My youngest sister was the result of an entirely accidental "oops I'm forty and my birth control failed" pregnancy. They were really open about that fact. Also, they kept her. My mom also spent the late 70s/early 80s volunteering for a group that did sex ed and also helped arrange abortions for Albertan women who needed them, which at the time meant flying them into Colorado. These are not contradictory facts.

A lot of people seem hung up on the cowardice angle, but that’s got nothing to do with it. White people don’t get as angry as minorities when the cops kill one of their own because the cops who kill the white people are mostly also white people, there isn’t a pattern of cops killing white people out of proportion to their numbers during what should be routine encounters, and the cops who kill white people are at least sometimes arrested for it without the white people having to burn down all the businesses in their suburbs.

Some people are just using general statistics of interracial crime and comparing numbers like 'justice department stats say black people committed more crimes against white people in 201x therefore they aren't oppressed and/or their issues with police are their own fault'. That combined with arguments about white people being murdered by police not being 'recognised' as though PoC have some kind of responsibility to call out violence against white people by white police officers otherwise it means they don't really care about police violence and are just looking to start trouble. One guy tweeted a link at me which says 90% of interracial violence in 2018 was black on white, basically saying 'white people are the real victims' but the same article also seemed to end with the point that solving systemic issues (instead of just talking about them to win elections) will make violence and poverty go away - a point they're happy to ignore because they aren't interested in solving problems, just having arguments online. The same thing happens in cases of domestic abuse as well; when the media start discussing cases where a man abused or killed their female partner, certain men will start bringing up cases where women did the same to a male partner, but ONLY then. The men aren't sitting around having discussions about DV, just like the alt-right and police deps aren't thinking about violence against black communities until they are in the spotlight as major perpetrators then suddenly it's #bluelivesmatter.

It's almost like being labelled an "other" to the majority population, having huge chunks of how you socialize with the world defined by melanin content and cultural/historical circumstances way outside of your control, and witnessing firsthand how the community you've been placed in is mistreated... it's almost like it has a markedly different psychic effect on members of that community versus those who get to think about and be impacted by such matters electively. Almost like there's a privilege of sorts... to being in the majority... the majority defined as "white." Some kind of white.... privilege

I don't know about these specific cases, but back during the Trayvon Martin case there were a lot of people bringing up similar stories, where they left out the very minor detail that the murderers in those cases were immediately arrested and found guilty of murder. There was even one story that chose not to gloss over this, but instead was incensed that the murderer was not given the death penalty, and thought it was somehow equivalent. Not working. My brain slides off the topic entirely. I can't engage with it because I have no words to use.
