You can poo poo on him for sending pictures of his dick to a teenager. I'm talking about reaching that cycle in a mock thread where you're just finding things to nitpick about every new comic page (however unremarkable), or having people send you drive by photos of his house, or going through records of nearby police stations to laugh at funny things people with the same name as him did. If the first thing was all people focused on, there wouldn't be enough "material" to sustain a mock thread beyond the time it takes everyone to go "gently caress you Tim Buckley" a few times and in bolder fonts.

I feel like the Dobson mockthread is the ultimate example of what happens when content completely dries up. People were so desperate for posts they were going through multi-year old dA journals trying to find things to ding him for, and it ultimately ended with someone posting a video of someone at a con lamely walking up to him and pouring a bottle of water all over him like it was the greatest own in the world.

One of the Dobson threads also ended after a poster made an extended rant about Dobson being to comics what a pedophile is to children :catstare:

Whatever happened to the Dominic Deegan guy

Nuns with Guns

It's fine.
Don't worry about it.
He collaborated on a Green Lantern-ish scifi webcomic with an artist for a while. Not sure if it's still running.

He also started a sequel comic to Dominic Deegan with the main hooks of "no in-character dialog" and "full frontal nudity"

It's very, very, very boring

Moon Slayer
Jun 19, 2007

He's putting out a "sequel" comic that he advertised as having a deaf mute protagonist and so would be told without dialogue. What this actually means is that the protagonist journals a whole bunch to explain what's going on.

Also full frontal nudity.

Something similar happened with the old grognards.txt thread in Trad Games, even though it wasn't focused on one person. The tabletop RPG community online just isn't that big, and after a while it was all the same people being talked about all the time.

Reading secondary or primary sources about Everest makes it very clear, very quickly that there's a big problem with rich people paying to climb the biggest mountain in the world without any preparation or experience, that there are conflicting narratives about this (for example, the OG rich lady who's said to have brought an espresso machine up the mountain with her in In Thin Air was defended by her climb leader as being much more qualified than Krakauer made her out to be), and that capitalism, race, and class are big issues regarding the whole situation.

I'd just like to point out that her "espresso machine" was one of those little lightweight coffee pots you put on your stove.

Nepal is one of the poorest countries in asia and its landlocked status sandwiched between the two enormous countries of India and China plus its mountainous terrain means chances of economic development are poor and its doomed by geopolitical realities to end up as a sattelitte state of one of the two countries. I support any possibilty for the Nepalese to scam some money off rich first-worlders.

I mean that article does kind of make it seem like Krakauer embellished quite a bit. She had already done the rest of the Seven Summits with no issue so  could go either way IMO, unless there's a bunch of eyewitness accounts of her being as bad as it seems. Also LOL that they made a movie that made Krakauer look like a big wiener, according to the article

There was a goon, Mirthless, known for picking fights in the r/relationships mock thread that was described as "having died on so many hills that the hill made of Mirthless corpses could make a whole new hill to die on" which is a phrase I remember a lot.

The r/relationships thread is one of the few mock threads to not go off the deep end completely, probably because it just has such a steady stream of new content it doesn't run into the "out of poo poo to laugh at" phase. Also heavy moderation.

i feel like the /r/relationships thread does have kind of a hosed up streak to it, mostly based on a continued refusal to acknowledge that Reddit is actually a monstrously loving huge site (literally in the top 20 most visited sites on the entire internet) and that "the average redditor" isn't really a concept that exists. that, plus our existing animosity towards reddit, pretty much means goons respond to any given story by trying to hunt for reasons why the OP is actually a horrible monster who deserves to be slaughtered, and ignore any story they can't do that for.

i almost kind of suspect we performatively hate reddit so much because, if we had to acknowledge that it's massively, hilariously larger than us and is used by a pretty large chunk of people across the world, we'd have to acknowledge that we have all the same problems, but proportionately worse due to our smaller userbase. a hundred nazis on a site with millions of people is a little less of a problem than one nazi on a site of maybe 20,000.

We hate reddit because they got big hosting child porn. Fostering child porn communities and stanning the redditors that brought in traffic by being huge contributors to it. This is not a challenging one to work out.

Also there's the weird dissonance between people frequently and openly using stories from it to justify their position on any number of contentious real-world issues but then also acknowledging the fact that pretty much everything posted there is fiction and they're supposedly just engaging in kayfabe.
