I feel like the dialogue and the fact there was a (terrible) plot is what made Dominic Deegan 'better' (IE more fun to mock) than this.
Like, really, the big charm of Ed Wood and what I feel by and large sets his films (besides Plan Nine which really is some next level poo poo) apart from other schlock of the period is how clumsy and bizarre his dialogue was. Like Bride of the Monster and Plan Nine feel like they were written by aliens who only sort of understood Human social interactions.

Every line and every 'plot' development in Dominic Deegan was stupid and/or offensive. There was always something entertaining going on, by and large, with only a few of the more wretched arcs being genuinely dull. So far, with a few shining exceptions, this nonsense has all just been dull. The biggest reason is probably the fact nothing resembling a plot has yet emerged, but I also feel like even without one, it still could have been entertainingly awful if we just had dialogue.

The strip was always bad but everything involving Mongreltown has made it worse. They've eliminated all stakes, all conflict, the search for the meaning of the disappearance of Dominic Deegan and the End of Prophecy is now some weird images in a book they found at a porno shop. That's it. That's what's happening. That's ALL that is happening.

It's known he makes things up as he goes along and whatnot, but I wonder if that's true also of the basic premise of this comic. Like does Mookie know, or even at the very least have a handful of potential ideas he can be ultimately build towards - what actually happened to Dominic Deegan? Or are we getting the ever successful and always satisfying Lost/Battlestar Galactica/JJ Abrams style story where you have a central mystery that the writers haven't an inkling the answer to.

We're nearly a year in and there's no stakes. The closest thing we have to an antagonist is the combined idiocy of Snout, Arudak, and [Name Unknown] who, for no reason apparent to the reader, all value Snout's opinions even though he's Jar Jar Binks.

Improvisation isn't necessarily a bad thing, but Mookie doesn't know how to keep a story moving along. The old rule of when the action slows down, two guys show up with guns may be a cheap tactic, but it's something.

Yeah, that's a pickle isn't it. I think we're suppose to be wondering which of these two Snout can trust, Ink Witch or Arudak. But um. I don't know what they disagree with, because it's a nebulous thing that involves "Deegan". Which frankly as you said is not enough to carry a story.

It’s impossible to really detect a pattern here, because we’ve only just now gotten to the very, very beginning of the story:

-Two competing witches are seeking a “dream realm”, written about in a book.
-Because her magic isn’t working properly, the first witch recruits a local idiot to be her sidekick.
-The idiot convinces the witches to work together.

That’s the entire plot, so far.

But, narratively, it’s obviously completely unintelligible. Like, we now know that there is no underlying mystery as to why the witch was all beat up at the start. That was just meant to be her powers glitching. In fact, it turns out, everything the witch has done has been completely random for this reason. Blowing up Snout’s house was a glitch, crash landing in the field was a glitch, etc.. Her only purposeful actions have been to ask Snout to find her book, and then to follow him to this town.

Of course, this means that all the stuff about tracking down the ship was a bunch of bullshit filler. Like, moreso than we suspected at the time. If Snout has just found her holding the “dream realm” book at the very start, nothing would have been lost aside from some very meagre characterization. (Snout’s adequate at sewing!)

There's also no convincing personal reason for Snout to care about any of this. There's no personal stake in the legacy or the dream realms or whatever. He just saw a scrap of paper with Dominic's name on it, and became fixated on it for no other reason than because Dom is important to Mookie he must be important to everyone else.

Probably the biggest issue with Terracianno’s storytelling is the extreme redundancy. It’s not just that things are overexplained, but that we’re given multiple conflicting explanations.

I noted this long ago, but the only reason the witch shows up at Snout’s door all bloodied, and then gets abducted, is so that she can serve as a typical femme fatale character. It’s to make Snout intrigued by her and drawn into this dangerous mystery while she (probably) manipulates him.

But, at the same time, we’re shown that Snout would gladly risk his life to find the “dream realm” by himself, because of his curious need to exhaustively research the history and origins of his local library. The witch ends up not being in any danger at all - and, when she suddenly reappears, they spend days together barely communicating. Their interactions are totally asexual in a way that’s only highlighted by the nudity: they don’t mind being nude together because there’s zero attraction. She’s more motherly than anything at this point, giving Snout some spending money to go buy candy or whatever.

Another example of redundancy is when the characters have to piece together a bunch of clues in order to find... a mass-market paperback containing information that both witches are already familiar with. So the two witches actually knew all along what they were looking for: the ability to predict the future.

And Snout is, presumably, going along with them because the rich philanthropist might have left behind some other treasure?

Oh, I agree. But I do feel that in general, and definitely when your story is predicated upon some manner of mystery/question, that the author should have at least some inkling of where the story is going. Like it doesn't have to be a definitive answer, but at the very least I feel like if Mookie were even a semi-competent writer he should either know what happened to Dominic or have a handful of potential fates to pick from. Like there's definitely a middle ground between chaos reigns and Babylon 5.

Does Arudak have chronic pain from an injury? Is that why he walks with a cane and hunched over and wears a cloak? Does he have scars or wounds from his fight with inkwich or others of her order?

Did Snout instead hurt his back just now with his mental handicap strength? Is that a power Snout has demonstrated before? (no)

Was this whole scene taking place right next to the apothecary who was standing just out of frame? Did Snout teleport them there? Did they run back between panels 3 and 4? Why isn't the apothecary angry with Snout for stealing one of her potions and running off without paying? This happened like 30 seconds ago. Is she blind because she has an old bra on her head?

No points for guessing that the label will peel off and underneath it'll be a label for the diarrhea one.

There is a difference between improvisation and not knowing what your payoff is when you're doing paint-by-the-numbers payoff-based writing. When you're writing a whodunit potboiler, it's important that the writer know the criminal's identity at the beginning so they can properly leave clues and have the bad guy behave in a fashion that makes logical sense and upon a second reading will still be a reasonable way for them to act.

When you begin with a main plot that is reliant on you having a point in mind like this, like the writers of "Lost" or "Heroes" but don't bother to figure it out before you muddle on forwards, it creates a number of obvious problems. That's what mookie's doing.

Dominic is very clearly still alive and jacking off in the swamps of Dagobah surrounded by hordes of identical descendants spawned from Luna's enchanted dragon ball eggs who interbred with his grad students. He will also have grown a long, smelly beard so he can tutor Snout in the art of being a seer even though he lost his second sight at the end of the original comic. No one will question this and Dominic will give no explanation. There is no loving way mookie would kill off his self insert, even if it requires him inexplicably living for more than 200 years.
