I never thought I would see the phrase “should my concierge be overpowered” in 2020. Also, I think your concierge would weigh the minuses of losing a job over their complete indifference to you as a human being and decide they were “overpowered” pretty quickly.

Fiyero has been played by black men, but most have been white. They changed a bunch of poo poo about that character and most of the story because the book was weird as gently caress and not family friendly. I still generally like the show, but not making an effort to cast Fiyero as black is a pretty lovely ongoing misstep.

Yeah, I guess it's way more important to cast black actors as explicitly black characters, for the usual reason. Wicked seemed fine to me when I saw it last year, I went at my Girlfriend's behest and I'm not super familiar with the show/book/fandom though.

I saw something similar, but it was Cosette, didn't really matter because she was an awesome talent and it was obvious why they made the choice.

This is a bit more of a recent thing in theatre, where the push for blind casting has mixed with less of a focus on total realism and more on talent on stage. They can also use this as an excuse to not put that much money into a realistic set and do more 'emersive' staging. It's really a bunch of buzzwords and chasing trends of whatever the director and producers last saw that was successful. Sorry, dumb derail. Doesn't matter much anyhow as the only American theatre that will survive Covid are Wicked and a few other Broadway productions. I picked a great dead medium as a career.

I don't know Wicked, but I can't imagine a production of Rent changing the race of any of the black characters, and they certainly aren't blacking up any white actors for a production of Othello anymore, no matter how great Lawrence Olivier was.
