I've been going back through the archive. 1. I listened to the whole L. Ron Hubbard saga and I think that the song at the end of the last part about his death is probably one of the finest comedic moments this podcast will ever have, it's just so loving perfect. 2. lol at the guest during the Bin Laden episode who immediately knew what Bible Black was. 3. Robert, have you ever heard from advertisers about your lead-ins to the ads? I love them but I just imagine some Geico marketing dude listening and hearing "...but you know who won't molest hundreds of children?" before their ad and sending out a frantic email to the lovely people at I Heart Podcasts Co

A lot of the time podcast ads are inserted automatically by an ad network the podcasters partner with with no input from the latter which occasionally leads to stuff like this. Of course misguided ad attempts even without algorithms: the host of Swindled, a podcast that's as anti-comsumerist, anti-corruption and anti-captialist as they come, was personally contacted with an ad proposal from the Mike Bloomberg campaign of all people (whose ads ALSO appeared on BtB) AceOfFlames fucked around with this message at 07:00 on May 7, 2020 |

Yep, I remember the Bloomberg ads, though hell, I got them online on an English speaking website for Swedish news. They were relentless the week before he dropped out.

I use Podbay to download a lot of my podcasts (including all the iHeart podcasts I listen to), and the only ads I ever get are ads for other iHeart podcasts. I think the Bloomberg ads have been the only non-iHeart ads I've ever gotten, or at the very least within recent memory.

I was about to absolutely tear into the Jim Bakker episode on Tuesday when it occurred to me that this would be the perfect time to get my wife into this podcast. We both grew up in Fort Mill, SC, home of the Bakker's Heritage USA I don't know many details of The Legend of Jim and Tammy Fae Bakker though so this should be a real treat. Though I do have fond memories of going to the Bakker's water park as a kid in the 90's, but I remember thinking it was weird that 2-piece bathing suits were prohibited. Now Heritage is a true Defunctland success story* and there's rumors about homeless people falling down the elevator shafts of some of the giant abandoned hotels there. https://www.charlotteobserver.com/living/religion/article205362719.html *okay so it hasn't been covered by Defunctland but it totally should/could.

I haven't listened to the episodes yet but I do love that Bakker and Lyndon LaRouche were prison cellmates. Though I'm willing to bet that the conversations were mostly LaRouche ranting with Bakker as a captive audience.

Suggestion for a new slogan for BtB: Behind the Bastards: Come for the cult leaders and fascist dictators, stay for the fake doctors! Seriously, so many fake doctors. And ironically, one of the few real doctors had to put aside his doctorly training to become a dictator and massacre thousands of his own citizens.

DC Murderverse posted:he does not appear to have committed a massacre, he was stuck on the "murder political enemies" and "establish diplomatic relationships with apartheid states" of terrible leadership. With that at least I am willing to give him some small leeway, considering that Malawi/Nyasaland was (and remains) very poor, with a large population, and a huge portion of its economy was the remittances sent by migrant laborers working in the Rhodesias and South Africa. The first African trade union in South Africa was started by a Nyasa migrant worker, and the first president of Zambia was the son of a Nyasa migrant. And the South African Detente was at least part of the reason why South Africa cut off support for Rhodesia in the last few years of the latter's existence. But even with that nuance, it's not a great position to take, for obvious reasons. There's a reason why Banda was arguably the most important nationalist leader in Central Africa in the period of the Federation, and then immediately bombed that reputation by recognizing South Africa.

The name of George Floyd is murmured and whispered in the same breath as Emmet Till, and the videos of the protests are insane. They literally cut open the gate to the precinct parking lot and start smashing squad cars. The police say they don’t have the resources or manpower to arrest anyone so they tagging people with green ink and bailing. that grossman episode was great. i remember him from the jack thompson "video games cause murder" poo poo and i assumed he was some weird moral majority weirdo who had weird pacifist views. NOPE. hell grossman sounds like a loving baddie from a video game. also i think he hates them because in his broken mind, he sees them are "competition" to his grift. like i never knew how loving psychotic that dude was. also a fun non horror lowkey behind the bastards would be jack thompson. the moral crusader because he was werid rear end in a top hat who got disbarred for really hosed up behavior and sending hardcore porn to judges and making fun of a lawyer who died saving his son.
