The greater the number of options in consumer choice, the greater the opportunity cost to any selection we make.

this is why I can't find pleasure in my huge steam pile

Absolutely, OP. Navigating the current landscape of video games has become far too complicated and time consuming for the average layman. As a Certified Video Game Advisor, I will curate your Steam library, suggest new purchases, and keep you informed on what you should be playing and how often, leaving you more time to focus on the things in your life that matter most.

Every second I have a on a computer game I think what a loving waste of time.

Like literally catching a rare disease would be a more constructive use of my time because it would keep doctors and nurses working.

This, but also all of movies, music, sports, and art. Why ever stop working?

No one works in the game industry unlike hospitals. Games just pop out of the ground fully-formed, well, minus DLC.

if you're tired of all the games, the best answer is stop loving playing games for a while and do something else. when you come back later they'll be fun again and you'll definitely be a better person for doing something else

They're worse now because instead of the creation process being a developer thinking "how make good game?" it's a publisher thinking "how monetize game?"

It's not just you, I definitely do recognize it. Overabundance of choice has something to do with it but I have friends who still manage to enjoy themselves with the endless choice of games on steam. Even when I do manage to pick out a game and start it up, I usually just get tired of it within the first hour. Very rarely a game manages to capture my attention until the end (the last one was Disco Elysium) but it has to either offer something completely new or appeal to my nostalgia. I think I've just outgrown them but the fact that I've enjoyed it so much in the past makes it hard to let go.

video games are a weird in between media, some of them are very good, others are just fodder for brain cells

same with movies

if any idiot compares actually doing something, like a walk or a hike or a bike ride, to a video game or a movie they have lost the plot

its totally possible to watch lots of movies and play video games and still get out there too lol, this isnt a mutually exclusive deal here

there's an entire world of great indie games out there

most indie developers don't think about that financial poo poo so much that it bites them in the rear end when they've finished the game and are like "oh poo poo we have to do marketing too?"

That’s not how opportunity cost works.

Let’s say you have an option to be paid 5, 4, 3, 2, or 1 dollars for an hour of labor (thanks Obama) if you choose to make 5 dollars your opportunity cost us 4$. This is part of why negotiating theory tells you to identify your BATNA - it’s your best alternative. What you give up is the second best choice, not the cumulative value of every other choice. Unless you’re an immortal time traveler or something weird.

Always remember that the former President was dumber than the dumbest person you've ever met by a wide margin

I bought The Witcher 3 early on in to lockdown with the thought of "It's so much stuff! I'll never get bored of it!"

I got a few days enjoyment out of it for sure, but eventually felt overwhelmed with everything to do and gave up ever beating the thing. I never once touched the card game thing, I was just doing the main story and any side quests that seemed fun and naturally came up during my questing. By the end of my playthrough I found myself skipping through like half the dialogue and just going through the motions.

I've been replaying Super Metroid since then and enjoying it way more. I think maybe more modern story-heavy games just aren't a huge draw for me. Breath of the Wild had a shitload of stuff to do, and I gladly did everything in that game outside of collecting all the Korok seeds.

Find a game that's been running forever with no signs of shutting down and stick with it as you grow older and then you no longer have to worry about other games.

Friend of mine been going through that phase where he feels too old to try anything new so he actually started an account to play WoW vanilla for the first time just for the safety of knowing it's not gonna change. It's so weird seeing someone live-commenting on his fresh brand new experiences going through that game.

They should stop making videogames for a decade so everyone can catch up on all the games they already made.

Otherwise they'll end up in a situation like "books" where there are just too many to possibly sort through and nobody bothers anymore

Eh, I'm not ashamed of who I am or what I like. I don't have as much interest in trying new things as much as I did before, and I know that's probably gonna get bigger with time. I'd rather not burn myself forcing myself to do things I don't want or care. Everyone has that tendency, it has nothing to do with any generation in particular.

I'll never be the type of person to complain about how the new is worse than the old gratuitously (or the opposite for that matter). Heck I actually like modern current music a lot more than the stuff in the 90's/00s.

The only thing that I never seen to get exhausted from is watching new fashion trends. I don't think I ever will. It's just so much fun.
