Now, I don't think I've ever posted in this forum, so I'm ready to be torn to shreds over my terrible mainstream music opinions, so don't hold back. Probably simply an artifact of the lack of competition in the 21st century American rock scene. Who would you say is the best English language Rock Band to put out a new album since 1981? Now, you can name a pre-1981 band as your answer if they published a new album after that date. If you find the Rolling Stones "Tattoo You" album of 1981 is so incredible that it eclipses the work of every post 1981 band, go ahead and name them.

I guess it depends on how you want to define "best". If you go by charts you're essentially trying to democratize the process, but this is problematic (e.g. listeners don't exactly have a say in what they hear on the radio...it's more complicated than that and there's often a LOT of money involved, so it's not really as democratic as it seems). If you go by critical opinions you will probably not be hearing anything about "Shinedown" (who the gently caress?) or Nickelback, despite these bands (probably) topping charts left and right. But by deferring to experts you're putting a lot of faith in a field that has a low barrier to entry and very little intellectual rigor (this is a good thing). Lastly, you can interpret "best" as "my personal favorite" and then answer it in whatever way makes you happy. It's Sleater-Kinney, hands down BTW.

Well if the year 1981 is included then the answer is Siouxsie and the Banshees since Juju came out in June '81 and that's the best album ever.

There's an even lower barrier to entry there and no intellectual rigor.

Actually, the way the thread title was phrased made me realize: the title of the thread is asking people would consider the best band, starting in 1981. This doesn't mean rock bands formed on or after 1981, just what people since 1981 have considered the best rock band. So my answer is the Beatles. e: Anthologies 1, 2, and 3 contain previously unreleased material, so they should count as new albums. Especially 1 & 2 for featuring new songs. The criteria's a little weird because you could absolutely say Led Zeppelin since Coda came out in '82, but no reasonable person would consider them a modern or post-'81 rock band.

R.E.M. They formed in 1980, but their first single, Radio Free Europe, was released in '81, first EP, Chronic Town, in '82, and first LP, Murmur, in '83. Rolling Stone magazine named Murmur the best album of 1983, beating Michael Jackson's Thriller, The Police's Synchronicity, and U2's War.

Murmur was always one of my least favorites. They were my favorite band at a certain extremely 90s high school point in my life and Michael Stipe is at least half the reason I'm queer, but I really only listened to Fables, LRP, And especially Document. Document fuckin whips rear end. I still listen to it a lot. Green had a few of their best and worst songs, Out of time was even more wildly inconsistent, automatic was great, monster was VERY great, new adventures in hi fi is probably my second favorite to Document. Everything after that is pretty bad tho

U2 had far too many outright bad albums and their absolute best, Zooropa, is considered a footnote even by fans of the band Which is honestly nuts because it's brilliant. Edit: also, wow I'm dumb because just now, after 27 years, I'm realizing that Zooropa is a play on Europa
