, confirming information already verified by the server.

Q) Do I really need to do the first three steps?

A) It depends on if you have permissions to modify files in those folders or not! You don't need WinAero either, you could manually set the permissions yourself via command prompt or through security properties. These steps were added for the less tech-savvy users, those who know how to do these things or are already in control of their files can just skip ahead!

Q) Is it really GameGuard at fault?

A) Possibly. Some here have speculated it is the launcher causing this, but I can't see the launcher passing any arguements that would stall the game repeatedly like what's happening in lobbies right now. On the other hand, I have seen hack shields like GG do this in other games, and it usually relates to it scanning a specific process in such a way that it brings the entire engine to a halt until it is satisfied with the information it has been provided. Who knows?

Q) Do you intend to keep investigating the issue?

A) Yes! I am very curious to see what the exact culprit is. And if it isn't GameGuard, I want to know what really is going on! I'll update you all if and when I have more to share.

dnb321 posted:

Thanks for testing. I noticed the difference is in some of the parameters assigned to it

Running from the actual launcher the game launches from C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Mutable\STRINGHERE\pso2.exe with arguments of +0xHEXSTUFF -optimize

Running with pso2.exe renamed to pso2launcher.exe runs from that same location with -win10 as the argument (which is the same argument passed to the initial launcher)

https://i.imgur.com/kvhTEM5.png

https://i.imgur.com/1VLB1Pm.png

Note: I had to check with process explorer (as admin) to find the path and it did match the other location even though task manager doesn't know about it.

If this doesn't cause any issues I can make an easy cmd file to rename/copy the processes for people to use to swap between them when updating if people want. Want to make sure there isn't some downside to it before though. Would just copy/rename the two exes. You don't need to change permissions on anything, just admin access to copy/rename the two files.

Some badges can be redeemed for weapons and in the jp version at least collecting various items was the main way of getting high-tier weapons.

Photon spheres are used when upgrading your weapons (to upgrade your bonus past +10, +20, and +30 you need to spend photon spheres).

FUN scratch cards can give you non-cosmetic items like grinders, exp boost items, etc.

Apparently downloading and running the tweaker is a good way to fight lobby lag as it launches pso2.exe with a different set of arguments than what the Launcher launches it with, that GameGuard doesn't freak out about.

Now I'm curious how many players have been bounced away and never to return from this game by day 3 (+8 years). Between the archaic quasi-MMO design and the launcher's attempts to beat up people's computers this probably couldn't have gone worse.

Both renaming the launcher exe and using the tweaker make the game run how I thought it would run for a game this old too.

Anyway, Mag is L33 and I need to bind its superpower to something. Will casually play a little here and there, but most of my friends who wanted to play all left (yes, never to return) yesterday.
