Partial Octopus posted:I'm moving from Philly to Denver this weekend. I managed to fit all my essential belongings into my Miata. Is that a 1up bike rack? I moved cross country in a similar fashion in my old 94. Car was having bit of a hard time on a 80mph speed limit highway in Nevada, but otherwise it got me through a flood in St. George just fine on the way to southern AZ.

Yeah it's the 1up single. I decided to ship my bikes instead of taking them with me. I figured it was worth paying the $60 for shipping as opposed to having someone steal my mountain bike while I'm eating some rest stop hamburger.

I went on a handful of drives last year and had a good time, the members are mostly older but everyone I've met has been nice and it's just always fun to cruise around the mountains with a bunch of other Miatas.

I'd be down to meet up just to go for a weekend drive regardless of the club. I'd love for someone to show me where all the best roads are.

Would be happy to. Once you're settled in hit me up and we'll go drive around in the mountains.

They charge about $1k more than standard (though it does come with other goodies), which has me hesitating.

So while I was driving today a rock hit my tow hook cover and it went flying off into the sky. Do I need to bother getting a replacement part color matched or do you think I'd be safe just ordering a pre-painted one online? The car is pretty new, idk if color matching is just for older sun-bleached cars or just for paints they don't make anymore.

I’m waiting for 949 to do a NC development car so that I don’t wind up buying an NB if I ever get the track itch again. They did some stuff with the Toyobaru last year, but those cars are usually double the price of an equivalent NC.

How painful is a suspension refresh on the NC? It's either I do that myself or I go find another, newer NC (with an LSD this time) I think. Garages around me are closed or have very limited hours so I think I'd have to tackle this in my driveway.

afaik you don't have to disconnect the steering in order to fish the front sway bar out on an NC

FreelanceSocialist posted:Did you have access to a lift or just throw it on stands? Did you go with a kit? Stands. IIRC accessing the tops of the rear struts in the trunk is a little cramped. Threading the front sway bar took a while. Goodwin racing sells Konis, progress springs and bars. I hear good things about FM stage 2 but this setup had PRHT specific springs as an option. Don’t forget tor reuse the little plastic film on top of the front struts, it’s an anti-noise thing.

My NB's got a flat tire. Obviously, the only possible solution is to get a full set of wheels and new tires. I'm thinking about RPF1s, but Konig Hypergrams also look pretty cool for like eighty bucks cheaper per wheel. What's a good 15x7 wheel/tire combo for a stock NB that will see 90% street use and (hopefully, post-COVID) a little autocross? PS4S for tires?

I really like the BF Goodrich G-Force Comp-2 (not the all seasons) or Kumho Ecsta for street/auto-x. e: for 90% street I'd lean towards the BFG Comp-2 only because they behave better in the wet, in my opinion. FreelanceSocialist fucked around with this message at 02:17 on Jun 5, 2020 |

Re tire chat for street/autox use. Do you want to be competitive, have the tire that's going to allow you to win a street tire class? Get either BFG Rivals or Bridgestone RE71R's. Tradeoffs: high wear, lots of tire noise. Next step down is RS4's, they sacrifice some speed but trade that for better wear characteristics. Still lots of tire noise. Below that you've got a wide variety of options, kimho Ecstas, G-Force Comp-2, things like the firehawk Indy 500 (surprisingly a very good tire at a great price point), etc. I don't have a lot of experience with these, as I jumped into top tier tires off the bat. I run RS4's these days because the top autox tires wear too quickly (I'd be replacing every year after 10 events of 6-8 runs each, +5000km street driving) and they last even less on track. For reference, I get 2 years out of RS4's, including 6-8 track days.

I have Continental ExtremeContact Sports which come in one 15" size (205/50) that should fit your 15x7. They have good road feel, are not too noisy, have good dry and wet traction, and have a 30k mile treadlife warranty. I think the G-Force Comp-2 has better road feel than the EC Sports but also seem to have less max grip and no treadlife warranty. The Firehawk Indy 500 had worse feel but better grip than the G-Force. For wheels, I have Advanti Storm S1's which are almost as light as RPF1's but look way better in my opinion. They are flow-formed as well.

It's going to depend on your lot conditions, temperature range you typically run at, how much adjustment you can get out of the car, etc. Though, for what it's worth, E-street at Auto-X nationals 2019 results (where NB's play in stock form) every single miata entry finishing higher than 24th was running Rivals or the new Yokos.

I'm very happy with my Conti ECSs on 15*8 storms for daily general use. That offset is perfect on the NB.

Let's round out performance tire chat with quiet tire chat: I drove a vette with Michelin Pilot Super Sports for about 400mi last summer and they made my tires at the time (GMax AS-05s) seem deafening. Unfortunately those don't come in 215/45R-17. Any recommendations for my next set of (quiet) summer street tires?

I'm definitely more interested in street driving experience than pure grip. There's no way I'm going to be competitive in any autocross class, anyway.

PSS are loud? Those are my go to street tire. Balance of performance, wear, wet traction, and noise was spot on, I thought. Also note that the PSS is the third generation extreme performance tire by Michelin. They're on the Pilot Sport 4 now.

No, they're the opposite of loud. They were much quieter than the tires I had at the time.

How's the hardtop availability / options for the Miata? I'm not a convertible kind of guy, and not a fan of soft tops. Some googling give some pretty cool stuff, but hard to find good quality stuff when the "bad" stuff seems super expensive.

Sounds like you might want an NC Power Retractable Hard Top (PRHT) or maybe an ND RF unless you're dead-set on an NA/NB? The NC PRHT is great, in my opinion.

Mazda’s U.S. Sales Situation Finally Starts Coming Together, in the Middle of a Pandemic? And Because of the Miata? posted:Year-over-year, MX-5 Miata sales jumped 31 percent. With 1,102 sales, it was the first four-digit sales month for Mazda’s droptop since last July and only the fifth such 1K+ month in the last three years. Mazda averaged fewer than 700 monthly Miata sales in 2019 and hasn’t averaged more than 1,000 per month since 2007. https://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2...e-of-the-miata/ Seems the CX-30 is doing most of the heavy lifting but the fact that the miata is enjoying a sales resurgence is good news.
