Its all about The U for me. Not particularly informative or groundbreaking but extremely fun.

A guy I know (who's also in sports journalism) did a 30 for 30 tournament to determine the best according to his Twitter followers. Two Escobars beat out The U in the final.

Other than the big blow out series it seems like The U has been the most influential doc on their house style. Most of them now are just fairly straightforward and highlight heavy sports docs about cool teams from 20-30 years ago that people are nostalgic for rather than telling more esoteric or granular stories. The U transcended it to some degree I think because it had a really talented filmmaker and that was a uniquely cool team but it seems to be the model they're going for now.

Yeah this is probably zeroing in on why The U transcended thing a bit more than normal. Because the film maker is talented, he was passionate about the topic, and it reveled in the fun. And even though it was pretty straightforward it subverted the traditional because it was enjoying talking about bounties and how lame Notre dame is.

I think this is probably the best use of the hour long standard format because it's a topic that you don't need more depth on to really understand (and enjoy and laugh at Cheryl just dunking all over Reggie). The Bo Jackson one is sort of the same for me: not the most insightful doc, but it's made with a lot of passion and love that really helps overcome the format limitations.

I think Whitlock has a scattered audience but not like any of those guys.

El Gallinero Gros posted:I was more referring to The Ringer and Grantland getting major backing Grantland got backing because Simmons got them to let him be EIC of a prestige writing site that may not do the traffic numbers, but it'll get people talking. Prestige content as a loss leader, effectively. it worked, until ESPN decided they wanted to cut costs and get out of that sort of game. Simmons spun the success of Grantland as an editorial outlet into getting HBO and others to invest in him doing it without ESPN, and with blackjack and hookers. He brought his podcast there from ESPN, they've ridden the wave of a shotgun blast of podcasting, and well here we are. Let's look at Whitlock. While Simmons launched and ran and maintained Grantland until ESPN decided they wanted to cut losses, Whitlock tried to get a site off the ground at ESPN - The Undefeated - and was replaced as EIC before it even launched. I'm not sure they're in comparable places.
