I am always impressed by music that was written by a talented singer. Once upon a time there were many of these famous singer-songwriters. It seems nowadays they aren't as famous like they were back then.
A few of my favorite examples...
Jackson Browne

James Taylor

Joni Mitchell

So what singer-songwriters do you like?

Kelsey Waters isn't famous, but she probably should be because this song kicks rear end:

'Cuz you want what you want, even if it don't want you back

Also, Jade Bird (her legal name, lol). Her voice can be hella powerful when she wants it be (check the choruses in Uh Huh), and overall she reminds me of the best of classic rock:

And of course, there's the great Tom Waits, and he is Mad:

Well i think I'm learning that there are plenty of good singer-songwriters now too I was just too lazy to look for them! Or I guess they just aren't described with that terminology anymore. Cool stuff guys

I am an ESL professor and one of my colleagues once had a "learn English through song" class and one of the songs he had students listen to and copy the lyrics for was the Sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald and to this day I consider it the dumbest thing I have ever seen one of my colleagues do

its more just that gordon lightfoot is impossible to understand when he sings

I am a native English speaker and the whole song is gibberish

His annunciation sounds like bob dylan singing into a tin can from the next room

They say, "you mean it's just sounds?" thinking that for something to just be a sound is to be useless, whereas I love sounds just as they are, and I have no need for them to be anything more than what they are.
OP, you might find that Leonard Cohen does it for you if you substitute "has a pleasing voice and manner of delivery" for "talent singer". The man was primarily a poet and novelist before he became a musician (he was 33 when he released his first album!), and as such, the beauty is mostly concentrated in the lyrics. Try either Songs of Leonard Cohen (1967) or Songs of Love and Hate (1969) as a starting place.
