Not just that but the Nicholas Brothers wouldn't choreograph their routines either. They would just improvise in the moment and take their cues off each other to stay in sync. They wanted them in a separate scene because they knew they'd have to cut them in order for the film to play in certain theaters, mainly in the south. Black and white actors appeared in scenes together quite often and it was cool as long as the blacks were servants.
